Removal

1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove Throttle Valve (T.V.) cable adjustment cover and cable from
accelerator cable at top of transaxle. Loosen shift cable adjustment nut from end of shift cable.
2. Remove shift cable from manual select cable joint. Remove retaining clip and shift cable from bracket at
top of transaxle. Loosen accelerator cable adjustment nuts, and disconnect cable from bracket at top of
transaxle. Remove 2 bolts and engine harness bracket from rear of transaxle case.
3. Disconnect electrical connectors from vehicle speed sensor, shift solenoid harness and neutral safety
switch located on transaxle. Remove clip and speedometer cable from speedometer driven gear case.
Remove 2 clamps and oil cooler hoses from cooler pipes. Plug hoses to prevent fluid leaks and
contamination. Remove 2 starter mounting bolts.
4. Raise and support vehicle. Disconnect starter electrical connections, and remove starter. Lower vehicle.
Remove one upper rear transaxle mount-to-bulkhead bolt. Remove 2 upper transaxle-to-engine mounting
bolts.
5. Remove negative battery cable from transaxle. Install Engine Support Fixture (J-28467-A) with
appropriate adapters to engine. Raise and support vehicle. Remove front wheels.
6. Drain transaxle fluid. Remove retaining clips, and remove left and right-side splash shields. Remove

9. Raise and support vehicle. Support transaxle with hydraulic jack. Disconnect transaxle mounts. Remove
transaxle-to-engine mounting bolts. Lower transaxle and remove from vehicle.

Installation

NOTE: Oil cooler must be flushed whenever transaxle is removed for service.

1. To install, reverse removal procedure. Apply grease around cup at center of torque converter. Ensure
torque converter is correctly installed. Distance from torque converter drive lugs to engine mating surface
of transaxle housing should be at least .850" (21.4 mm). Reseat torque converter on the input shaft as
necessary to attain specified clearance.
2. When installing transaxle, guide right-side axle shaft into differential side gear as transaxle is being
raised. After inserting inner CV joints of right and left-side axle shafts into differential side gears, push
inner joints into side gears until snap rings on axle shafts engage with side gears.
3. Tighten nut and bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS. Adjust all control cables. See
ADJUSTMENTS in AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION article. Fill transaxle with appropriate fluid. DO
NOT overfill.
