Abstract

The theoretical knowledge gained during four year time was used in practical
way in this project entitled as “Structural Analysis and Seismic-Resistant
Design of Multi-Storied Community Building”. The most important thing
that we have addressed is the seismic resistance of building along with its
structural stability.

Nepal is a hotspot for earthquake. The entire country falls in a high earthquake
intensity belt. Recently Nepal faced huge earthquake of 7.8 Richter scale, 74km
west from capital city Kathmandu that killed thousands of people and causing the
huge loss of property. The unplanned urbanization and unregulated building by-
laws by the related government offices in Nepal has lead citizens to build
unregulated and illegal structures in the city. The use of reinforced concrete as a
constructional material, for building shelters has increased significantly in last few
decades. It is a responsibility of a young engineers to combat any circumstances
that appear in his professional market. This makes us to select the mentioned
project. This project makes us enable how to analyze the field problems and how it
converges to a reasonable solution and also refreshes us about the design of
structural members along with seismic resistance methods for high risk buildings.
Analysis works are done using ETABs as analytical tool. Meanwhile MS-Excel
and MS-Word is used for general calculations and report preparation.

The entire design works is based upon IS code and ruled upon by the Limit
State Design Philosophy; however capacity approaches are also adopted in
required sections. Necessary Architectural drawing is drafted using AutoCAD
software. The results of calculations are presented in tabular form and sample
calculations are provided in detail to reduce bulkiness of the report. Sufficient
figures and sketches have been introduced to illustrate the theories.
References to the appropriate clauses of standard codes of practice have been
made wherever necessary.

CHAPTER 1

1. INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background
1.1.1 General Background
Development of infrastructures has taken the world into the next level. The
development of the human civilization started from the Stone Age but today the
world has been transformed into a concrete jungle. The development of high-rise
buildings, complexes, apartments, etc. has taken place in every nook and corners of
the world whether it is the land of deserts or the world of seismic hazards. Nepal,
being a small country is also following the trend in the development of high-rise
structures. We belong to a developing nation with wide spectrum of fortune knocking
a footstep away. With the economic growth induced by the service sector and foreign
remittance, rapid urbanization is taking place. Urban population growth is
accelerating day by day. With the blooming dawn of economic enhancement and
rapid growth in living and earning cuboidal state. On the other hand, Nepal lies in the
convergent plate boundary between two active tectonic plates namely Eurasian plate
and Indian plate. Every year Indian plate slides beneath the Eurasian plate at the rate
of about 3cm.
Consequently, the Himalaya including Nepal has become seismically very active.

1.1.2 Specific Background

From various studies and tests, we are now able to predict the behavior of a structure
during seismic activity as well. We are acknowledged with various factors that
influence the safety and stability of structure. So, it is now necessary to introduce
these parameters into the design. Structural Analysis i.e. idealization of structural
elements and determination of internal forces in the members of the structures must be
carried out. Unless the proper structural designing method is adopted the construction
work, is not worthy.
In addition to this, Earthquake is one of the dominant constraints that highlight the
need of engineering analysis and design of building. For the country like Nepal, which

11 | P a g e
is seismically active area, it is even more necessary to pay attention while constructing
a building. Coming up to this era, a lot of design basis has been introduced to increase
the performance of building in terms of safety, service and strength. So, for every
engineering student, it is required to achieve a good knowledge on the analysis and
design procedure of a building before using new technologies.

Like residential buildings and high rise buildings, community building also should be
earthquake resistant. The analysis and design of community building is also equally
important. This project is undertaken to analyze and design a multi-storied seismic
resistant community building.

1.2 Statement of Problem

We are getting involved in a project entitled “Structural Analysis and Seismic-
Resistant Design of Multi-Storied Community Building”. In due course of our
project, we are mainly dealing with analysis and structural design of RCC framed
structure including the consideration of earthquake loads to obtain design output by
limit state method on the basis of structural design incorporating seismic
considerations. The population is growing rapidly day by day and with the
decentralization of governmental administration, the use of community building is
increasing day by day. So it has become to the necessity of constructing community
building with more seismic resistance properties. Further, the prevalence of seismic
hazard has brought the requirement of replacement of traditional methods of
construction with scientific methods of RCC design along with new technologies for
seismic activity preservation.

