CDU DESCRIPTION
BRT knob :
Alphanumeric keys :
The pressing of any alpha or numeric key causes that symbol to appear in the
scratchpad area.
They provide entry of data from the scratchpad into the selected CRT line.
They provide access to data or the fonction associated with the LSK line.
If an LSK has no information adjacent to it, pressing the LSK is assumed non operative
and the message NOT ALLOWED is displayed in the scratchpad.
1 2
Mode keys.
1 - DIR (direct) :
This fixed WPT can be selected from the active F-PLN via an adjacent LS key or it
can be manually entered by the crew through the scratchpad.
2 - Mode :
Allows the selection of the strategic mode available for all the remaining part of the
flight.
Gives prediction of time (GMT if clock available) and estimated fuel on board
(EFBO) at destination for the different strategic modes.
1 2
For climb and descent phases only, allows the crew to know at which time and
distance, and altitude will be intercepted for the selected strategic mode and two
tactical modes.
In CRZ only activation (without prediction) is possible for MAX endurance or manual
speed.
2 - INIT (initial) :
Allows initialization of the FMC by :
- selecting a route
- making IRS alignment
- entering weight data.
1 2
1 - REF (reference) :
Before take off or in flight, allows the reviewing of F-PLN and time, speed and
altitude WPT by WPT throughout the flight plan.
1 2
Displays parameters of special interest to the flight crew during take off and
approach phase.
Allows revision as with the active flight plan plus prediction on the flight plan for any
selected performance mode.
1 2
The ENGINE OUT key does not have a specific associated page but modifies the
contents of :
- F-PLN page
- SEC F-PLN page
- MODE.
2 - PROG (progress) :
Allows :
- to enter an OFFSET,
- to have altitude and navigation data,
- to access the FUEL PRED and DES FORECAST page.
Function keys.
Next page :
↑ ↓ (scroll keys) :
When the data page is more longer than the screen, it can be slewed (↑ up, ↓ down)
with these keys.
CLR (clear) :
The CLEAR key can be used to erase errors from the scratchpad.
The first press clears the last character, the second press clears the next
character etc...
Annunciator.
Display :
Illuminates amber when the page displayed on the CDU does not coincide with the
active situation in the FMC.
MSG (message) :
FAIL :
OFST (offset) :
Illuminates amber when a lateral OFFSET has been selected on the progress page.

DATA LOADER
This interface allows updating of the DATA BASE for each FMC every 28 days.
ACARS
The ACARS allows to load flight plan when the plane is flying.
EFIS
IRS
FMC → IRS : Before departure, the IRS’s must be aligned through an FMC procedure.
IRS → FMC : Each IRS gives an inertial A/C position to each FMC.
Then the FMC computes a triple mix inertial A/C position.
This position is updated with the DME information.
ADC
The ADC transmits pressure altitude, Mach, calibrated airspeed, true airspeed, total air
temperature and static air temperature.
Normal use :
Each ADC can feed both FMC’s in case of failure of one ADC.
VOR
DME
ILS
ILS transmits :
- ILS frequency,
- localizer deviation.
The ILS receivers are always manually tuned by the ILS frequency selector and the ILS
panel.
FAC
FCC
The FMC controls via the horizontal navigation via the FCC.
TCC
FCU
TRP
FQ
FF
AIDS
FMC sends the flight number and date of selected DATA BASE to AIDS.

STUDENT NOTES
The DATA BASE LOADER for the FMC, is a light weight portable entry device used to
transfer data from a magnetic tape to the memory of the FMC.
Updating of the DATA BASE is performed in a 28-day cycle, using the DATA BASE
LOADER, in about 5 minutes for each FMC.
The unit is self contained and recieves power via the cable connecting the loader to the
FMC. A Heater & Fan within the unit maintain it at an acceptable operating temperature
when power is applied.
- a CONNECTOR SOCKET,
- a FUNCTION SWITCH,
- 7 LAMPS (ON....DATA),
- a POWER SWITCH,
- an EJECT KNOB,
- 2 FUSES.
The data loader for the FMC is a 3.5 inches floppy disk drive system used to transfer
data from diskettes to the FMC database.
Updating of the DATA BASE is performed in a 28-day cycle, using the DATA BASE
LOADER, in about 5 minutes for each FMC.
This ARINC 615 data loader uses a high speed ARINC 429 data bus.
Thus, the data loader is connected to the ARINC 429 data bus through an interface
cable (15 ft / 3.6 m) and a special ARINC 615 to 603 adaptator.
The disk drive is protected by a lid and composed of the disk housing, and eject
pushbutton, a disk drive activity indicator and seven status indicators:
- RDY : Ready,
OPERATIONS
1) Connect the cable between the unit and the appropriate FMC loader connector (on
the maintenance panel).
2) Set the FUNCTION switch to position 1, and insert the tape cartridge. Turn the
power on.
3) If the temperature is within limits, the loader performs self test, and upon successful
completion of the test starts loading the data tape. READY lamp is lit when the self
test is completed.
4) The XFRINPROG lamp is lit when the data tape is being read. After tape is read, it
is rewound to the beginning and the XFRCOMPL lamplights. The data is now loaded.
5) Eject the cartridge, turn the power off and disconnect the connector cable.
CAUTION:
FAILURES
The UNIT FAIL lamp is lit if the unit fails, a self test or an abnormal condition exists.
The READ FAIL lamp is lit when 20 attemps to read the same block of data is
unsuccessful and the tape is rewound.
The DATAXFRFAIL lamp is lit when an interface communications error exists and the
tape is rewound.
OPERATIONS
1) Connect the cable between the unit and the appropriate FMC loader connector (on
the maintenance panel).
2) On data loader, check that power switch is at OFF. Connect loom to data loader
socket; then connect "special" adaptor and set power switch to ON.
3)Insert the floppy disk. Check that all lights flash. When they stop flashing, the RDY
and PROG indicators come ON. Between 10 and 40 minutes later, the RDY and PROG
lights go off and the COMP indicator light comes ON.
5)Place the power switch to OFF. On panel 21VU, open circuit breakers 4CK1(2) and
5CK1(2) and disconnect "special" adaptor on lateral panel 120VU.
CAUTION:
When the floppy disk is removed, NEVER place it on operating electronic or electrical
equipment, this could destroy the diskette contents.
FAILURES
The R/W lamp lits when the data loader cannot read data on the floppy disk or cannot
write data into the FMS data bank.
Self test:
A self test is automatically initiated when switching on the data loader. The related
failure indicators lit up if any failure is detected.
Location
Description
LOCATION
The connectors for the DATA BASE LOADER are on the maintenance panel (470VU).
The connector for sys 1 is the 6 CK1 & for SYS 2, it is the 6 CK2.
DESCRIPTION
Those connectors enable the connection of a loader to update the data base every 28
days.
