MAGNETIC TAPE: DATA RECORDER

The DATA BASE LOADER for the FMC, is a light weight portable entry device used to
transfer data from a magnetic tape to the memory of the FMC.

Updating of the DATA BASE is performed in a 28-day cycle, using the DATA BASE
LOADER, in about 5 minutes for each FMC.

The unit is self contained and recieves power via the cable connecting the loader to the
FMC. A Heater & Fan within the unit maintain it at an acceptable operating temperature
when power is applied.

The front face of the unit includes:

- a CONNECTOR SOCKET,

- a FUNCTION SWITCH,

- 7 LAMPS (ON....DATA),

- a POWER SWITCH,

- a TAPE CARTRIDGE STOWAGE,

- an EJECT KNOB,

- 2 FUSES.

FLOPPY DISK: DATA RECORDER.

The data loader for the FMC is a 3.5 inches floppy disk drive system used to transfer
data from diskettes to the FMC database.

Updating of the DATA BASE is performed in a 28-day cycle, using the DATA BASE
LOADER, in about 5 minutes for each FMC.

This ARINC 615 data loader uses a high speed ARINC 429 data bus.

Thus, the data loader is connected to the ARINC 429 data bus through an interface
cable (15 ft / 3.6 m) and a special ARINC 615 to 603 adaptator.

The disk drive is protected by a lid and composed of the disk housing, and eject
pushbutton, a disk drive activity indicator and seven status indicators:

- PROG : Transfer in progress

- CHNG : Change disk

- COMP : Transfer complete,

- RDY : Ready,

- XFER : Data transfer failure,

- R/W : Read/Write error,

- HRDW : Hardware malfunction.

CAUTION: Before connecting loom between data loader and the rear panel 120VU, you
must perform the following actions in order to avoid electrical arcs between
the devices. On overhead circuit brekear panel 21VU, open FMS SYS1 (2)
SUPPLY circuit breaker 4CK1 (2) and FMS SYS1(2) dim circuit breaker
5CK1 (2) (location 101/111 to J14).

THE MAGNETIC TAPE DATA LOADER

OPERATIONS

1) Connect the cable between the unit and the appropriate FMC loader connector (on
the maintenance panel).

2) Set the FUNCTION switch to position 1, and insert the tape cartridge. Turn the
power on.

3) If the temperature is within limits, the loader performs self test, and upon successful
completion of the test starts loading the data tape. READY lamp is lit when the self
test is completed.

4) The XFRINPROG lamp is lit when the data tape is being read. After tape is read, it
is rewound to the beginning and the XFRCOMPL lamplights. The data is now loaded.

5) Eject the cartridge, turn the power off and disconnect the connector cable.

CAUTION:

When the tape cartridge is removed, NEVER place it on operating electronic or

electrical equipment, this could destroy the tape contents.

FAILURES

Failures are indicated by lamps on the front panel.

The UNIT FAIL lamp is lit if the unit fails, a self test or an abnormal condition exists.

The READ FAIL lamp is lit when 20 attemps to read the same block of data is
unsuccessful and the tape is rewound.

The DATAXFRFAIL lamp is lit when an interface communications error exists and the
tape is rewound.

Selftest can be initiated by placing the FUNCTION switch to "SELFTEST" priorto

power MAP. When power is applied, the unit initiates the self test routine which
can be terminated only when the operator turns the power off.

THE FLOPPY DISC DATA LOADER

OPERATIONS

1) Connect the cable between the unit and the appropriate FMC loader connector (on
the maintenance panel).

2) On data loader, check that power switch is at OFF. Connect loom to data loader
socket; then connect "special" adaptor and set power switch to ON.

3)Insert the floppy disk. Check that all lights flash. When they stop flashing, the RDY
and PROG indicators come ON. Between 10 and 40 minutes later, the RDY and PROG
lights go off and the COMP indicator light comes ON.

4)Eject the floppy disk.

5)Place the power switch to OFF. On panel 21VU, open circuit breakers 4CK1(2) and
5CK1(2) and disconnect "special" adaptor on lateral panel 120VU.

CAUTION:

When the floppy disk is removed, NEVER place it on operating electronic or electrical
equipment, this could destroy the diskette contents.

FAILURES

Failures are indicated by lamps on the front panel.

The HRDW lamp lits if the unit fails.

The R/W lamp lits when the data loader cannot read data on the floppy disk or cannot
write data into the FMS data bank.

The XFER lamp lits when an interface communication error exists.

Self test:

A self test is automatically initiated when switching on the data loader. The related
failure indicators lit up if any failure is detected.
