Social/Emotional Observation

Observe daycare/home care setting/children in non-family member care and respond to the
following questions. This is an outline for your observation, be sure to use a given format
when submitting assignments and to observe the appropriate age group for this course. Give
specific examples of behavior in your responses. One example may NOT be used for multiple
responses. 5 points each except as noted.

ALL CHILDREN MUST BE BETWEEN THE AGES OF 0 - 2 1/2.

Part A (50 points)

Emotional

1a. Record an objective observation of a display of fear (include the exact age of child
and setting).

- Amelia, age 2 ½ is scared of her caregiver’s big dog because she got frantic when
Hazel (dog) was in the kitchen and she ran away from her making whining noises.

1b. How is this handled by the caregiver?

- Sheryl (caregiver) handled this fear by putting a gate in the kitchen so that she (Hazel)
wouldn’t go into the living room and “bother” the children.

1c. Was the response appropriate or inappropriate? Why or why not?

- Yes, Sheryl’s way of responding to Amelia’s fear of Hazel was appropriate because
now Amelia can play freely in the house without having to worry about Hazel scaring
her and so she accepted Amelia’s fear as valid.

2a. Record an objective observation of a display of anger (include the exact age of child
and setting).

- Alivia, age 2 would display anger when another child would take something away
from her.

2b. How is this handled by the caregiver?

- Sheryl would ask whichever child took the toy from Alivia, to give it back to her
because that is not nice to take away, and then she would suggest another toy for them
to play with.

2c. Was the response appropriate or inappropriate? Why or why not?

- Yes, I think Sheryl handled this very well and appropriately because she didn’t just
take the toy back from them she asked them to give it back to Alivia as she would like
them to do, and she even suggested other options for them to play with.

3a. Using the nine temperament traits, observe and give examples of EACH in ONE
child (you may need to interview the caregiver/parent to answer some). (Include exact
age of child and setting) (This portion is worth 10 points)

- I will be observing Alivia (2) at her caregiver’s house in their living room for this
portion.
1. Activity Level - Alivia likes to observe everything in her setting, she moves around
the entire living room and gets into almost everything that’s at her eye level.
2. Rhythmicity - Alivia has always been on a strict schedule and when there’s a change
in her normal routine she gets fussy. For example, she usually always takes a nap
around 12:30, and if she doesn’t take her nap she will begin to get whiney and
irritable.
3. Approach-withdrawal -
4. Adaptability - Alivia does not adjust quickly, for example, she still doesn’t like the
transition from leaving her mom to her going to her caregiver and she has been taken
care of by Sheryl since she was born. Another example would be when Alivia stayed
with my mother in Texas for a whole month without her mother and father, it took
Alivia about two weeks to be able to sleep normally without her mother.
5. Attention Span - Alivia doesn’t play with one object for a long time, she’ll play with
one toy for about a few minutes and then something else will easily catch her
attention.
6. Intensity of Reaction - Alivia is definitely one to be heard whether it’s her laughing,
crying, or talking.
7. Threshold of Responsiveness - Alivia is very aware of her surroundings, I was able
to observe her reaction when a light was turned on and how she turned her head
towards the light, or when a different sound approached the room her neck would
straighten and she would look around for the sound.
8. Distractibility - As noted above, Alivia’s attention can be very easy to get, therefore,
she can sometimes get distracted easily
9. Quality of Mood - Alivia is always in a giddy mood, and it takes very few things to
get her in a bad mood like a change in her schedule which is understandable.

3b. In which of the 3 temperament categories would you place this child and why?

- I feel Alivia can be placed in either the easy flexible category or the slow-to-warm
category. She would be placed in the easy flexible category because she is an easy
baby to take care of and is always in a happy mood, however, it does take time for her
to adjust to new people and that’s why I think she can also fall into the slow-to-warm
category.

3c. What advice might you give to the caregiver/parent of this child based on your
assessment?

- Alivia’s caregiver and parents are very aware of how she is so there isn’t any advice I
have to give to them, however, I did tell Alivia’s mother a few ago about how a
change in their schedule can stress them (Alivia and Amelia) out and she told me that
they were being a little fussy the night before and she thinks it was because they had
dinner later than usual and that lead them to going to bed later and she said it was
probably because they are not used to eating that late.

Part B

Social (30 points)

1. Record an objective observation of a child displaying Erikson’s “trust vs. mistrust”

(identify the exact age of the child and whether positive or negative).

- Amelia (2 ½ ) showed trust in Sheryl when she told her that she spilled her cup of
milk on the floor, I feel this demonstrated trust because Amelia told Sheryl about the
spilled milk even when it was something she may have thought she could get in
trouble for, thus it being positive.

2. Record an objective observation of a child displaying Erikson’s “Autonomy vs.

shame and doubt” (identify the exact age of the child and whether positive or negative).

- Amelia (2 ½ ) announces when she has to go potty so that Sheryl can help get up onto
the toilet, and this shows her working towards her independence and readiness in
using the bathroom (positive).

3a. Record an objective observation of a guidance situation between caregiver and child
(due to individual action). Give the exact age of the child.

- As noted above, when Amelia (2 ½ ) or Mason (1) would take a toy from Alivia (2),
Sheryl would ask them to give it back to her and she would show them the other toys
to play with.

3b. How is this handled by the caregiver? Was the response appropriate or
inappropriate? Why?
Urrea 4

- Sheryl handled this situation appropriately because I feel this was an example of her
guidance and discipline as she asked before taking the toy away demonstrating to
them how they should ask before they just take.

4a. Record an objective observation of a guidance situation between two children (due
to interaction between children). Give the exact age of children, both must be
appropriate age range for assignment.

- Amelia (2 ½ ) showed guidance towards Alivia (2) as she showed Alivia how her toy
cupcake maker worked.

4b. How is this handled by the caregiver? Was the response appropriate or
inappropriate? Why?
