Introduction to Personal
Development
First Semester A.Y. 2021—2022
Objectives
This course is offered to Grade 11 students
for the First Semester—Academic Year
2021– 2022.
This course also gives you an insight on
knowing yourself, the stages that you will
undergo as you go through your adolescent
life. The changes that you will undertake
physically, mentally, emotionally and spirit-
ually. It will also tackle on how you should
deal with problems that a teenager usually
face during this phase in your life.
This course is not in anyway will change
your attitude nor principles in life. It will
only show you the possible and proper way
to deal with doable problems and the solu-
tions that you can form while you are dis-
covering yourself and the journey that lies
ahead.
This course will also deal with some topics
that maybe sensitive to some students. Top-
ics regarding Family, Relationships, Sex,
Health, Ethics and Morality. Students should
be open-minded especially when topics
mentioned above are to be discussed during
this semester. The topics mentioned is not
intended to malign nor judge a student
based on his or her status, whether it be on
Family, Relationships or Sexual Orientation.
This may serve as your guide as you go
through life and can equip you with ade-
quate knowledge and decision-making
skills. As you move towards your goals and
making your dreams and ambitions a reali-
ty, you may encounter confusion, apprehen-
sion and indecisions along the way, this
course would serve as your guide towards
making the right decisions basing it on how
well and deep you know yourself.

Requirements and Grading System
As with all subjects, requirements should be met
and submitted in order to get a passing or high
grade depending on the quality of the work sub-
mitted.
Here are the needed requirements for this sub-
ject, Personal Development:
 Dictionary
 Notebook for you to write your ideas and re-
flections
 Black Ballpen
 Internet Connection (for supplemental Activi-
ties)
The grading system for this course are as follows:
10 points—Grammar
Correct grammar. All your quizzes and exams will
be in essay form.
30 points—Content
Content. Your essay should contain the idea that
you want to express in order to answer the ques-
tions, whether it be a case study or a personal re-
flection. The content of your essay should make
sense and be clear and concise in relation to the
question.
10 points—Presentation
Presentation. Your essay papers should be pre-
sentable in such a way that the writing should be
legible, no erasures. The essay has followed the
guidelines on when to start a new paragraph. A
dirty paper will give you a grade of 0 in the
Presentation Department.
Given the guidelines above, you now have an idea
of our subject and what you will be expecting in
the coming months. Good luck and study well.

Rules of this Class
 Never be late in attending the class. It is a
must that you should never be late in attend-
ing this class. As they say:” Opportunity waits
for no one.” So the opportunity is presented
and all you have to do is grab it by attending
the class punctually. And if you are perennially
late, you will be accustomed to the fact that
being late will always be acceptable and that

Cheating is disallowed in this class. A work
that was copied by another classmate will
have a grade of 0 for the original essay and the
duplicated copy. Also, you will fail the subject
once it is proven that your work is a copy of
another classmate’s work. That is why we
have a student activity sheet, for you to write
down the answers using the traditional way
and not use a computer. It is easier to write
down what and how you feel rather than type
it. Learn to write down your answers. In that
way, you’ll not just improve your handwriting
skills, but also sentence construction and
memorization.
 Submit everything on time. All case studies
and quizzes should be submitted on time. Late
submission will merit you a maximum grade
of 25 points out of 50 provided everything is
in order and correct. The reason why it should
be submitted on time is to train you to meet
deadlines and not make excuses about the rea-
sons why you did not submit it on time.
 Questions should be answered properly. If
the questions are in English format, then an-
swer the questions in English language. And if
in Tagalog, then you use Tagalog in answering
the questions. It is improper to answer ques-
tions written in Tagalog in the English format
and vice versa.
 Answer everything as Honest as possible.
In Personal Development, students are ex-
pected to answer questions honestly. In devel-
oping your personality, your guide in life will
be the answers that you will learn. In other
words, your opinion matters but your opinion
does not necessarily state that it is the truth.
Your answers will determine if it is the right
or needs improvement and guidance to fur-

ther strengthen your personality, thus making
right decisions in the future is easier. It might
not be an easy decision to make but doing
good and being morally right should always
take precedence in facing problems and mak-
ing those tough decisions.
 Stick to your scheduled time. In the front
cover of your modules, there is a schedule for
you to consult me using Messenger or thru
Text Message. Stick to your schedule. Students
who will drop me a message that is not their
scheduled time will be ignored. All of you have
your own schedules to follow so that all can
have the chance to ask questions regarding
their modules and quizzes / assignments.
Again, stick to your schedules.
 Messaging using SMS (Text Message). In the
event that Messenger is not available, you can
reach me through SMS messaging or text mes-
sage. Do introduce yourself first before asking
me queries regarding your modules. Students
who will not introduce themselves formally
thru text shall be ignored and blocked.
 Adding Students to our Group Chat and Fa-
cebook Group. It is a requirement that when
you join our group chat in Messenger and
Google Classroom, the name should appear as
your real name with your surname. I will not
accept names like: akosijuan, therealjuan, etc.
It should be imperative that you will use your
real name and surname. This is an online class,
but a formal class also. So it is expected that
you will use your real name. Do not use nick-
names or you will not be accepted. Do not
post anything in our chat room that is not
related to our class. Anyone posting any-
thing that is not related to our class will be
removed from the group and I will call the
attention of your parents/guardian with
regards to your behavior inside the chat
room.

