INTRODUCTION:
The volleyball serve is one of the basic volleyball techniques. A serve is used to put the
ball into play to start the volley.

The serve is the only skill controlled solely by one player. Advanced players take
advantage of this fact by developing their serving skills.

How tough players serve has a huge impact on whether or not the other team will return
the ball by attacking it or send over an easier ball to play such as a free ball. Therefore, a player
serve will dramatically affect the outcome of the volley and then of course the outcome of the
game. In serving the ball, it needs power and control.
DISCUSSION:
1. Types of Service in Volleyball
a. Underhand Serve- is a serve done below the waist level and is an easy serve to
recieve. Usually, this is the first type of serve taught for begineers in volleyball.

An underhand serve is a volleyball serve in which the ball is given a slight under-hand
toss from about waist high and then struck with a closed fist by the opposite hand.

b. Overhead Serve- refers to a serve which is done by tossing the ball high anf hitting it
with a wrist span.

c. Jump Serve- is an overhand serve where the player tosses the ball high and jumps high
and hits with much pace and topspin.

2. Youth Volleyball Terms
 Ace
- An ace serve is a serve that hits the floor or causes the passer to misplay the ball
such that the ball isn’t returnable.

 Friendly Fire
- Friendly fire is being hit in the head by a teammate's serve.

 Lollipop Serve
- A lollipop serve is a very soft serve, often served high over the net with just putting
the ball in play.

 Serving the Heat


- A server that serves the ball really hard is known as bringing the heat or bringing the
thunder.

3. Service Error
A service error is an unsuccessful serve in which one of the following occurs…

 The ball fails to clear the net


 The ball lands out of bounds or hits an object out of play or
 the volleyball server commits a foot fault or illegal contact of serve.

REFLECTIVE QUESTION
What are the benefits that we can get from engaging in one of the volleybal basic skills particularly in
service?

- Upon playing volleyball, there are a lot of benefits that we can get and improves our
physical and emotional state. Engaging in one of the basic skills of volleyball which is service
or serving, helps us improves our muscular system: which includes toning, building, and
strengthen our upper body, arms, shoulders, wrists, abdominals, core, and lower legs. As
well as, it improves our eye movement and hand coordination which is a must in any
activity in volleyball, specifically when serving to hit the ball precisely and with power
towards the opponents' court. Also, it improves our mental health the positive energy that
we can attain from volleyball can be carry over in any aspect of our life. In addition, playing
volleyball helps us develop and improve our self-confidence, flexibility, agility, speed, power,
alertness, concentration, balance, social interaction, and many more. Indeed, volleyball has
plenty of benefits that covered our physical and mental health far and beyond our
expectations.

ACTIVITY/ ASSESSMENT
Create a video/vlog showing the proper execution of service and digging skills of volleyball.

Instruction:
 Create a 3-5 minutes video/vlog regarding the Proper Mechanics of Underhand and Overhead
Serve.
 Wear proper attire and do warm-up and stretching before the activity.
 Upload your output in the Google Drive folder created by the assigned leaders. Do not forget to
rename your file according to the activity title.
