What is a first
responder?
A first responder is a person with specialized
training who is among the first to arrive and provide
assistance at the scene of an emergency, such as
an accident, natural disaster, or terrorism.

A certified first responder is one who has received

certification to provide pre-hospital care in a
certain jurisdiction.
TYPES OF FIRST
RESPONDER
FIREFIGHTER
is a rescuer extensively trained in
firefighting, primarily to extinguish
hazardous fires that threaten life,
property and the environment as
well as to rescue people and
animals from dangerous situations.
POLICE OFFICER
is a warranted law employee of
a police force. In most countries,
"police officer" is a generic term
not specifying a particular rank.
In some, the use of the rank
"officer" is legally reserved for
military personnel.
PARAMEDICS
is a specialist healthcare professional
who responds to emergency calls for
medical help outside of a hospital.
Paramedics mainly work as part of the
emergency medical services (EMS),
most often in ambulances. The scope of
practice of a paramedic varies among
countries, but generally includes
autonomous decision making around
the emergency care of patients.
AND OTHERS LIKE:
First responders typically include law
enforcement officers, including state
troopers, deputies, federal agents,
and school resource officers, as well
as paramedics, emergency medical
technicians, firefighters, rescuers,
military personnel, sanitation
workers, public works, and other
trained members of organizations
connected with this type of work.

CPR MASK

Is a device used to safely deliver rescue

breaths during a cardiac arrest or respiratory arrest.
It protect your hands with a layer
of tape so you can keep trying
hard until your strength gives out
instead of failing from pain or
blood loss.

TAPE AND GLOVES

aircraft, intended for use

been hurt.

BANDAGES
Emergency medical services (EMS), also known as ambulance
services or paramedic services, are emergency services which treat
illnesses and injuries that require an urgent medical response,
providing out-of-hospital treatment and transport to definitive care.
They may also be known as a first aid squad, FAST squad,
emergency squad, rescue squad, ambulance squad, ambulance
corps, life squad or by other initialisms such as EMAS or EMARS.

PURPOSE OF EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICE.

What is an
ambulance and
its function?
is a vehicle equipped to provide
emergency care to sick or injured
people and to get them to
hospital. Ambulances can also be
used to transport patients
between hospitals. There are
several types of ambulance, all
specially equipped and including:
vans (the most common type of
ambulance) four-wheel drives.
is a level of medical care
which is used for victims of life-
threatening illnesses or injuries
until they can be given full
medical care at a hospital. It
can be provided by trained
medical personnel, including
certified first responders,
emergency medical
technicians, and by
qualified bystanders.

WHAT IS A BASIC LIFE SUPPORT?

What is advance
life support? (ALS)

Is a set of life-saving
protocols and skills
that extend basic life
support to further
support the circulation
and provide an open
airway and adequate
ventilation (breathing).
What equipment,
apparatus and medical
supply they use in an
Accident and
Emergency Unit?
THESE INCLUDE:
Tracheal intubation Pleural decompression of tension pneumothorax

Rapid sequence induction Advanced medication administration through

parenteral and enteral routes (IV, IO, PO, PR, ET,
Cardiac monitoring SL, topical, and transdermal)

Cardiac defibrillation not using an automated Advanced cardiac life support (ACLS)
external defibrillator (AED)

Transcutaneous pacing Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) or

Pediatric Education for Pre-Hospital Providers
Intravenous cannulation (IV) (PEPP)

Intraosseous (IO) access and intraosseous Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS), Basic
infusion Trauma Life Support (BTLS) or International
Trauma Life Support (ITLS)
Surgical cricothyrotomy

Needle cricothyrotomy
TRACHEAL INTUBATION
Tracheal intubation, usually
simply referred to as intubation,
is the placement of a flexible
plastic tube into the trachea
(windpipe) to maintain an open
airway or to serve as a conduit
through which to administer
certain drugs.
RAPID SEQUENCE INDUCTION
Is a special process for endotracheal
intubation that is used where the
patient is at a high risk of pulmonary
aspiration or impending airway
compromise. It differs from other
forms of general anesthesia induction
in that artificial ventilation is generally
not provided from the time the patient
stops breathing (when drugs are
given) until after intubation has been
achieved.
CARDIAC DEFIBRILLATION

Is a treatment for life-

threatening cardiac
dysrhythmias, specifically
ventricular fibrillation (VF)
and non-perfusing
ventricular tachycardia (VT).
INTRAVENOUS THERAPY

Is therapy that delivers fluids

directly into a vein. The
intravenous route of
administration can be used
both for injections, using a
syringe at higher pressures;
as well as for infusions,
typically using only the
pressure supplied by gravity.
TYPES OF
HOSPITALS
ACUTE CARE
Hospital that
treats patients in
the acute phase of
an illness or injury.
ADDICTION/SUBSTANCE Hospital that exists solely to provide assessment
ABUSE TREATMENT and treatment of individuals with addictions.
COMMUNITY (GENERAL)
Non-federal, short-term
hospital where diagnostic
and therapeutic services are
available to the public.
PSYCHIATRIC HOSPITAL

Hospital that provides

diagnostic and
treatment services to
patients with mental
and/or emotional