1.3 Objectives

The primary objective of the project is to perform the analysis and design a
Community RCC building which is resistant to probable seismic loading with
following specific objectives:

12 | P a g e
• Preliminary design of structural component and modeling of the building
for structural analysis.
• Structural analysis and detailing of the structural elements in accordance to
IS 456:2000, IS 1893:2000, IS 13920:1993, etc.
• Analysis and design of Combined and Isolated Footing
• To accomplish the structural analysis of Community building in ETABS
software.
• Design of building with consideration of earthquake loads.
• To accomplish the structural analysis of building with seismic loads in
ETABS software.
• To accomplish the Detailing and detail drawing using AutoCAD software.

1.4 Scope of Study

To achieve above objectives, scope of study are as follows:

• Preliminary design for geometry of structural elements

• Estimation of loads including those due to earthquake
• Calculation of base shear and vertical distribution of equivalent
earthquake load.
• Modelling of building to undertake the vertical, horizontal loads
• Identification of load cases and load combination cases
• Determination of shape and size of structural components.
• The structural analysis of the building by ETABS for different cases of
loads.
• Review of analysis outputs for design of individual components
• Design of RC frame members, walls, staircase, and other by limit state
method of design
• Detailing of individual members using IS ductile detailing code of
practice and preparation of drawings as a part of working construction
document

13 | P a g e
1.5 Assumptions

During design procedure, all the available values and data aren’t determined by
considering every possible influencing factor, so it is necessary to make certain
assumptions:
• Design is based on Limit State Method in which loading is not allowed to
exceed the limit state of collapse and serviceability
• M25 refers to strength of concrete in MPa obtained after 28 days of curing
• Fe500, the actual yield strength of the steel used should not be markedly
higher than the yield strength specified and use in design computation

1.6 ETABS Software for Modelling and Analysis

ETABS is a special purpose software for configuration, examination and modeling of

a structure. This interface takes into consideration creation and alteration of the model,
execution of the analysis, and checking and advancement of the structure are
altogether done through this single interface. Graphical showcases of the outcomes,
including continuous presentation of time-history removals are effectively delivered.
The finite element library consists of different elements out of which the three
dimensional frame element was used in this analysis. The Frame element uses a
general, three-dimensional, beam-column grid formulation which includes the effects
of biaxial bending, torsion, axial deformation, and biaxial shear deformations.
Structures that can be modeled with this element include:
• Three-dimensional frames
• Three-dimensional trusses
• Planar frames
• Planar grillages
• Planar trusses
A frame element is modeled as a straight line connecting two joints. Each element has
its own local coordinate system for defining section properties and loads, and for

14 | P a g e
interpreting output. Each frame element may be loaded by self-weight, multiple
concentrated loads, and multiple distributed loads. End offsets are available to account
for the finite size of beam and column intersections. End releases are also available to
model different fixity conditions at the ends of the element. Element internal forces
are produced at the ends of each element and at a user specified number of equally-
spaced output stations along the length of the element. Loading options allow for
gravity, seismic loading, thermal and pre-stress conditions in addition to the usual
nodal loading with specified forces and or displacements. Dynamic loading can be in
the form of a base acceleration response spectrum, or varying loads and base
accelerations.
The building is modeled as a 3Dbare frame. Results from analysis are used in design
of beams and columns only (i.e. linear elements). ETABS also designs shell elements.
Joints are defined with constraints to serve as rigid floor diaphragm and hence slabs
can also be designed as effect of seismic load is seen on slab. The linear elements are
also designed primarily by ETABS to familiarize with machine computation and
exude confidence. This has been done as we are quite familiar with fundamentals of
FEM analysis techniques based on which the software package performs analysis and
gives results As we are working with a computer based system, the importance of data
input is as important as the result of output derived from analysis. Hence with
possibility of garbage-ingarbage-out, we need to check our input parameters in explicit
detail.
Material properties are defined for elements in terms of their characteristic strength i.e.
M25 for slabs, beams and M25 for columns. Also, section properties are defined as
obtained from preliminary design. Loading values are input as obtained from IS 875.
Loading combination based on IS 875 (part V):1987 and IS 1893 (part 1):2002 for
ultimate limit state and IS 456:2000 for serviceability limit state is prepared. An
envelope load case of all load combinations is prepared to provide us with the
envelope of stresses for design.

2. THEORIES & LITERATURE REVIEWS

2.1 Theory
2.1.1 Reinforced Cement Concrete

Reinforced Cement Concrete (RCC) is a boon for modern days construction work. Its
flexibility and superior performance has made it a first choice in the construction.
Design of RCC structures seems complex. However, it is simply the assembly of
beams, columns, slab, walls, and foundation; and every component are designed
separately based on the standard specified for them. History of RCC is not so long. It
started in the beginning of the last century. It started with pure empirical approach of
design, as there were no theories were developed to support the design. Then, the
design was done by the “Working Stress Method”, which followed Hooke’s law. This
was followed by
“Ultimate Load Method”, and at present the design is done by “Limit State Method”,
which is the best method up till now.

