General Information
STANDARDS
ON CD-ROM NACE Standards on CD-ROM were designed for use with Adobe Acrobat
Reader with Search 4.0™ or later. For maximum benefit, you should upgrade
any existing versions of Acrobat Reader™ to version 4.0 or later. You must
have the Search feature, which is an added component of Acrobat Reader,™
to properly use the index features.

NACE Standards also were designed for use on the Windows 95/98™ and
Macintosh™ platforms. Other platforms that are compatible with Adobe Acrobat
Reader™ may be used, but are not supported by NACE International.

Acrobat Reader 4.0 is not compatible with Windows™ 3.x platforms. To run
the NACE Standards using Windows™ 3.x, you must install Acrobat Reader™
3.0 or 3.01. Those versions can be downloaded from the Adobe home page
on the World Wide Web at http://www.adobe.com.

You may install Adobe Acrobat and the NACE Standards on your hard drive,
load only the Acrobat Reader software and read the NACE Standards from
the CD-ROM, or load only the NACE Standards. See the “Read Me” file for
installation instructions.

Setting Your Preferences

STANDARDS
ON CD-ROM After installing Acrobat Reader with Search,™ launch Acrobat Reader™ and set
your system preferences by selecting FILE from the menu bar > PREFERENCES
> GENERAL. Use the default Acrobat™ system preferences, with these ex-
ceptions:

■ Set Default Magnification at “Fit Page” or “Fit in Window.”

■ Set Default Layout at “Single Page.”

If you find the appearance of text is “fuzzy,” deselect the “Smooth Text and
Monochrome Images” setting.

If you experience difficulty in maneuvering between documents in different

files (if the page numbers reset to 1, you have switched files), deselect the
“Open Cross-Document Links in Same Window” setting.

Always select “Use Page Cache” and “Allow Background Downloading.”

You will need a CD-ROM drive and a minimum of 16 MG of RAM and 25 MG

of free hard disk space to make maximum use of this material. A Super VGA
monitor with at least 256 colors or better is recommended, although not
required.

Navigating
STANDARDS
ON CD-ROM There are several ways to maneuver within Adobe Acrobat™ and the NACE
Standards on CD-ROM.

■ Use the Acrobat™ toolbar at the top of the screen for almost any function.

■ Use the Bookmarks to the left of each page. If they do not appear by default,
select Window > Show Bookmarks. Click any Bookmark to go directly to that
item.

■ Use the Thumbnail page images to the left of each page. If they do not
appear by default, select Window > Show Thumbnails. Click any Thumbnail
page image to go directly to that item.

■ You can advance to a specific area on a specific page by using the Hand
tool to size the viewing area in the Thumbnail image.

For a complete description of the toolbar icons and other functions of Acrobat™
software, consult the Acrobat Guide (Help > Reader Guide).

Multi-Column Formats
STANDARDS
ON CD-ROM The NACE Standards on CD-ROM were designed to take maximum advantage
of the multi-column format of many NACE publications.

To make on-screen viewing easier, position the Hand pointer over the desired
column. You will notice an arrow in the palm of the Hand tool. Click once and
your screen will adjust to display one column of text at a time in higher
resolution. When you reach the end of a column, the arrow will disappear, and
you will be moved automatically to the top of the next column for continued
reading.

One mouse click will advance you to the next view. Shift + mouse click will
return you to the previous view. To change pages instead of columns, click
the Arrow tools on the far right border of your screen. One click advances one
page.

To exit the “Articles” viewing mode, click the desired “Fit Width” or “Fit Page”
icon at the top of your screen in the Acrobat™ toolbar.

Searching
STANDARDS
ON CD-ROM There are two ways to search documents in this collection: Acrobat Search™
and Acrobat Find.™

■ Acrobat Find™ (single binoculars with no pad behind it) will search
for any word only in the document you have opened.

■ Acrobat Search™ (binoculars with a notepad behind them) will search

all documents in the NACE Standards collection.

Acrobat Search™ will not function properly if any files are moved outside the
NACE directory in which they are installed. If files are moved individually, the
Search icon in the Acrobat™ toolbar will be grayed out, and the index search
feature will NOT be accessible.

However, the Find toolbar icon (black binoculars with no pad behind it) will
perform standard searches — match case, match whole word, find backwards
— within the document you are viewing. For example, if you are using RP0375,
the Find icon will search RP0375 only.

To search the entire database, select the Search icon in the toolbar or click
the “Search this CD-ROM” bookmark. This search will locate any documents
in this collection that contains your searched phrase.

General Description of NACE Standards

STANDARDS
ON CD-ROM Recommended Practices include recommended methods of selection, de-
sign, installation, maintenance, or operation of a material or system where
corrosion is a factor. In addition, some recommended practices focus on de-
tails of construction of a corrosion control system; methods of treating the
surface of materials to reduce corrosion; requirements for using devices to
reduce corrosion; and procedures for increasing the effectiveness, safety, and
economic benefits of an installation or system.

Test Methods are tests related to corrosion prevention and control. This type
of standard can give the method of conducting tests to ascertain the charac-
teristics of a material, design, or operation.

Material Requirements state the necessary characteristics of a material where

corrosion is a factor in the selection, application, and maintenance of the
material.

Numbering System for NACE Standards

STANDARDS
ON CD-ROM NACE International issues three classes of standards: Recommended
Practices (RP), Test Methods (TM), and Material Requirements (MR). The
alphanumeric designations for NACE International standards indicate the class
of standard, the number of the standard in its class for the year of publication,
and the year of publication.

The number immediately following the hyphen reflects the year of the most
recent revision or reaffirmation of that particular standard. For example,
RP0170-97 is the designation for the 1997 version of the first recommended
practice issued in 1970. RP0472-95 indicates the 1995 version of the fourth
recommended practice issued in 1972.

A reference appearing on the cover page of the published standard will explain
that this standard was revised in 1995 and the cover page will continue to
detail the full approval history of the document. Existing standards will be
modified accordingly as they are revised or reaffirmed.

How to Find a Standard

STANDARDS
ON CD-ROM If you are looking for a particular Material Requirement, for example, MR0274-95:
(1) Go to the MR (Material Requirements) section.
(2) Scan the headings of the pages and look for MRXX74-XX—these are
standards that were originally published in 1974. All of the 1974 MRs are
next to each other. (Sometimes there may be only one MR published in a
given year.)
(3) When you locate the MRs published in 1974, look for MR0274-95, which
will be between MR0174 and MR0175.

If you are looking for a Recommended Practice, for example, RP0475-98:

(1) Go to the RP (Recommended Practices) section.
(2) Scan the headings of the pages and look for RPXX75-XX—these are
standards that were originally published in 1975. All of the 1975 RPs are
next to each other.
(3) When you locate the RPs published in 1975, look for RP0475-98, which
will be between RP0375 and RP0575.
*NOTE: NACE/SSPC standards are found at the beginning of the RP section.

If you are looking for a Test Method, for example, TM0284-96:

(1) Go to the TM (Test Methods) section.
(2) Scan the headings of the pages and look for TMXX84-XX—these are
standards that were originally published in 1984. All of the 1984 TMs are
next to each other.
(3) When you locate the TMs published in 1984, look for TM0284-96, which
will be between TM0184 and TM0384.
