One important skill all students should develop is the ability to explain. In almost all your subjects, you
will be asked to explain words, operations, or processes so it is very important to know and distinguish
among the types of texts. In the activity above, you researched for information, interviewed a person, and
organized the facts. These are all necessary steps for you to write a meaningful text.
There are four basic text types: expository, descriptive, persuasive, and narrative.
1.Expository- An expository paragraph or article is called an exposition. Its purpose is to explain
something or to provide information or instructions to your reader.

When writing an exposition, you should see to it that the details are presented in a systematic way or
orderly manner so that the reader can follow the explanation clearly from beginning to end. When
explaining a process, for instance, you can make the time order clear by using connectors such as first,
second, next, at the same time, etc. In most expository writing, the topic is stated in the first paragraph.
The next paragraphs develop this topic by giving specific details or information about it. 2. Descriptive-
In our ordinary conversations with people, questions often crop up. “So you have seen Lee Min Ho in
person. How did he look? What was his hair like? What was he wearing?”To answer such questions, we
need to describe.

We describe to make our listeners or readers see, hear, taste, smell, or feel what we, ourselves, experience
by means of our own senses. When we describe, we report through words what our senses have told us. In
other words, we note the details of what we have observed by the use of our senses. (Source:

3. Persuasive- is a kind of composition that uses logic or sound reasoning to convince the reader that an
idea is better than another; it attempts to convince readers to take action or adopt a point of view. Also
known as the argument essay, it is one of the most commonly written types of composition. The writer of
a persuasive essay provides evidence to prove a point by giving examples, stating facts, reasoning
logically, or quoting experts.

4. Narrative-aims to tell a story or share an experience by focusing on the different events surrounding
the experience. It includes both fiction (novels, short stories, poems) and nonfiction (memoirs,
biographies, news stories.

Activity
A. Read and understand each paragraph. Identify the type of text. (2 pts. each)

_______________1. Thailand is known for its agricultural industry because of its vast land. For this
reason, many Thais engage themselves in agribusiness, specifically, farming. The highly respect the role
buffaloes play in the fields. Without the buffaloes, the farmers will not be able to till the land and plant
rice. They feel indebted towards the buffaloes. To express gratitude towards the buffaloes, Thai farmers
perform a rite called Hong Khwan Khwai or Ao Khwan Khwai. In English, this means the rite of
comforting the buffalo.

_______________2. It is reasonable, according to fact and historic usage, to include under the word
“Negro” the darker peoples of Africa characterized by a brown skin, curled or “frizzled” hair, full and
sometimes everted lips, a tendency to a development of the maxillary parts of the face, and a
dolichocephalic head. This type is not fixed or definite. The color varies widely; it is never black or
bluish, as some say, and it becomes often light brown or yellow. The hair varies from curly to a wool-like
mass, and the facial angle and cranial form show wide variation.

______________3. It seems everything is moving online these days. Even our education is transferring
onto the internet. Many people might squabble about the disadvantages of this phenomena, but today, I
want to discuss the advantages of getting an education online. This is a pertinent topic, as the future of
education is moving more and more towards shifting physical educational institutions online. There are
reasons for this: many times you can learn whatever you want, it is more comfortable in a variety of ways,
online courses often look good on resumes, the pacing of learning is managed by the learner, and the cost
of virtual education is often lower than traditional education.
_______________4. I was 27 when I went to Taiwan for the second time, my first visit since I was a
baby. It was 2013. Gong had returned there and died a few years earlier, and my mother and I had gone to
visit his remains. He had died alone, his memories wasted. It felt, to us, an irrevocable betrayal, though
we'd had no say in what had happened and we couldn't have changed it. Decades had passed since my
mother had emigrated. But the island had called my family back. My mother began to talk about returning
for good when she retired. I saw the ways she had tried on a different life on a different continent, and
how it bristled speaking a language she'd inherited, asking her children questions in Mandarin and
receiving replies in English. We mocked her errors, as children do, and she would reply, "Well, you speak
Chinese, then," jokingly, though I sensed a loss in her tone. I saw in Taiwan something of the ways that
places draw us in — and sometimes push us away again — and there grew in me an inarticulate longing.

_______________________5. A good memory is a great advantage whether in school, at home, or at

work. Students who can retain lectures and readings in their minds have an edge over those who forget
easily. Housewives with good memory can reduce their workload to a great extent because they know
exactly where tools, utensils, and other things are stored when they need them. People doing business
must have a retentive memory especially for names, dates, and the details of a transaction to be able to
chalk up more business.

As online learning becomes more common and more and more resources are converted to digital form,
some people have suggested that public libraries should be shut down and, in their place, everyone
should be given an iPad with an e-reader subscription.

Proponents of this idea state that it will save local cities and towns money because libraries are
expensive to maintain. They also believe it will encourage more people to read because they won’t have
to travel to a library to get a book; they can simply click on what they want to read and read it from
wherever they are. They could also access more materials because libraries won’t have to buy physical
copies of books; they can simply rent out as many digital copies as they need.

However, it would be a serious mistake to replace libraries with tablets. First, digital books and
resources are associated with less learning and more problems than print resources. A study done on
tablet vs book reading found that people read 20-30% slower on tablets, retain 20% less information, and
understand 10% less of what they read compared to people who read the same information in print.
Additionally, staring too long at a screen has been shown to cause numerous health problems, including
blurred vision, dizziness, dry eyes, headaches, and eye strain, at much higher instances than reading print
does. People who use tablets and mobile devices excessively also have a higher incidence of more serious
health issues such as fibromyalgia, shoulder and back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, and muscle strain. I
know that whenever I read from my e-reader for too long, my eyes begin to feel tired and my neck hurts.
We should not add to these problems by giving people, especially young people, more reasons to look at
screens.
Second, it is incredibly narrow-minded to assume that the only service libraries offer is book lending.
Libraries have a multitude of benefits, and many are only available if the library has a physical location.
Some of these benefits include acting as a quiet study space, giving people a way to converse with their
neighbors, holding classes on a variety of topics, providing jobs, answering patron questions, and
keeping the community connected. One neighborhood found that, after a local library instituted
community events such as play times for toddlers and parents, job fairs for teenagers, and meeting spaces
for senior citizens, over a third of residents reported feeling more connected to their community.
Similarly, a Pew survey conducted in 2015 found that nearly two-thirds of American adults feel that
closing their local library would have a major impact on their community. People see libraries as a way to
connect with others and get their questions answered, benefits tablets can’t offer nearly as well or as
easily.

While replacing libraries with tablets may seem like a simple solution, it would encourage people to
spend even more time looking at digital screens, despite the myriad issues surrounding them. It would
also end access to many of the benefits of libraries that people have come to rely on. In many areas,
libraries are such an important part of the community network that they could never be replaced by a
simple object.
