geometric shape, color theory (mix tints and shades), scale, contrast, overlapping,
contours [NS 2.3.4]

2. Objectives:
SWBAT + Bloom’s verb

• SWBAT create an imaginary creature by making an inference using textual evidence.

• SWBAT mix primary colors to create secondary colors in an organic shape.

3. Materials/Equipment:

• Don’t Bump the Glump, blank copy paper, copy of poem, markers, crayons, colored
pencils, and watercolor paint.

4. Teaching:

A. Plan for reading the book:


• Before I read Don’t Bump the Glump,

B. Plan for extension activity:


• Students will pick a poem from the book that does not have a creature illustrated for it.
• Once students pick a poem, they will reread it and draw/paint their own version of the
fantastical creature.
• Students will creature their creature using watercolor just like Shel Silverstein did in the
ECE 260 – 3001 Urrea

book.
• When students are done, they will show to the class their creature and explain why they
think it looks like that using evidence from the text.

5. Closure:

• I will remind students of the importance of being able to use their imagination when
reading and how important it is to use the evidence from the text when doing so.