Final note:
This class is for your development. As such, all
notes should be read and all quizzes submitted on
time. The internet will be utilized for your refer-
ence only. But the answers will be all you. You will
not be judged based on your opinion. Everything
will be based on how you foresee your life and the
direction you will go. Again, good luck to all. I will
be expecting you to be in our Facebook Group and
Messenger before school starts.
MD1—Lesson— 1 Knowing Oneself
Personal Development can be defined as “the pro-
cess of improving yourself”. Most people would say
that they know themselves very well. But do they
really know themselves that deep? It is easier said
than done to know oneself as Katherine Sharp
said in the above image.

Let us pause for a moment and
reflect on something before
moving on with the lesson.
Think about what you want to be when you were
in the Elementary. Then recall your ambition
when you presented it during the Assisian Integra-
tion. Then compare those with what you want to
be now that you are in Senior High School.
Hold that thought!
If you did the activity above, then you have an
idea if you know yourself that much if your
dreams and aspirations are the same since you
were in the elementary. If not, maybe we can
charge it “a change of heart”. Maybe you had a
change of heart because of reasons that are situa-
tional, i.e. In demand jobs, high paying jobs, etc.

And they say that “the only permanent thing in this
world is change.”
But if we were to look into you change of heart in
a more detailed manner, can you answer the
question :”What made you change your mind.” Is
it because of influence of peers? Advice of parents
and relatives? A best friend who wants you as a
partner while going through college?
If a parent’s advice affected your decision, it may
be a wise decision. But if a friend or a boyfriend /
girlfriend is the major factor why you changed
your ambition, then chances are you do not know
yourself that well. It maybe time for you to stop
for a while and think about what your future and
what you really want to be once you finished your
Senior High School. If your reason of taking a cer-
tain academic course is because of all your friends
are taking that course, does that mean that you
should too even if what you want is different from
what they want? Is looking for what you want to
be in the future giving you a hard time? From that
stand point alone, you are exhibiting signs that
you do not know yourself. Let us stop right here
and maybe try to explore some of the things you
need to know yourself better.
One of the best quotes came from a philosopher
named Socrates. Socrates created the “Socratic
Method”.
The Socratic Method is a form of cooperative and
argumentative dialogue between individuals, based
on asking and answering questions to stimulate
Critical Thinking and to draw out ideas and under-
lying presumptions.
Socrates created the said method so as to get as
many opinions from people and eliminate all the
undesirable answers thereby formulating an an-
swer with the least contradictions.

Aristotle (384—322 B.C.), considered as the third
pillar of Ancient Greek Philosophy and a student of
Plato at the Academy used one of his theories that
deals with universals. The theory of Universals is a
classical solution to the Problem of Universals. Uni-
versals are the characteristics or qualities that or-
dinary objects or things have in common.
For Aristotle, the beginning of Wisdom is really
knowing yourself first. Know yourself first before
knowing others. One aspect that we can use in
this analogy is that if you do not know yourself
that well, how can you know others. In the same
picture, you cannot love others if you do not love
yourself. That is why, knowing yourself is very
important in having a successful and fruitful life.
It is possible to know oneself, but what do you
need to do to start the process or journey? Where
should you begin? Questions that we will try to
answer in this module.

Maybe you are wondering why
do we still need to discover and
know ourselves. Can we do that
on our own?
According to www.psychologytoday.com, there
are benefits of having Self-Knowledge or knowing
oneself.
1. Happiness—you will be happier when you
can express who you are. Expressing your de-
sires will make it more likely that you get
what you want.
2. Less inner conflict—When your outside ac-
tions are in accordance with your inside feel-
ings and values, you will experience less inner
conflict.

3. Better decision-making— When you know
yourself, you are able to make better choices
about everything. Whether those decisions
involve petty decisions like choosing what
blouse or t-shirt to wear, to those very signifi-
cant decisions like who would like to be your
partner for life. You’ll have guidelines that you
can apply to solve life’s varied problems.
4. Self - control—When you know yourself that
well and that deep, you will understand what
motivates you to resist bad habits and develop
good ones. You’ll have the insight to know
which values and goals triggers your will pow-
er.
5. Resistance to social pressure—When you
are grounded in your values and preferences,
you are less likely to say “yes” when you want
really want to say is “no.” As the saying goes:”

6. Tolerance and Understanding of others—
your awareness of your own foibles and strug-
gles can help you empathize with others.
7. Vitality and Pleasure—Being who you truly
are helps you feel more alive and makes your
experience of life richer, larger and more ex-
citing.
We can also use what Maria Vida G. Caparas used
in her book Personal Development—Discovering
the Key to Success.
1. Understanding Personality—An individual’s
personality consists of the physical, mental,
emotional, social and spiritual makeup. An in-
dividual has a perception and database of in-
formation regarding these attributes.
2. Appreciating Values—Values pertain to the
moral codes, norms of conduct, and ethical
principles a person adheres to. These values
guide the day-to-day life of a person. Whatev-
er one believes in prompts a person to act in a

son’s existence. Through the body, one can
