Activity 2.1 Reflecting on Learning from Chapter 2

During the course of your study of this text, we recommend that you keep a learning

journal to track and reflect on some or all of the following:

• Thoughts and reactions in response to the text

o Assessments must have a clear purpose

o There should be a balance of formative and summative assessments

o Sometimes the teacher needs to assess their approach if student seem to not

be meeting expectations.

o Assessments should be seen as a road map of where the class needs to go

o Make sure assessments are accurately addressing intended learning

goals/objectives

o Effective feedback occurs in a cycle

• What you are confused about and what you now understand that you didn’t

before

o Stars vs. stairs teachers can’t only leave it at what a student did well. They

always need to provide what the student did well and what they can do next

• Barriers that may need to be overcome in order to implement what the text

is teaching, along with possible solutions

o I need to remember to not only say “Good job” but give guidance on what

students can do next to further develop their skill

o Addressing partial understanding of content taught in the remote setting

o Use more concrete examples of strong work and weak work

1
o Teach student to self-reflect on their abilities and asses what they need to

develop their understanding

• Implementation activities you have tried along with observations,

questions, and possible revisions to what you did

o Attempting to use Stars and Stairs in my feedback to students

o I’ve been trying to build in class time where students can reflect on their own

abilities/needs

• Changes in student attitudes, behaviors, and achievement that you believe

are attributable to what you are implementing as a result of your study

o Students seem to be more confident in their ability when I use the stars and

stairs feedback method. They are more willing to learn how to meet my

expectations.

o Students are starting to become more aware of self-reflection. I think it is

going to take some practice for them to become comfortable with this new

concept.

• Your level of mastery of the chapter learning targets

o I feel like I have a high level of mastery on the information from this chapter. I

have had past classes on assessments. This chapter was a refresher to my

existing knowledge. One new thing I learned that I plan to remember is the

Four Characteristics of Effective Feedback.
