While reading the Chapters on the theories I realized that I can apply all the theories that I was

given to my counseling style. Although this is the case one theory in particular stood out.

(Reality Therapy) I also realize that the potential effectiveness is likely to be squelched unless

the counselor is successful in building a strong therapeutic relationship with the client. I choose

Reality Therapy because as the therapy ideas about the social context of human behavior

(Wubbolding, 2010).

It is based on Choice Theory, which focuses on the power of individuals to control their

behaviors. This is my belief, I believe that the pass is in the pass and the only how an individual

can be a better person or make a difference in their life, is for them to think about the present and

what their can do to make their future better or what their can do to not make the same mistakes

of the past. This therapy also matches my personality on everything. I choose this theory because

as stated in Peterson, 2000; Wubbolding, 2010). Reality Therapy promotes individual

responsibility for actions while helping clients make decisions that are in line with the visions

they have for their lives.

I believe That having an unconditional positive regard for others is sometimes enough in the

counseling field and Reality therapy views behavior as a choice. It’s based on taking

responsibility for these choices and choosing more effective actions.

While reading this theory I was surprised how much Reality theory were relatable to my way of

thinking and forming bonds and relationship with others. This theory serves as a realty guard, so

as a counselor I would try to help my client understand that their behavior is not helping them to

achieve their goals while aiding them in acquiring various choices that would be an asset rather

than a liability. Although as counselors we are not allowed to portrayed our personal biases on

situations affecting our clients, I believe one of the reasons this theory fits me is because I never

criticize and put blame on others or compare myself or my life to anything and anyone so I

believe that I am a realist. Having that frame of mind would help me to help my clients

understand that although we cannot change the past we can do better in the right now so we can

alter the future for ourselves.

While not all aspects of life are within our power to change, human beings are always faced with

opportunities to respond either rationally or responsibly—or the opposite thereof (Peterson,

2000).  My choice of this theory was somewhat personal because I know this Therapy would

assist clients in a more conventional approach to obtain tremendous control over their lives while

improving their potential to create significant and beneficial relationships. It is applicable to me

because it is present-day, non-symptom-focused approach in which as a counselor I can takes on

a friendly, positive, and nonjudgmental stance.
