Mujibnagar Government in 1971

Mujibnagar government was the supreme leadership to guide Bangladeshi people in

the Bangladeshi liberation struggle. Without the formation of a government in that situation we
can’t dream of our liberation. Mujibnagar government included the first cabinet of Bangladesh,
the nascent Bangladeshi diplomatic corps, the Constituent Assembly of Bangladesh, the Mukti
Bahini military, paramilitary and guerrilla forces, and the Independent Bangladesh Radio. This
government played a significant role in our liberation struggle that’s why I choose Mujibnagar
government to write my essay and discus about this historical episode in our history and share
my personal experiences with the present realities.

Mujibnagar Government founded 41 years ago on 17 April 1971 is actually an

achievement in our national history. The 167 MNAs and 293 MPs who formed the Constituent
Assembly satisfying their established commitment to the balloters, gave a genuine shape and
sacred viewpoint making the fantasy of an autonomous Bangladesh a reality.

The formation of the Mujibnagar Government:

The president of the war cabinet at Mujibnagar- Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman;

Acting President in the absence of Bangabandhu- Syed Nazrul Islam

The Prime Minister- Tajuddin Ahmed

The Finance Minister- M. Mansur Ali

The Home, Relief and Rehabilitation Minister- M. Quamruz Zaman

Foreign Affairs and Law Minister- Khandakar Mustaque Ahmed

Commander in Chief (Bangladesh armed forces) - General M. A. G. Osmani.

My personal learning on this significant incident of Mujibnagar government was
outstanding. It helps me to understand about politics and I realize the importance of forming a
government in that situation and learned many things. Below I figure out what my personal
leaning experience from Mujibnagar government:

 How to Keep clam make a decision in a Critical situation: After the operation
searchlight in March 25, our political leaders were keep calm and thinking about their
next steps. Things were very difficult, there were no scope for movement and meeting but
our political leaders were maintain their relationship and meet their hideout and discuss
about our liberation war. After the calm discussion they find a way to fight back against
Pakistan. That’s why they called a meeting a make decisions there. So, my learning is
that, before make a decision you have to discuss it with your colleague or friends. They
will help you to understand and make the best out of it.

 Rational thinking: Though our supreme leader Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was in jail but
our Awami political leaders make their rational decision on behalf of Sheikh Mujibur
Rahman and made him the President. My learning is that, you have to be rational while
you are making a decision.

 Planning & execution: Before April 17, 1971 the leaders discussed and made their plans
what they will do, and who will be selected and who will handle which department. All
the decisions they made then, all came from proper planning before April 17. So if I want
to succeed in my life I have to come up with proper planning and know how to execute.

 Leadership: No plan can be successful without a leader. A plan must be carried out by a
proper leader who will lead the team and direct the team towards the success. Our
supreme leader Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was in jail then but other leaders carried out his
orders accordingly. On the behalf of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman who was the leader in this
liberation war other leaders follow his footsteps and work accordingly his order. That’s
the leadership means and that’s how a team work. I learned many things about leadership
and team work from this Mujibnagar Government incident.
The formation of the Mujibnagar government had great significance for the fact that
the great men who provided leadership to this great event in the absence of our supreme leader
and continued the armed struggle for the next eight months, not allowing break in the unity of
their citizens. Our present government realities are not pleasant at all, they should inspire from
Mujibnagar government and can learn how to build a political team and lead the team for serving
the nation. In present realities we need brave, intellectual and honest political leaders like
Mujibur Rahman, Osman goni, Taj Uddin Ahmed.

In the present context we are not as united as Mujibnagar government. Our leaders are
not valiant nor futuristic. They are greedy and selfish. They just think of their well-being. But
Mujibnagar leaders were selfless, they thought for the nation and people of the country. They
gave us hope and full fill our freedom. But now in present Bangladeshi leaders are fighting with
opposition leaders and whole government system is corrupted. After the Mujibnagar Government
we fought side by side because we had a dream of a free nation. Now we are a free nation but we
don’t have political leader like Taj Uddin ahmed, Syed Nazrul Islam. We don’t have a proper
government, we don’t have fair election. That’s why we had poverty, unemployment, and crisis.
And most importantly our government can’t full fill our basic needs.
Our present government can learn many things from Mujibnagar government. Like:
 Our present government should entitled to all the rights and freedoms to all kinds of
religion, race, color, sex, language and all other political opinion.
 Corruption and unemployment must be eradicated, Education and other basic needs must
be provided.
 Rational decision making and maintain good relationship with other political parties.
 Follow your leader and criticize him if he done something wrong.
 Those who work for the country, gave him chance to serve the nation by make him
leader.
 Mujibnagar govt. has vision so our govt. should have some vision and work on it.

Formation of Mujinagar govt. birth a new nation with the spirit of democracy. It will
remains a testimony to the leadership example of the Bengali people. We hope that our now
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will follow her Father footstep and led the country peacefully and
build Bangladesh a corruption free country.
