WEEK 1 & 2: READING VISUAL ARTS LECTURE Oct 5 & 12, 2020

READING IS IMPORTANT…
Reading is important because it develops the mind. ... Understanding the written word is one way the mind grows in its
ability. Teaching young children to read helps them develop their language skills. It also helps them learn to listen.

THE ROLE OF PICTURE IN READING DEVELOPMENT

 Pictures help develop story sense. Children learn the beginning, middle and end of a story and can often relate to
the age-appropriate issues and conflicts presented in the picture.
 Picture allow an entirely different, more interactive communication between parent and child.

HOW DO ILLUSTRATIONS HELP THE READERS?

 Illustrations are widely used in children’s books because of their visual appeal and to help the child understand the
text better.
 Illustrations help the early reader to associate objects and actions with words. This helps the child to begin
comprehending the words and move onto becoming a fluent reader.
 Illustrations also hold the attention of an early reader and help the child to move the narrative forward without
adult help. (additional)

WHAT IS THE MEANING OF PICTURE READING?

 Picture for young readers are building blocks that promote literacy, vocabulary skills, sentence structure and story
analysis.
 The rhythm and rhyme of picture makes them easy to understand and fun to read aloud, allowing children to learn
words quickly.

WHAT IS A BOOK WITH PICTURES CALLED?

Picture Book is a term that is today typically used in one of two ways:
a. A story that includes images.
b. A book typically for pre-readers with art or pictures and that most of the time does not have a story –
meaning it might have words, but not to convey any kind of plot or character.
These are very often baby’s first picture dictionary or a Concept Book. Picture Books are often available as
hardbound, softbound or board books. (additional)

 The purpose of reading is to connect the ideas on the page to what you already know.
 If you don't know anything about a subject, then pouring words of text into your mind is like pouring water into
your hand.

BENEFITS OF READING
1. Increases Verbal/ Writing Skills – Reading improves your ability to comprehend written material – a skill helpful
in any career.
2. Helps articulate thoughts - Reading improves your vocabulary and makes a you more creative thinker.

WHAT IS READING?
 Reading is the process of looking at a series of written symbols and getting meaning from them.
 When we read, we use our eyes to receive written symbols (letters, punctuation marks and spaces) and we use our
brain to convert them into words, sentences and paragraphs that communicate something to us.
 Reading can be silent (in our head) or aloud (so that other people can hear). (additional)
WEEK 1 & 2: READING VISUAL ARTS LECTURE Oct 5 & 12, 2020

 Reading is a receptive skill - through it we receive information. But the complex process of reading also requires
the skill of speaking, so that we can pronounce the words that we read. In this sense, reading is also a productive
skill in that we are both receiving information and transmitting it (even if only to ourselves). (additional)

HOW DOES CAPTIONS HELPS THE READERS?

 Captions can provide struggling readers with additional print exposure, improving foundational reading skills.
 These supports can help boost foundational reading skills, such as
o Phonics
o Word recognition and;
o Fluency
for a number of students.
 Given the wide (and inexpensive) availability of captioned and subtitled media on broadcast television, on DVDs, and online, it can be a
valuable addition to your teaching of diverse learners. (additional)

WHAT IS THE KEY TO GREAT COMMUNICATION AND WRITING SKILLS?

 You guessed it, READING. It is not a secret that READING IS THE KEY TO SUCCESS.
 It has been proven that children who read better, perform better in school and have a more active imagination,
leading to a larger world and more possibilities for success.

ROLE OF PICTURE BOOK AND ILLUSTRATED BOOK

 In a picture book the drawings are there to relay the story, sometimes with no text whatsoever.
 Whereas the illustrated book’s drawings are there to assist in telling the story and to highlight certain parts of the
narrative.

ILLUSTRATED BOOKS PICTURE BOOKS

Stories embellished with illustrations Stories with illustrations
The illustrations enhance the story-line The illustrations are highly important to reinforce the narrative
The illustrations tell what a particular scene is about The words and illustrations act together to tell the whole story-line

There are 5 separate strategies that together form the High 5 Reading Strategy.
1. Activating background knowledge. Research has shown that better comprehension occurs when students are
engaged in activities that bridge their old knowledge with the new. ...
2. Questioning. ...
3. Analyzing text structure. ...
4. Visualization. ...
5. Summarizing.
WEEK 1 & 2: READING VISUAL ARTS LECTURE Oct 5 & 12, 2020

1. ACTIVATING BACKGROUND KNOWLEDGE

 Research has shown that better comprehension occurs when students are engaged in activities that bridge
their old knowledge with the new.
 For example, a simple question like “what do you know about … (a particular topic)” will stimulate students’
previous knowledge of that topic.
 This will help them connect the current reading to their already existing knowledge and make the new
reading more stimulating and engaging.
 The strategy allows students to work their way up from an already existing schema, instead of starting a
new one.

2. QUESTIONING
 Encourage students to frame questions before and after reading to increase their comprehension. Each
student should be able to reflect on three main questions, namely, a right now question, an analytical
question, and a research question.
 A ‘right now question’ focuses on the material presented. What is the essence of the material read? What
are the facts that are being mentioned?
 An ‘analytical question’ requires students to ponder over what they have learnt. What does the author
want me to understand from this material?
 A ‘research question’ encourages the students to look for information beyond what is in the text. This
allows for more comprehensive active learning to occur.

3. ANALYZING TEXT STRUCTURE

 This requires students to learn how to analyze or comprehend the structure of a text. Students are taught
to identify the pattern by which writers organize their material. This may be in the form of cause-effect
pattern, problem-solution pattern, or a descriptive pattern like a list, web or a matrix pattern.
 Understanding the pattern in which the material is presented allows the students to comprehend the
information better.
 It is important to teach all the patterns of a text structure to the students, as each structure is different and
takes time to learn.
 They should also be taught to make use of subheadings, labels, captions, tables, graphs, etc. as these help
students to understand the material better.
4. VISUALIZATION
 The fourth strategy stresses on the importance of visualizing the material. Students should be encouraged to
form visual images in their head as they read the text, which will help in better comprehension.
 Research suggests that students should visualize them as structural images or diagrams instead of mere
pictures, as pictures have a tendency to fade.

5. SUMMARIZING
 The last technique is to summarize the material read. Research has indicated that the ability to summarize
enhances comprehension.
 Block and Pressley defined summarize as “the ability to delete irrelevant details, combine similar ideas,
condense main ideas, and connect major themes into concise statements that capture the purpose of a
reading for the reader.” A student making use of the other four strategies will find it easier to summarize the
material. They can summarize the material in the form of diagrams, either visually or in writing.
WEEK 1 & 2: READING VISUAL ARTS LECTURE Oct 5 & 12, 2020

 Analyzing Images
 Rationale
Use this strategy to guide students through a close analysis of an image. By following the steps in this image-analysis
procedure, students develop awareness of historical context, develop critical thinking skills, enhance their
observation and interpretive skills, and develop conceptual learning techniques. You can use this strategy with any
visual media, including a piece of art, photograph, political cartoon, propaganda poster, or video clip.
 Procedure
 Select an Image

ASSIGNMENT #1

SELECT AN IMAGE
Choose an image that lends itself to deep analysis by students. This analysis strategy works best when the image is one
that reflects (intentionally or not) a particular opinion, point of view, or perspective. Visual art, propaganda images,
photographs, and political cartoons are good examples of visual media that reflect a perspective.

1. Look deeply at the picture for a good long time. Have them observe shapes, colors, textures, the position of people
and/or objects, etc.
2. Discuss your interpretation with the class, and be prepared to support your view by referring to specific elements of
the image and what you know about the history of the time.
