BUSINESS COMMINICATION INDIVIDUAL ASSIGNMENT

Part One:

1. Eastern Ontario is transforming its agriculture and supplying structure. The change was
seen in 20th Century where the region got more dependent on specialized farming and
importing the food products rather than producing them in their region which was used
for the consumption in domestic markets and for exports.

2. It is becoming increasingly popular among the leading companies who are attracting
consumer to place their order online and collecting those products thereafter instead of
transporting them at buyer’s address.

3. Over the period of last 10 years, professionalized people with high qualifications and
scientific knowledge were given Canadian permanent residency. However, in last few
years immigration structure has tightened further; dedicating itself towards approving the
applications of the employees required in labour intensive industries.

In-text citation:

1. The authors explain that, “Soft skills are ability to work with people, your ability to
manage yourself, time and emotions, conflict resolutions, presentation skills, a whole pile
of skills”(Jetelina referred Laroche,2012,para.15).

2. Jetalina highlights why immigrants have difficulty getting job in Canada; the main reason
is, “A large number of new immigrants find many challenges when it comes to finding
employment. And once they go through the interview process, they are often informed
that they do not have Canadian work experience. What the employer often is telling them
indirectly is that they are lacking in ‘soft skills’”, (Gill, 2012, para.8).

Part Two:

1. In South and east tip of Canadian Shield the agricultural land is mainly used for cash
crops cultivation of corn and soy, with dairying and calf cow operations which are
considered important procedures for animal rearing. On the troublesome area of Canadian
Shield, the agriculture is more scattered and varied which comprises of maple syrup
cultivation, Sheep ranching, and horticulture on the rich soil.

2. In the early part of 20th century the focus was on producing the local food for local
market and was exporting the food to other region as well. For example, Milk, butter and
beef were being exported to metropolis of Toronto from the territory of Peterborough and
Victoria. While, in later 20th century the focus shifted to more of specialized cultivation
and gap was increased between the farms and marketplace. The farming was
concentrated towards dairy, half cow operations, egg production and production of cash
crops like corn and soy which provides raw material to cattle industries.

3. Due to local food movement the direct sales was growing but the sales figures were not
same for all the food products as in case of local grain which is used in production of
flour and pasta, their demand didn’t increase to the extend as compared to the growing
demand and sales figures of local vegetables, berries, beef, pork and chicken, wines,
organic food and halal food. Thus, as stated by author all foods were not equally
celebrated in the local food movement.

5. In order to meet the demands of the local food producers and consumers, it is recognized
that the key is Food hubs. These regional channels, although different in operation, meet
the demands of the local producers who want to increase their reach as well as the
consumers who want more variety in their local food markets.

Part Three:

1. Some immigrants have difficulty getting jobs in Canada because they lack professional
competencies and Canadian experience as demanded by the Canadian employers.

2. New admission policies are putting more emphasis on accepting younger permanent
residents, who have better language skills, and have studied or worked in Canada
previously; therefore, they will possess more language and soft skills than what will
actually be required by their employer.

3. Many immigrants possess excellent technical skills; however, they possess low
professional aptitude as compared to the Canadian people.

4. Although the relative weight from technical to soft skills is about 90 to 10 in many
immigrants' home countries, both technical and soft skills have equal weightage in the
Canadian labor market.

5. Carefully chosen defaults can help people make choices that are better for themselves and
for society. For Example, Walt Disney World changed its kids’ meal menu by keeping
the default option of juice instead of soda and fruits &vegetable instead of French fries
which resulted in 21% less intake of calories, 44% less fat and reduction in intake of
sodium by 43%.

6. Since defaults can also be used to help businesses profit from consumers, it at times
motivates people to select the options which are not advantageous for them.

7. Even though disclosure didn’t end up influencing people’s decisions, it changed the
perception of people towards the default and the default setter.

8. It is hard to describe the meaning of local food; in fact it can be denoted by people in
different manner which may result in conflicting situations.

9. The local food movement is majorly influenced by market; therefore, the policy makers
should take into account the means by which public funding should be divided between
new regional for-profit food distributors and the non-profits or mixed structures keeping
in mind the nitty-gritty involved.

10. Consumers are interested in locally produce beef and dairy products yet multinational
distributors can only supply that much that is allowed by their distribution systems and
the federal policies.
