Subject/Grade Level: Science/ 2nd grade

Time/Duration: 45 mins

Objectives

The Objectives is to provide a clear understanding and learn about what a plant needs to grow.

Standards/TEKS

(9) Organisms and environments. The student knows that living organisms have basic needs
that must be met for them to survive within their environment. The student is expected to:

(A) Identify the basic needs of plants and animals;

(B) Identify factors in the environment, including temperature and precipitation, that affect
growth and behavior such as migration, hibernation, and dormancy of living things; and
(C) Compare the ways living organisms depend on each other and their environments such
as through food chains.

Anticipatory Set

What do you know about plants? Where do they usually grow?

Teaching: Input/Mini Lesson

● There are so many different types of plants and so many different facts that we know
about them.
● Some plants have flowers and those flowers have seeds.
● Other plants grow seeds without flowers.
● All plants absorb water through their roots. Roots grow under the ground. Some
plants even live in the water and their roots float.
● All plants have leaves. Most plants have green leaves, but leaves can be different
colors.
● Plants have stems. Plants that are trees have a very big stem called a trunk.
● There are plants all around us. We eat food from plants. Fruits and vegetables grow
on plants.
● Plants need several things so that they can grow. What do you think they need?

Teaching: Modeling

Create your own artistic plant model or flower model. Draw and present on a white board or
marker board as you go.

Teaching: Checking for Understanding

Supply paper and ask the students to write down or draw the important needs that a plant needs
to grow. Ask the class who would like to share what they wrote.

Questioning strategies:

1. How much water do you think a plant needs?

2. Where are some places you can grow plants?
3. Where are plants usually found?
4. How tall do you think a plant can get?
5. Can light from a light bulb help grow a plant?

Guided Practice

Have the students do coloring activities. Have the students do the printable worksheet.( Go over
it with them.)

Closure

Not only have you learned a great ordeal about what plants need to grow but you also had a
recap of the plant life cycle. All these things are essential for a plant to survive in its own
environment. Not only that but providing us with the air that we need to breathe. Ask if anyone
has any questions.
Independent Practice

Have the students go home and put their knowledge of what they learned to use. Give them an
option to ask their parents to help them grow and take care of a plant of their own.
