TELLING THE TIME

A. Introduction

Dalam pelajaran ini anda diharapkan mampu menanyakan dan memberi informasi tentang

jam asking for and telling the time. Topik ini sangat lazim digunakan dalam percakapan

sehari-hari.

Untuk mampu melakukan hal diatas, maka pada pembahasan ini anda akan belajar dan

berlatih menggunakan kosa kata dan ungkapan yang berhubungan dengan bagaimana cara

menceritakan tentang waktu. Ungkapan dan kosa kata yang dimaksud adalah seperti

bagaimana menggunakan ekspresi yang menanyakan tentang waktu dan cara-cara

menanyakan waktu baik cara Amerika (American style) maupun cara british (British style)

B. Presentation

Read and practice the following conversation

Dialogue 1. Asking and telling the time

Mr. Hunt : Here’s the Bank. When does it close?

Mrs. Hunt : it closes at half past three (3.30). some banks don’t close until six o’clock

  On Thursday, but not this bank. Now look for foreign exchange counter

Mr. Hunt : These are the paying-in counters. Is that the foreign exchange counter?

Mrs. Hunt : No, it isn’t. That’s enquiry. This is the foreign exchange counter. Change

  Your Swiss money first

Mr. Hunt : I can’t exchange my money

Mrs. Hunt : Yes you can

Mr. Hunt : No, I can’t

Mrs. Hunt : Why not?


Mr. Hunt : Because I haven’t got it. It’s in my blue hand bag. There’s nothing in this

  handbag

Mrs. Hunt : Oh, sarah. We can’t go back to the hotel again. It’s late, but don’t worry.

Dialogue 2. Asking and telling the time

Andi : Excuse me, what time is it?

Jane : It’s half past seven

Andi : Thanks, the bus should be here right now

Jane : Oh, sorry. It’s not exactly a half past seven, it’s seven twenty

Andi : Oh thank God. I thought I missed the bus

Dialogue 3. Asking and telling the time

Toni  : Have you got the time, please?

Frida : My watch says three to ten

Prima  : Three to ten? But my watch says five minute past ten

Toni  : So, which one is right?

Frida : Hey listen! That’s the ten o’clock news

Toni  : Yes, that’s right/ so, your watch is slow, Frida. And yours is fast, Prima

Prima  : All right. Let’s watch the news and set our watches correctly.

Questions:

3.  What time was the news?

4.  What will next Frida and Prima do?

Bill : What time is it?

Jack  : Let me see first. It’s about ten to nine by my watch


Bill : Is your watch correct?

Jack  : Yes, of course. My watch is always correct

Bill : Oh my God. I am late. I have to go to school

Jack  : what’s up with you, Bill? It’s Sunday

Languge focus

To ask about the time at the moment, you say:

Excuse me, what time is it?

Excuse me, can you tell me the time?

Excuse me, have you got the time?

To answer the questions above, you say:

It’s ten o’clock

My watch says ten o’clock

The time is 10 o’clock

It’s half past six

To ask about the time of a show or program, you say:

Excuse me, what time is the news?

Excuse me, what time is the music program?

Excuse me, what time is the boxing championship?

To answer the questions, you say:

It’s ten o’clock

The time is 10 o’clock

It’s half past six

Untuk menyatakan waktu dalam bahasa Inggris terdapat dua versi yaitu
- American version, and

- British version

Kedua versi tersebut (American and British) dalam penggunaannya sama-sama

menggunakan o’clock

Untuk menyatakan waktu pecahan, dalam American version terlebih dahulu menyebutkan

dalam jam, kemudian waktu dalam menit, tanpa tambahan kata minute dan o’clock.

Sebaliknya dalam British version, terlebih dahulu disebutkan waktu dalam menit, kemudian

waktu dalam jam.
