Argumentative Essay
Let your parents read the essay aloud while you listen, and apply the techniques in
listening.
As online learning becomes more common and more resources and more
resources are converted into digital form, some people have suggested that
public libraries should be shut down in their place and everyone should be given
an iPad with an e-reader subscription. Proponents of this idea state that it will
save local cities and town’s money because libraries are expensive to maintain.
They also believe it will encourage more people to read because they have to
travel to a library to get a book; they can simply click on what they want to read
and read it from wherever they are. They could also access more materials
because libraries won’t have to buy physical copies of books; they can simply
rent out as many digital copies as they need.
However, it would be a serious mistake to replace libraries with tablets.
First, digital books and resources are associated with less learning and more
problems than print resources. A study done on tablet vs book reading found
that people read 20-30% slower on tablets, retain 20% less information and
understand 10% less of what they read compared to people who read the same
information on print. Additionally, staring too long at a screen has shown to
cause numerous health problems including blurred vision, dizziness, dry eyes,
headaches and eye strain, at much higher instances than reading print does.
People who use tablets and mobile devices excessively also have incidents of
more serious health issues such as fibromyalgia, shoulder and back pain,
carpal tunnel syndrome, and muscle strain. I know from whatever I read from
my e-reader for too long, my eyes begin to feel tired and my neck hurts. We
should not add to these problems by giving people, especially young people
more reasons to look at screens. Second, it is incredibly narrow-minded that
the only service library offers is book lending. Libraries have a multitude of
benefits, and many are only available if the library has physical location. Some
of these benefits include acting as a quiet study space, giving people a way to
converse with their neighbors, holding classes on a variety of topics, providing
jobs, answering patron questions and keeping the community connected.
One neighborhood found that, after a local library instituted community
events such as play time for toddlers and parents, job fairs for teenagers and
meeting spaces for senior citizens, over a third percent of residents reported to
have felt more connected to the community. Similarly, a Pew survey conducted
in 2015 found that nearly two-thirds of American adults feel that closing their
local library would have a major impact on their community. People see libraries
a way to connect with others and get their questions answered.
5
.
While replacing libraries may seem like a simple solution, it would
encourage people to spend even more time looking at digital screens despite
the myriad issues surrounding them.

V. EVALUATION
I. Directions: Read the description of each text and identify the main
purpose of the author. HPS: 20 points
1. The story of a young man who learns to resist the influence of drugs and gangs.
2. A child’s letter to Santa asking for a bicycle because the child has been
good all the year
10
3. The lyrics to a song written by a popular music group, Mindful Behavior
6. The group turned down yet another hall that opened into a jungle-like area
with flowers and small trees, and sunshine that filtered through skylights and
floor-to-ceiling windows
8. I don’t think that students should be paid for good grades. It is also not fair
for the children who work hard but don’t always get good grades on tests.
10. In naval aviation, the Airborne Early Warning Command and Control
System plane, of Hawkeye, serves as an air traffic, monitoring the airspace
around a carrier fleet. It is responsible for surveillance of enemy aircraft and
ships as well as directing helicopters for survivors and guarding against air
collisions. In addition to servicing the navy, Hawkeye planes have been
used in rescue operations of civilians during hurricane evacuations.
11
11. Alonzo winked at his mother’s shocked gaze and with a grip quipped,
“Sausage and pepperoni pizza for breakfast makes perfect sense. Allow me
to demonstrate. You have your tomato. Tomato is technically a fruit. You
have your cheese. Cheese is a daity product. You have your crust -
necessary carbs for quick energy in the morning, and don’t forget the
sausage and pepperoni - my protien. If you think about it, it’s just like bacon
and eggs, toast and orange juice.” Still grinnning, he added, “Really it is.
Well, almost! Why are you looking at me that way?”
13. Circadian rhythms have fascinated scientists for many years. Recognizing
that the eye nerves translate information to the brain about the time of the
day, scientists observe that we adapt to the conditions around us. Also,
these researchers have recently discovered that not everyone is alike. For
example, teenagers are nocturnal. That is, they are more active at night but
do not function as well early in the morning.
14. Game night at our house was hilarious when we played Cranium with two
teams of three. Imagine Abram, the savvy surfer, doing an impression of
Marilyn Monroe singing “Happy Birthday,” or Dave the macho builder,
swinging his hips and singing a medley of Madonna’s songs, but the most
memorable was George’s Cranium Doodle hint for architectural term “Flying
buttress.” It was well side-splittingly outrageous!
12
II. Read each selection and answer the questions that follow.
A.
Ripples of Energy
A wave is any movement that carries energy. Some waves carry energy
through water. Others carry energy through gases, like air, or solid materials. If you
drop a rock into a pool of water, a wave, or ripple of energy, skims across the pool's
surface. In the same way, an underwater earthquake can release energy into ocean
water. Then it carries a giant wave, or tsunami, across the surface until it hits land.
If you hear a clap of thunder, sound waves (or vibrations) have carried the crashing
“BOOM” to your ears. Sound waves speed through the air at about 1,100 feet (335
meters) per second. Light also travels through the air in waves. They travel at more
than 186,000 miles (300 million meters) per second. So the light waves from a flash
of lightning reach your eyes before that clap of thunder reaches your ears! Electrons
travel in waves, too. They move back and forth in a solid wire, sending waves of
electricity, so you can turn on a light during the storm!
15. What is the author's most important purpose for writing the selection?
16. Which question could best help someone figure out this author’s purpose?
17. Which might also have been an author’s purpose for this selection?
B.
People who Need People
Everyone needs help sometime. Humans depend on one another. That's why,
communities everywhere have special people to lend a helping hand to anyone who
needs it. For example, what would our citizens do without a community fire
13
department? If a home catches on fire, as the Jackson place did last week, it might
be destroyed and the inhabitants got hurt … or worse. We're so fortunate to have
trained firefighters to come to the rescue and put out the fire safely. If the fire
department hadn't come so quickly, the Jacksons might have lost everything. What
about our local police who protect our families, our homes, and our belongings? The
police have helped so many families this past year, especially rescuing people and
pets and protecting our property after the flood.
Think about all the other service workers we have in this community. We have
sanitation workers who collect trash and keep our community clean. We have road
workers who put up and repair traffic signs and fix potholes in the streets to protect
not just us, but the tires on our cars, and where would this community be without the
teachers in our school and the doctors, nurses, and technicians in our community
clinics? We benefit so much from all these tireless workers who keep our community
running, but these services are expensive.
As citizens, we pay taxes, it's true, and some of the taxes go toward buying
the services we need, but today, there's just not enough money. Times are hard and
the economy has slowed. Plants are closing and people are losing their jobs and
homes, but citizens still need services! Many service workers are thinking of leaving
and going to other communities where they'll be paid a better wage, one that allows
them to support their families. They can't afford to live here anymore … and we can't
afford to let them leave. We need these people in the community. So, join with us
today as we petition for changes to our tax system that will allow our community to
keep more of the tax dollars to invest in service workers who live right here in the
community. Please sign our petition now, and be sure to vote for Proposition 6X1 on
Election Day!
18. What is the author’s most important purpose for writing the selection?
19. Which question could best help someone figure out this author’s purpose?
14
20. If the last paragraph had NOT been written, what do you think the author’s
purpose would have been?
