7A WHAT IS SERICULTURE?? • Sericulture, the production of raw silk by means of raising caterpillars (larvae) to produce silk • Mainly four types of silk have been recognised which are secreted by different species of silk worms. • (i) Mulberry Silk • (ii) Tasar Silk • (iii) Eri Silk • (iv) Munga Silk Tasar silk moth Mulberry silk moth

HISTORY • Mulberry silk has its history in China, where local farmers grow Mulberry trees and harvest the leaves for silkworms to feed on. The resulting cocoons are spun into raw silk fibers. • Eri silk has a history from Assam. The name "eri" is derived from the Assamese word "era", which means "castor", as the silkworm feeds on castor plants. HISTORY • Munga silk also has a history from Assam.It is obtained from semi- domesticated silkworm that feed on the leaves of Som plants and the silk produced from them is known for its glossy texture and durability. • Tasar silk shares its history from encient times. It was originally called kosa silk in Sanskrit.Biggest amount of tussar silk is being produced in Jharkhand STEPS FOR SILK PRODUCTION • After the silk worm spun their cocoon following steps are followed- • THREAD EXTRACTION- cocoons are boiled and silk thread is reeled • DYEING – natural colour of silk thread is generally yellow or golden in colour . It is dyeid in various colours later • SPINNING – after this they are spun on looms into yarns • WEAVING – lastly they are made into fabrics by weaving • There are many items prepared from silk – shirt , ties, saress etc SILK PRODUCTION IN UTTARAKHAND • In Uttarakhand all 4 kinds of silk are produced • The silk department was estabilished in 2001 in Uttarakhand • April , may september and octuber are best suitable months for the production of mulberry and oak tasar silk because of the avaiblity of natural grown plants , cocoons and mulberry trees • Silk production has also provided emplyment in rural parts of Uttarakhand
