Activity 6.1 Reflecting on Learning from Chapter 6

During the course of your study of this text, we recommend that you keep a learning journal to

track and reflect on some or all of the following:

 Thoughts and reactions in response to the text

o Written response assessment can be effective for students who have good skills

and a strong writing foundation. If a student does not have a strong foundation in

writing, they will struggle on written response questions mainly because they are

struggling with writing not because they are unfamiliar with the content.

o In ECE for written responses we typically allow students to draw a picture then

explain their writing to the teacher so we can get a full picture of what the student

knows without limiting them based on their writing skills

 What you are confused about and what you now understand that you didn’t before

o I now feel more confident in developing a written response assessment

o I need to build skills to judge when is the best to use a written response

assessment versus another format of assessment

 Questions you have now and answers to previous questions you have discovered

o How to gauge how many items should be included in a written assessment?

o  How do I determine if the student’s answer meets the expectations for the

question-answer? Should there be a checklist or a rubric of specific Concepts a

student must include in their response?

o  How do I get students to use extended written responses in the remote

environment?

1
 Barriers that may need to be overcome in order to implement what the text is teaching,

along with possible solutions

o Typically, every day, I use written response assignments to assess students’

knowledge. Will we work on a concept, and then students will be asked to write a

one-word response or a sentence on their whiteboard to share their answer.

o For my lesson, I tried to get students to do a written response assignment for

homework, but many seem not to complete their homework. Hence, I was not

able to assess some of the student’s independent writing ability.

 Implementation activities you have tried along with observations, questions, and possible

revisions to what you did

o The written response seems like a challenging task for my students because they

are young and in their very distracting home environments. There’s also no

opportunity for one on one or a quiet environment for assessment.

 Changes in student attitudes, behaviors, and achievement that you believe are attributable

to what you are implementing as a result of your study

o I look forward to developing more written response style assessments in the

future. I tried to integrate short written response assessments into my lessons each

day.

 Your level of mastery of the chapter learning targets

o My Mastery of this chapter is 9 out of 10. I still want more practice with

developing written assessments and want to learn how to adapt written

assessments for young students
