Science Experience 2

Theme or Topic: Exploring Magnets

Age: 4

Number of Students: 2

Content Standards:

• P.PK.3 - Explore what happens to objects in relation to other forces (e.g.,

magnets, gravity, and water).

Objectives:

Students will be able to

• Identify what items are attracted to a magnet.

• Demonstrate how objects can move with magnets.

New Awareness:

• Learning how some items are attracted to the magnet and some aren’t.

Materials:
Urrea 2

• Magnet wands or bar magnets, variety of magnetic items, non-magnetic

items, bin to separate the magnetic and non-magnetic items.

Activity:

To introduce my lesson, I will begin by asking my students a few questions such

as:

• Ask students what they already know about magnets.

• Explain to them the properties of magnets and how they are attracted to
metal.
• Demonstrate: Show them how some items will stick to the magnetic wand
and how some wont.
Students will then try on their own:
• Students will have time to play with the magnetic wand/bar and figure out
what items stick, and which ones don’t.

• Students will guess whether or not the items will be attracted to the
magnet or not.

• Students will place the magnetic items in the magnetic bin and non-
magnetic items in the non-magnetic bin.
What Happened:

• Some items stuck to the magnetic wand/bar while some didn’t and that is
because magnetism is an attraction that two items have making them stick
together.

What Next:

• I will do more activities relating to magnetism to make sure that students

fully understand the topic.
