CO2 CALCULATIONS
Made by Date Chd.

The CO2 Total Flooding System for this project is designed based on NFPA 12 - Standard on Carbon Dioxide
Extinguishing Systems; 1989 Edition. All items in "[ ]" within these sheets are references from this standard.

AREA : H.V Switch room

a: CO2 Capacity

Volume = 4.5 m x 4.5 m x 3.66 m (H)

= 74.12 m3

Based on values from [Table 2-4.2.1] for Dry Electrical Hazards,

Design Concentration = 50 %

Flooding (Volume) Factor = 1.6 kg CO2 / m3

Material Conversion Factor = N/A

Basic Capacity of CO2 Required = 74.12 m3 x 1.6 kg CO2 / m3

= 118.58 kg

Safety Factor = 10 %

Total Capacity of CO2 = 130.44 kg

Capacity of each CO2 Cylinder = 45 kg

Quantity of CO2 Cylinders Required = 3 nos.

Total Capacity of CO2 Allowed = 135 kg

b: Pipe Sizing

Valve discharge outlet size , do = 12.7 mm dia.

Therefore;
Area of valve outlet, p x do2/4 = 127 mm2

Total area of 3 nos. of discharge outlets

= 127 mm2 x 3
= 381 mm2

Area of header , p x D2/4 = Total area of 3 nos. of discharge outlets

= 381 mm2

D = 22.03 mm

Therefore,
Diameter of header = 25 mm Sch. 80 pipe.

The CO2 gas is discharged through 2 nos. of nozzles,

thus the range pipes are estimated as follows :

Total area of gas discharge nozzle = 381 mm2

Area of each gas discharge nozzle = 381 mm2 / 2
= 190.5 mm2

Hence,
p x dn2/4 = 190.5 mm2
dn = 15.57 mm

Therefore,
Diameter of the range pi = 19 mm Sch. 40 pipe.
c: Nozzle Orifice Size

Based on values from [Table 1-9.4.4(c)], for Cylinder Pressure of 725 psia at 20oC,
Discharge Rate per square inch of Equivalent Orifice Area = 2.706 kg / min / mm2

Quantity of CO2 = 135 kg

Since the Design Concentration for Dry Electrical Hazards is always 50 % (Refer [Table 2-4.2.1]),
the Rate of Application required to achieve 30 % Design Concentration in 2 minutes is always
higher than achieving 50 % in 7 minutes - Refer Note [2-5.2.3].

Therefore,
Rate of Application = 30% x 135 kg / 2 minutes
= 20.25 kg / min

Equivalent Orifice Area = 20.25 kg/min / 2.706 kg/min/mm2

= 7.48 mm2

Since there are 2 nos. of nozzle provided,

Equivalent Single Orifice Area = 7.48 mm2 / 2

= 3.74 mm2

Closest standard equivalent single orifice area = 4.45 mm2

Hence, Discharge Nozzle information derived from [Table 1-9.4.4(a)] as follows :

No. of Discharge Nozzles = 2

Orifice Code No. = 3

Equivalent Single Orifice Diameter = 3/32 inches

Actual Time for CO2 Discharge = 5.61 minutes

b: Pipe Sizing

Valve discharge outlet size , do = 12.7 mm dia.

Therefore;
Area of valve outlet, p x do2/4 = 127 mm2

Total area of 6 nos. of discharge outlets

= 127 mm2 x 6
= 762 mm2

Area of header , p x D2/4 = Total area of 6 nos. of discharge outlets

c: Nozzle Orifice Size

Based on values from [Table 1-9.4.4(c)], for Cylinder Pressure of 725 psia at 20oC,
Discharge Rate per square inch of Equivalent Orifice Area = 2.706 kg / min / mm2

the Rate of Application required to achieve 30 % Design Concentration in 2 minutes is always
higher than achieving 50 % in 7 minutes - Refer Note [2-5.2.3].

Therefore,
Rate of Application = 30% x 270 kg / 2 minutes
= 40.5 kg / min

Equivalent Orifice Area = 40.5 kg/min / 2.706 kg/min/mm2

= 14.97 mm2

Since there are 4 nos. of nozzle provided,

Design Concentration = 50 %

Flooding (Volume) Factor = 1.6 kg CO2 / m3

Material Conversion Factor = N/A

Basic Capacity of CO2 Required = 131.62 m3 x 1.6 kg CO2 / m3

= 210.59 kg

Safety Factor = 10 %

Total Capacity of CO2 = 231.65 kg

Capacity of each CO2 Cylinder = 45 kg

Quantity of CO2 Cylinders Required = 6 nos.

Total Capacity of CO2 Allowed = 270 kg

b: Pipe Sizing
