Title- Electricity

output
Theory- Efficiency can be calculated using the formula input ×100 % .

Statement of Problem- Is a higher power rated microwave more efficient and cost
effective than a lower power rated microwave?
Aim- To Compare the efficiency and cost effectiveness of two similar microwaves
with different power ratings.
Materials-
- 2 Beaker
- 2 microwaves
- Measuring cup
- Water
- Calculator
Procedure-
1. Measure 250ml of water into two measuring cylinder

2. Pour the 250ml water into each Beaker.

3. Place each Beaker into a separate microwave and set a timer for two minutes

4. After the two minutes remove each Beaker form the microwave

5. Pour the remaining water for both cups into separate measuring cylinder

6. Compare the water remaining in each cup to the measured 250ml

7. Record amount of water evaporated in each Beaker

output
8. Use the formula input ×100 % to calculate efficiency, output being the

remaining water left in the container and input, the amount of water

measured at 250ml.
W
9. Using the formula for Power P= t calculate the power of both microwaves

using the amount of evaporated water as the work value and time 2 minutes

converted to seconds.

10. From the calculations of power calculate the cost for each microwave by

using the total power used multiplied by the cost unit (1W=$50.00)

11. Compare the total cost of power for each microwave to compare their

effectiveness per unit cost.

Variables
Independent Variable- Heat
Manipulated Variable- Different Power rating
Controlled variable- Time and volume of water

Expected Results
It is expected that the power efficiency of the microwaves will be less then 100%
because all of the input energy will not be transferred to heat.

Possible Limitation
- Lack of an ammeter to measure input current
- Alternating voltage supplied to the microwave
Possible Sources of Error
- Wrong timing of the beating of the water
- Inaccurate water measurements
Recommendation
- Accurately time the water heating in the microwave
- Double check calculations to make sure they are correct
Precaution
- Use microwave safe materials
- Avoid touching using the microwave with wet hands
