CHECKLIST FOR WHOLE CORE DESCRIPTION AT WELLSITE

Having been through the “Lithologic Data Sheets” for the ExxonMobil Banjar-2-4-2
cores, I would say that the descriptions are basically sound. I would like to see more
detailed descriptions of basic parameters, such as colour, bedding contacts,
hardness, cleats and fractures, and also a greater degree of consistency of reporting
between the various geologists doing the descriptions. There is a tendency to leave
boxes blank (e.g. cleats and joints/fractures) which can give the impression that the
features have not been considered even though they are mentioned in the
description. It would be best to fill these in, with brief descriptions of orientation,
condition, etc.

1. Subdivisions of Core Runs: the reasons for subdivision, such as variations in

colour, brightness, etc., should be defined and the types of contacts described e.g.
sharp, gradational, broken, unseen, etc. If two adjacent subdivisions differ only
slightly it is fine to use the term AA (as above) but qualify why it has been
distinguished, say e.g. through a slight colour change. This can sometimes be useful
for correlation purposes.

2. Lithological Description
COAL : colour (black, dark grey or brownish, etc.), hardness (soft, firm, hard),
brightness, lamination, cleats and fractures. Give further details of the latter in
boxes to right.

SHALE : colour, hardness, texture (massive or laminated), organic content and

distribution, and secondary minerals (pyrite, calcite, siderite, etc.). Note : light grey
or olive grey shales are often paleosols and may have associated organic root traces
and slickensides , the later related to soil processes and coring.

SILTY or SANDY SHALE : AA

ORGANIC SHALE : AA

SANDSTONE : colour, grainsize, sorting, hardness, texture (massive or laminated),

clay content , cements.
