Four absolute value equations have been solved graphically.

Check whether the given

solutions are correct or not by showing the steps to solve them algebraically (solve complete
steps). Then answer the following questions.

2|x+1|=9-5
2|x+1|=4
|x+1|=2
x+1=2, x+1=-2
x=1, x=-3

|x-3|=5-2
|x-3|=3
x-3=3, x-3= -3
x=6, x=0

-2|x+5|=2-4
-2|x+5|=-2
|x+5|=1
x+5=1, x+5=-1
x=-4, =-6

There is no solution, because

the value of x is negative.

5. Why might you expect most absolute value equations to have two solutions? Why not three or
four?
They'll only be 2 solutions because the intersection is only 2 points on the
graph, and so two numbers have the same absolute value (and vice versa).
6. Is it possible for an absolute value equation to have no solutions? one solution? If so, what would
each look like graphically?

Yes, it's possible for an absolute value equation to have no solutions. It would look like a V
with the vertex or y axis touching 0.

If the absolute value part were to be isolated or when the graphs intersect at a point, it
usually has one solution. On the graph, it would look like V that isn't touching 0.

7. How do you solve an absolute value equation graphically?

The x values of the points where the curves cross are equal, are the solutions to the
equation.

8. When does an absolute value equation have fewer than two solutions?

An absolute value equation with no solution would most likely be because the result equals to
a number below 0; negative.

When the distance from zero on the number line is zero, the absolute value equation (or
linear) has only one solution.

Peer-to-Peer Activity

Each of you will make five absolute value equations on your own and state whether those equations
have one solution, two solutions, or no solution. Then you will exchange your questions and solve
them algebraically and write an explanation about whether the conjecture is correct or incorrect.
(You must make equations of each type)
3 4 6|x-2|-1= -1
1 2 4+3|x-5|= 16
4|2x-1|-2=10 |5x-2|= 13 = 6|x-2|= 0
= 3|x-5|= 16-4
= 4|2x-1|= 12 = 5x-2= 13, 5x-2= -13 = 6x -12= 0
= 3|x-5|= 12
= |2x-1|= 3 = 5x= 13+2, 5x= -13+2 = 6x= 0+12
= x-5= 4, x-5= -4
2x-1= 3, 2x-1= -3 x= 3, x= -2.2 6 6
= x= 4+5, x= -4+5
2x= 4, 2x= -2 x= 2
x= 9, x= 1
x= 2, x= -1
5
|10x-1|+3= -8
= |10x-1|= -5
= NO SOLUTION
