School Counselor
0:03-0:25
(Beginning) In order to make the student comfortable in the session the School
Counselor in training introduced herself and discussed the
confidentiality process and informed the student that the recording
was for grading purposes. The counselor also stated that the
student was referred by the student's mother.
The school counselor hoped that the student would become
comfortable and express her feelings and thoughts more freely
given the aforementioned. During the session, the counselor
displayed great listening skills and used silence where it is
appropriate.

School Counselor
4:20-4:25
(Middle) Reflection and paraphrasing are essential components of effective
counseling, school counselors use with students.
Counselors use these strategies by giving them their full attention.
The school counselor tried to make sense of what the student was
saying and tried to compare the data they observed to make a
relatable response and create an intervention. The counselor used
paraphrases by summarizing the responses of the student. The
counselor praised the student for trying, despite challenges of
remote learning. Praising helps build confidence, and reinforces
that the counselor is listening. The counselor also helped student
pinpoint issues, by employing focusing.

School Counselor
8:10-9:05
(Conclusion): The counselor terminated the session by summarizing the
issues that were affecting the student. The counselor highlighted
the main message; getting the most out of remote learning.
Additionally, the counselor took the time to process what was said
in the session. The counselor ended the session by giving the
student a summary of next steps. The counselor made it clear to the
student that the counselor would keep in touch and continue to
reach out to the student and student’s mother. According to the
ACA code of ethics: termination should be the among the first
topics that a counselor and their client discuss.
0:03 Kira: “So I have to start off by saying anything that we say
here is for grading purposes, for my professor and my
classmates your name would not be shared.. Nobody's going to see
everything you say here is confidential. Okay, and I have your
mom permission to counsel you. So is it okay?”

0:10 J: “Yes.”

0:20 Kira: “Okay.”

0:25 Kira: “Your mom referred you to me

because she said you were having problems dealing with remote
learning and understanding exactly what is being taught. So tell me
more about that.”

0:31 J: “So for starters, remote learning is kind of hard because

sometimes when I go on there, I get disconnected. So when I got
back into the class, I didn't know what they're talking about,
because they were all talking and I asked, but no one answered.”

1:01 J: “So I just see if I can find my work, but I see it but I don't know
what to do because there is no direction.”

1:05 Kira: “Okay! So is there any point that you’ll speak to the teacher
about it?”

1:10 J: “Yes, I write, there's a chat box. So I write in the chat saying,
um, what are we supposed to do or what are we doing?”

1:25 J: “But then…”

1:31 J: “Sometimes they answer but sometimes they will ask me if my

computer got disconnected from the class. So then I will answer
yes, then they will catch me up on what we're learning. But other
times, I understand because they're busy with the other classmates
trying t/o focus on more people other than me because it's more
people.”

2:10 J: “In the class, I understand that, so they won't really have the
time to answer my question.”

2:25 Kira: “Okay. So what I'm hearing is that you're trying to say that even
w?hen the internet is disconnected and even when you don't
understand you reach out to the teacher through the Chat box”

2:31 Kira: “Responds to you so at least if you get disconnected You can
get caught up on the stuff that you're doing.”

2:45 Kira: “Yeah. Okay, so that's good at least you are trying.”

2:50 J: “Yes.”

2:56 Kira: “Okay. Another thing I want to discuss is the assignment and
stuff, tell me more about the assignments, how are you able to do
the assignments the teachers put online. Are you good with
the assignments or are you having problems?”

2:59 J: “When we first started I was having problems, but because the...

3:01 J: after pausing J continued “the response box for the assignment that
I was writing in was hard for me to write because sometimes it's
not enough space, or sometimes it's just difficult because I can't
change the colors that I can write in so I know what the important
parts are and what I'm supposed to write about but now I have an
app that my teacher told the whole class.”

