To whom it may concern,

S.B. 43, North Carolina’s recent Senate passage to allow concealed guns in churches on school

grounds removes all previous protection of school children against firearms. The ramifications of this

bill increase the likelihood of devastating fatalities in school systems, setting a precedent for lax gun

prohibition. While bearing arms is often cited as an American right and safety tool, firearms on school

property lead to deadly consequences and are often not a necessary defense instrument. An FBI

study of 160 active shooter incidents from 2000 to 2013 confirmed that only one was stopped by an

individual with a valid firearm permit. 21 incidents were stopped by unarmed civilians. Individuals

additionally only successfully defended themselves via a gun in roughly 1% of crimes, raising the

question as to why S.B. 43 permits firearm carry on school grounds.

This legislation puts the lives of children in severe harm's way. Safeguard our community and

research more into S.B. 43.
