Why do I want to be a teacher? My whole life I felt alone and felt like I was just traveling

through life, I never felt like I fit in or that I had anybody to go to if I needed help. I felt as if very

few teachers of mine cared or that they would not notice if I fell through the cracks. That’s

what I strive to be for my future students, the teacher who cares and notices when kids start to

fall a little bit, I want to be there to pick them back up and guide them where they need to go.

At the end of the school year when students make their final walk out of my classroom, I want

to be the teacher they look back on and still feel inspired when they’re in college and when

they are putting their children in school. I want to be the teacher to inspire my students to be

kind, loving and respectful to everyone. Growing up I was the mothering nurturing type and I’m

still that way even with my friends kids. I’m the fun loving aunt that doesn’t spoil them with

gifts I spoil them with experiences and knowledge because I’d rather invest my time and money

on an experience then some meaningless toy getting thrown in a box.

While I don’t understand everything about being a teacher and nor would I be ready to

teach a class tomorrow I’m willing to learn and adjust and adapt to the times as my time as

teacher will pass. I plan on not just teaching students with packets and worksheets but getting

them active with learning, the school and the community. Being a teacher is more than just

about needing to pass proficiency tests it’s about creating the next generation that is going to

lead us. You can’t just take a child and throw them into society and say here you go, good luck.

Our jobs as teachers is to help them build the stairs and take the climb with them until they’re

ready and can do it on their own and can enter society.

The thing I would value the most being an educator will be seeing the kids smiles first

thing in the morning and seeing the joy and happiness my classroom environment will hopefully

bring to their life. When I look back on my 13 years in grade school the one teacher that sticks

out was my English teacher in 11th grade and I was her student aide my senior year. She wasn’t

memorable because I had her two years, she was memorable because she actually cared about

her students and not about state test scores. We were more to her than just test scores and

assessments, we were students who needed her one way or another. An effective educator to

me doesn’t just put slideshows on a screen or movies on, they’re the educators who create

interactive lesson plans to help students who learn differently, because at the end of the day

people as a whole not just students, learn differently. I know I learn differently than my

coworkers and that’s okay. Educators serve as models in local communities in times of need like

right now, COVID-19 is a perfect example of how teachers serve in local communities by coming

together and adapting to changing circumstances. I plan on teaching my students to love

everybody no matter the color of their skin, the clothes on their back or disabilities. While I will

follow the rules given to me by the school district and school I plan on avoiding strict tests that

make or break a student’s progression to the next grade. I plan on giving children the building

blocks to succeed and that includes with tests. I don’t care how many times I have to stay after

to help a student, I won’t feel like I succeeded if a student barely passed my class because I’m

not setting them up for success in the next grade if there is still confusion.

My strengths as a future educator is, I am very persistent, and I don’t give up when I set

my mind to something. I want to be the educator that I would want my children to have. A

characteristic I may need to improve and develop is not being all go go go, that’s something I do

in my own life and something I need to fix in my own life. Especially because I plan on teaching

elementary school students, I need to learn to not be all go go go and let some things take their

own course. After I finish at CSN I will be attending UNLV to finish up my bachelors for

Elementary Education and in a few years after that will be pursuing my degree to become a

Secondary Education teacher in Math. And hopefully one day after I’ve settled down in life and

a spot where I want to live pursue the education and licensing to become a Vice Principal or

Principal. I’m willing to go as far as I can in this career field and impact as many lives as I can.
