Activity 7.1 Reflecting on Learning from Chapter 7

During the course of your study of this text, we recommend that you keep a learning journal to track and

reflect on some or all of the following:

 Thoughts and reactions in response to the text

o Rubrics are my favorite grading approach

o Performance assessment is seen as the most authentic assessment style

o Follow RAFTS system

o Use of performance assessments encourages student involvement in the evaluation

process

o Rubrics give students clear steps on how to improve in each area.

 What you are confused about and what you now understand that you didn’t before

o Understand how to evaluate rubrics I develop if they are too general, if they are fair

o Content, evidence provided, sampling need to be reviewed to ensure a quality assessment

o Expectations must be clear and specific

 Questions you have now

o How often should rubrics be used?

o How to make the RAFT approach more applicable to Early Childhood Education

 Barriers that may need to be overcome in order to implement what the text is teaching, along with

possible solutions

o More practice

o Practice in face-to-face learning

o Developing assessments that fit all students level/needs and instructional approaches
 Implementation activities you have tried along with observations, questions, and possible

revisions to what you did

o Designed multiple writing assessments for my students using RAFTS

o I primarily design rubrics because I believe in project-based learning. In ECE we

approach the majority of learning through projects. Rubrics helps evaluate many aspects

of the students’ performance.

 Changes in student attitudes, behaviors, and achievement that you believe are attributable to what

you are implementing as a result of your study

o Each week feeling more confident with developing assessments

o Becoming excited and wanting my own class to develop projects and assessments for

o Strengthen belief that performance task are the most effective way to assess.

 Your level of mastery of the chapter learning targets\

o My mastery is 8/10. I need more practice with developing rubrics for all subject areas.

Need practice with presenting expectations of an assessment and making it clear to a

young student.
