Subject : Fire Fighting System

1.0 INTRODUCTION

Kilang Isi Sawit Pandamaran own by Felda Kernel Products Sdn. Bhd. is an existing istallation. This application is
for as built plan and for Fire Certification.

2.0 FIRE FIGHTING SYSTEM

2.1 HYDRANT & HOSE REEL WATER TANK

Fire fighting system water supply should be complying to MS 1489 Part 1

2.1.1 Water tank design

Hydrant storage requirement : 180,000 liter
Hose Reel Storage requirement : 10,000 liter
Total storage required : 190,000 liter

Type : Hot Dipped Galvanized Press Steel

Size : 7.2(l) x 6(w) x 4.8(h) meter
Capacity : 207,000 liter

2.2 PUMP SIZE

Pump sizing is calculated after considering both system of fire hydrant and hose reel complying to
MS 1489 Part 1

2.2.1 Fire hydrant system hydraulic calculation

Each fire hydrant with twin outlet pillar outlets is to discharge a minimum of 1000 l/min of water. Three
hydrants is assumed to operate at one time. Therefore, pump capacity usually sized to deliver a flow rate
of 3000 l/min. Sample calculation as follow.

Assumed fire hydrant(s) operated at one time = 3 no(s).

Total Fire hydrant = 5 no(s).
Furthest pipe's length Ø150mm = 130 m
= 426.40 ft

Total elbows and bends = 10

Gate valve nos = 2
Swing check valve = 1
Flow rate, Q = 660.00 IGPM
= 3000 l/min

Pipe used, MSCL; 150 mm dia ≈ 6 in

1.85 1.85 4.8655
A) Head Loss Due to Friction, hf = 0.002083 L (100/C) x (gpm /d )

hf = head loss in feet of water

L = length of pipe in feet
C = friction coefficient
gpm = gallons per minute (USA gallons not imperial gallons)
d = inside diameter of the pipe in inches

Based on NFPA 14 - Table 5-10.2 (b) Hazen-Williams C value, C = 140

1.00 igpm = 1.20095042 USA gallons per min

660.00 igpm = 792.63 USA gallons per min

Thus, h1 = 0.002083 L (100/C)1.85 x (gpm1.85/d4.8655)

Total = 178.00 ft

Thus, h2 = 0.002083 L (100/C)1.85 x (gpm1.85/d4.8655)

= 0.15 ft head

C) Static Head h3 = 3.00 m

= 9.84 ft head

D) Head Loss Through fire hydrant Tubing

For 100ft Ø 2 1/2" fire hydrant hose = 0.68 ft head
for 3 furthest hose = 3 x 0.68 ft head
h4 = 2.04 ft head

E) Minimum Bomba h5 = 135.00 ft head @ 4 bar

Requirement

Total Head Loss = h1 + h2 + h3 + h4 + h5

= 165 ft head
= 50 m head

2.2.2 Hose reel system hydraullic calculation

Each hose reel outlet is to discharge a minimum of 30 l/min of water. Four hose reel is assumed to
operate at one time. Therefore, pump capacity usually sized to deliver a flow rate of 120 l/min. Sample
calculation as follow.

Assumed Hose Reel(s) operated at one time = 4 no(s).

Total Hose reel = 21 no(s).
Total pipe's length Ø50mm = 50.00 m
= 164.04 ft
≈ 180.45 ft (+ 10% SF)

Total elbows and bends = 10

Gate valve nos = 2
Swing check valve = 1
Flow rate, Q = 30.00 IGPM
= 136.36 l/m

Pipe used, GI Class B&C; 50 mm dia ≈ 2 in
