A Brush With Emptiness: Zen Creativity and the Art of Life

Master Zen calligrapher Alok Hsu Kwang-han and spiritual teacher Raylene Abbott will
inspire and guide you to rest in the spaciousness of your being, to become intimate with
not-knowing, and to allow your brush—and you—to dance from emptiness!

No prior experience with painting or Zen is necessary. It may even be better to

experience the not-knowing of the beginner's mind! We paint by being present,
available, playful and not knowing. As a result, something is transformed inside us and
at the same time manifested through our brush. In the process we come to experience
that we are the art!

Alok is a highly original and internationally acclaimed Zen teacher and calligraphic
painter. Since 1999, he's been holding exhibitions in museums and galleries, teaching
workshops on “the Creativity of Non-doing,” and is best known for creating Zen
Calligraphic Portraits for the healing and awakening of individuals and couples. You can

Raylene, his life partner, exhibits her paintings and teaches with Alok, and is the author
of 6 books on nature, sacred pilgrimage, and the divine feminine. You can learn more

Workshop Location

The workshop will be held at PreEminence Hall, 3213 Walnut Street, Boulder.
Parking and entrance to the Hall is behind The Twisted Pine Brewery.

Workshop Costs

Early registration by March 11: $350.

(including 3 brushes designed by Alok and a complete set of art materials)

Registration after March 11: $400.

(including 3 brushes designed by Alok and a complete set of art materials)

Payment and Refund Policy

+ Workshop enrollment is secured by full payment at the time of registration.

+ All refund requests received by March 28, 2015 are subject to a $75 processing fee.
+ No refunds will be issued for cancellations made after March 28, 2015.

Calligraphic Portraits:

In the days following the workshop, Alok will be available to workshop participants and
the general public for individual personal meetings and calligraphic portraits. Around the
world Alok is best known for creating Zen Calligraphic Portraits for the healing and

What To Bring
Lunch so we can dine together as a community

Tube for artwork (4" x 30" tall)
Comfortable indoor shoes with non-marking soles, as we will be standing a lot
No street shoes in the Hall
Small mat or rug to stand on (optional)
Shawl for warmth during meditations
