Subject: Summary of “Technology firms and the offices of the future”

The following memo is the synopsis of an article entitled, “Technology firms and the offices of
the future” by Economist writer, published in The Economist on April 29, 2017.

In this article author explains the way technology firms are designing their offices with a motive
to provide their employees not just a place to work but where they can enjoy other amenities
which demonstrates company’s brand image to their employees and attract best talent out of the
pool who can work efficiently in innovative and productive environment.

The concept behind transformation is that employees are work around at different workplace
rather than sitting and working at fixed work station. Employees can sit together in teams in
coffee shops, libraries, cafés and work together which will lead to generation of new ideas and
effective team participation. This new idea is liked by young workers, but elderly employees find
it difficult to concentrate on work because of frequent movement around the office.

Some technology companies are introducing new technology like facial recognition, tracking
devices for each employee, putting sensors in the desk and chairs in order to monitor when
worker is at their work station so that if in case the room is vacant the lights can be turn off or
space can be located for holding some meetings. Companies might be doing it for some good
cause, but this data would also hinder the privacy of the employees.

Not only this but some companies also have entertainment area for their employees like silent
disco where people dance by playing songs on headphones. Some companies also provide on-site
health care facilities at workplace. These offices not only influence employee to choose a
company or n an employer for themselves but they choose the way of life for themselves.

In the end the author concluded that although these all changes of structuring and creative work
environment is been adopted by technology firms as of now and other companies are waiting for
the outcomes of these changes on the productivity of the firms, there is a chance that employees
may not be happy using these facilities on the cost of disruption in their privacy.
