Short Essay

Instruction: Write a short reflection on the question below after

reading the story of "Gyges"in Plato's book The Republic. In
summary: "Gyges is a shepherd who stumbles upon a ring
that at his command makes him invisible and, while in
that state, he can indulge in his greed to the fullest without
the fear of getting caught. He can thus escape the restraints
of society, its laws, and punishments. So he kills the king,
seduceshis wife and becomes king himself" (Pojman &
Fieser 2017:67-68). So imagineyou got the ring of Gyges, would you
still do what is good and what is right? In brief, would
you still act morally? Why should you, or not? Write your
answer/s below:
Should I be Moral?

Will, I am a Christian and I follow Jesus and Because of it I still act morally or use the gyges ring is a good
way that cannot compromise my salvation. And actually our subject is Ethics, also called moral
philosophy, the discipline concerned with what is morally good and bad and morally right and wrong.
The term is also applied to any system or theory of moral values or principles, so it means this subject
also will choose the right thing to do just like what I want to choose. Will, we all know that in our life
there a lot of opportunities that give us advantages in any aspects sometimes we grab the opportunity
even though we can hurt someone just for our selfishness just like what Gyges did. But I am different
even though I'm a human that think sometimes bad things but I still choose the right one that I know
this is accordance to Jesus will. Having Gyges ring is so much hard to choose between bad and good
because you can do what you want by the help of the ring, but don't let the devil drive into your mind
let the moral inside your heart works and follow the good thing to do. I am a Seventh-day Adventist and
I follow Jesus. All I want to say is I still want to use the gyges ring but I use it in a good way which cannot
harm anyone.
