INTRODUCTION
Background of Report
Industrial attachment has been established as a requisite in Institute of Professional Studies (IPS)

for the award of a Bachelor Degree. Students having completed the third year of their

programme are by this policy, expected to undertake an internship programme with any business

organization of their choice. The reporter had the internship at Entsil Mining Services Ltd.

The internship program is expected to last for a period of at least two months. During the period,

students are enlightened on what is actually done at the workplace in relation to the classroom

theories. This is as a result of the gap that has existed between the theories learnt in the

classroom and what is practically done at the workplace.

At the end of the programme, each student is required to produce a written report that

encapsulates detailed information on the activities undertaken during the period. The programme

is expected to give students some experience in their field of study and knowledge as to what

pertains at the workplace. In other words, it is to assess the impact of the programme on students.

minimum of two months stay in the organization, expected to report back to the school. The

Purpose of Attachment/ Expected Output

It has been realized by employers of various organizations that graduates from various tertiary

institutions do not perform effectively and efficiently as they should when employed. This

problem can be traced down to our educational system, which is book based with little or no

practical aspect of the program of study. It is in this vein that IPS instituted an internship

programme, to prepare students to serve the needs of industry and commerce.

The purpose of the internship programme is also to enable students, to familiarize themselves

with the practical aspect of the various programmes undertaken. For these reasons, the intern has

the following expectations outlined during the internship period:

 To apply the classroom lessons in the organization and to gain practical experience as an

administrator.

 To have a better understanding of the role of an administrator and to be guided by the

superior in certain tasks that are quite cumbersome in nature.

 To have a broad knowledge of how resources are managed at Entsil Mining Services Ltd

in pursuit of its goals.

 To have a clear and better understanding of the organizational chart, how communication

flows at the company and how to be a good team player.

Duties and Schedules
The intern upon arrival at the company was assigned to the Purchasing and Supply, a department

in the company. The intern’s direct supervisor during the internship was the head of the

department, and worked from 8:30am to 5:00pm every Monday to Friday.

The intern was on the first day introduced to the various departments and staffs. Orientations

were given from the second day to the end of the first week on the work and role of the

purchasing team. The duties and schedules of the intern for the two months in the company

included the following:

 Recording and Keeping files

The intern was assigned the responsibility of taking the particulars of orders made by the

company in which Entsil Mining Services has contracts for the supply of equipment and any

other services they needed to be done for them.

These details compiled by the intern was to be submitted to the head of the department after

every their day to day rounds. The head of the department to go through and to append his

signature on them. The details were then sent to the headquarters in Accra-dome for it to be

process and then later sent to the USA for the purchase to me made.
 Assistant to the Marketing team.

The intern during sometimes was assigned to join the marketing team since she has a background

of marketing to assist them in their day to day activities. The marketing team are responsible in

the advertising the products and services of the company to various mining companies and other

contractors,

Contribution of Student to Organization

The intern realized that, the company was not selling fast. That is, it was not getting more

contracts for the past six months. The intern, having knowledge in marketing, contacted

management to rebrand the company.

The intern brought about that workers attitude towards working place was to be improved by

giving the workers other motivation as in salaries and other workshop programs should be given

to them. This idea by the intern brought about massive changes in the attitude of the workers.

Application of Theories to Real life Situation

One of the theories learnt in the classroom, which was practiced at Entsil Mining Services is

leadership styles in organizations. The kind of leadership style practiced is democratic. Decisions

taken by management were explained to all the employees involved. In other instance, decision

making was shared between these two parties. Criticisms and praises were given objectively.

This leadership style brought about the feeling of responsibility within employees, successes in

their work, innovation and creativity. Employees felt comfortable to make suggestions which

were given the necessary recognitions. It was this type of leadership style that made it possible
for the intern to make suggestions which was implemented and brought a positive change to the

school.

There was also the theory of everybody’s involvement, where all employees and management

worked together to achieve the objectives of the company. Employees did not allow their

personal interest to override them but worked in the best interest of the company. In effect, they

worked as a system.

LESSONS LEARNT

During the internship period, the intern learnt some lessons that will shape and make working

after school in firms easier. This programme gave the intern the opportunity to work as a team

and thereby acquiring a team spirit. Good working relationships that should exist among workers

at the workplace, communication and how to relate with the different levels of management were

also learnt.

Moreover, the organizational culture that bound all workers was not left out. There was a culture

of honesty, dedication and exercise of due diligence. Aside these, the rules and regulations thus

the code of conduct of all the employees were studied which is believed to correct any defect and

make the intern acceptable in any organization.

CHALLENGES

One of the major problems, students going on an internship program encounter is getting an

organization to have the attachment. This is especially with those who are not known by anybody

in high authority and the intern was no exception to this problem.

Proximity of the company to the residence of the intern was another problem. The intern lived

far away from the company and this meant that waking up very early in order to avoid being in

traffic. There was also transportation cost on a daily basis. Since the company was under no

obligation to reward the intern for work done, all the transportation and feeding cost were borne

by the intern. This was a challenge as the money was not readily available.

CONCLUSION

Despite the challenges, the internship programme has been a success, enjoying and a source of

encouragement for students to enter the job market. This internship programme has made the

intern receive the practical aspect of the theories learnt. It has also prepared the mind, given

experience and exposure to what pertains on the job market.

In effect, the internship programme which was designed to give training to students and shape

them for the job market is on course and should be taken more seriously, as one does not remain

the same after having the practical feel of lessons in class.

RECOMMENDATIONS

 Most of the work is down manual which reduces the efficiency and effectiveness of the

organization, so I recommend that Computers should be used to improve upon the quality

and quantity of work done.

 Also Students should be rotated into other section to have a board understanding about

the program.

 Furthermore, accommodation should be given to students especially those who are not

familiar with the environment to make their stay enjoyable.