3:31 J: After, hesitations continued, “to download it is an app. I think it's

an app where you can write your work and it is called Kami. So
my work is very easy now because I can change the colors. I can
use a whole bunch of shapes I can use, things where we can just
put our work in order. So it will be easier to do our work.”

4:20 Kira: “Okay. So what I'm hearing is that you're making this work for
you. So even if it's hard, resources are given to you, to help you
understand your work better and to help you put your work
in order, so that's good. So tell me one thing you find hard to do
online.”

4:25 J: “Sometimes it is hard for me to find my classes...”

4:31 J: J continued “because when I'm looking for my classes, the teachers
will say that they posted it, but it's not really posted. So every time
I have to keep searching and when I finish searching everything I
have to do it again because I don't see it. And yeah, it's just my
classes.”

4:35 Kira: “So is it getting better or are you reaching out to your teacher or
you have someone at home to help you?”

4:40 J: “I have someone at home to help me.”

4:45 Kira: “Yeah.”

4:59 J: “Yeah.”

5:01 Kira, “So, I'm hearing that remote learning is hard for you. But at least
you're getting help from the teachers.”

5:10 J: “Yeah.”

5:25 Kira: counselor continued, “parents and you’re getting help from
whoever is at your house, that's good. So what do you think would
be the best thing for you right now? Like remote wise? Also your
mom said that she is sending you back to school. How do you feel
about that?”

5:32 J: “I think it is good actually because then I won’t really be that

distracted, while I'm in school since remote learning is hard for me,
I sometimes don't know where to look for my assignments. But
when I am at school, I can write on a sheet of paper so I
get a pencil and just write on it. So it's much easier. I can see and
hear the teachers, I can hear the teachers talking without the
internet lagging or me getting disconnected.”

5:55 Kira “So I hear you're saying that you're distracted, which exactly
distracts you when you’re at home learning remotely.”

6:26 J: Following some consideration,“sometimes my baby brother

because he's really noisy and sometimes I just have to go to my
room to do my work because it’s kind of easier because I don't
hear the noise and it is not only my baby brother, my dad he is
always cooking a lot.”

6:55 J: “I hear everything getting fried and cooked, so it's really hard
and I am like in the kitchen sitting to do my work, I mean that’s
where I usually sit so it is really hot.”

7:20 Kira: “So you think going back to school is going to help solve all
these issues and at least you are not going to be as distracted as
when you're home.”

7:21Kira: “Your mom said it's only two days, so at least you could get to
see your friends for two days and interact with others for two days.
And then the other three days you’re going to be at home.”

7: 25 Kira: “Home chilling on your bed looking at your television, just

getting up and just looking at your computer. So that's fine.”

7:27 J: “Yeah”

7: 30 Kira: “That's good. So are you looking forward to going back to

school?”

7:32 J: “Yeah”

7: 37 Kira: “you excited?”

7:40 J: “I'm excited.”

7:45 Kira: “Yeah, what are you most excited about?”

7:49 Kira: “I think I'm most excited about seeing my teachers again and
seeing my friends.”

7:52 Kira: “So that's good, that is something to look forward to.”

8:02 “So at least you solve one problem, at least when you go back
to school you're not going to be as distracted as you are when
you're at home?”

8:04 J: “Yeah,”
8:10 Kira: “You also said that one of the problems was that you were
having internet troubles. So it was hard for you to focus because
the internet would turn off and you will not know where exactly
you were in class. Right?”

8:31 Kira: “so at least something is going to be solved when you go back
to school. Okay, so I'm going to keep in touch with your mom. I'm
going to call and see how you're doing and I am going to make
sure that I call you to check in to make sure everything is
okay. I'm going to keep in touch and if anything that you want to
talk about, if you have a problem with your work, maybe I could
help you but not “Math”. just reach out. Okay, and don't.”

9:01 Kira: “Be afraid and I know you are Taking Chances meaning that
you're going back to school even when you know, you know
everything else is happening.”

9:05 J: “Yeah, so that's good. So, thank you very much.”