2.1.1.1 Advantages of RCC

• Compressive and tensile strength

• Can be casted to take the shape required
• Significantly increases the strength and reduces cross sectional dimension of the
structural High members
2.1.1.2 Disadvantages of RCC

17 | P a g e
• Needs mixing, casting and curing, all of which affect the final strength of
concrete
• Requires preparation of formwork
• Cracks develop in concrete due to shrinkage and the application of live loads
2.1.2 Design Methods
2.1.2.1 Working Stress Method
2.1.2.2 Ultimate Load Method
2.1.2.3 Limit State Method

2.1.2.1 Working Stress Method

Working Stress Method is the traditional method of design not only for Reinforced
Concrete but also for structural steel and timber design. The conceptual basis of the
WSM assumes that the structural material behaves in a linear elastic manner and that
appropriate safety can be ensured by suitably limiting the stresses in the material due
to the presumed working loads (service loads) on the structure. WSM also assumes
that both the steel reinforcement and concrete act together and are perfectly elastic at
all stages, and hence the modular ratio can be used to determine the stresses in steel
and concrete.

2.1.2.2 Ultimate Load Method

This is also known as load factor method or ultimate strength method. In this we make
use of the nonlinear region of stress strain curves of steel and concrete. The safety is
ensured by introducing load factor. The Ultimate Load Method makes it possible to
consider the effects of different loads acting simultaneously thus solving the
shortcomings of WSM. As the ultimate strength of the material is considered we will
get much slender sections for columns and beams compared to WSM method. But the
serviceability criteria is not met because of large deflections and cracks in the sections.
The fallback in the method was that even though the nonlinear stress strain behavior of
was considered sections but the nonlinear analysis of the structural was not carried out

18 | P a g e
for the load effects. Thus the stress distribution at ultimate load was just the
magnification of service load by load factor following the linear elastic theory.

2.1.2.3 Limit State Method

It is based on safety and serviceability requirements associated with the design loads
and design strengths of the materials. These design loads and design strengths are
obtained by applying partial safety factors for characteristic loads and strengths of the
materials as concrete and steels.
The limit state method of design covers different criteria for design. The two major
criteria are:

• Limit State of Collapse

The limit states that concern with the safety of people and/or safety of the structure
are classified as limit states of collapse. The limit state of collapse of the structure or
part of the structure could be assessed from rupture of one or more critical sections
and from buckling due to elastic or plastic instability (including effects of sway
where appropriate) or overturning. The resistance to bending, shear, torsion and axial
loads at every section shall not be less than the appropriate value at that section
produced by the probable most unfavorable combination of loads on the structure
using the appropriate partial safety factors.
• Limit State of Serviceability
The limit states that concern with the functioning of the structure or structural
members under normal use, or comfort of people or appearance of the construction
works shall be classified as limit states of serviceability. It includes limit for
deflection and cracking or local damage. Excessive deflection and cracks adversely
affects the finishes, efficiency and appearance of the structure and it may impair
protection to embedded reinforcements too.
2.1.3 Type of Foundations
2.1.3.1 Shallow Foundation
2.1.3.2 Deep Foundation

19 | P a g e
2.1.3.1 Shallow Foundation

A shallow foundation is one whose width is greater than its depth. Shallow foundations
are located just below the lowest part of the wall or column which they support. In fact,
a footing is an enlargement of the base of the column or wall it supports. The shallow
footings are of following types:
i Strap or cantilever footing
ii Mat or raft foundations
iii Isolated footings
iv Wall footing/ Strip footing
v Spread footing
vi Stepped footing
vii Combined footing
In this report we are discussing about the isolated and combined footing.

Isolated foundations:
An isolated footing is a shallow type footing which supports one column of a building. It is an
independent footing designed to support an independent column.
There are some reasons to design isolated footings. One of them is, it is economical. But there
are some other reasons. Such as –

 If the columns of a building aren’t closely spaced.

 When the soil bearing capacity is high.
 If the loads on footing are less.

20 | P a g e
Combined Footing:

When individual footing has to accommodate two or in exceptional case more than two
columns, then such case is known as combined footing. When two or three columns are
located very near to each other, we provide a single substructure for them and the footing
is known as combined footing. The objective is to get uniform pressure distribution under
the footing.

2.1.3.2 Deep Foundation

A deep foundation is a type of foundation that transfers building loads to the earth
farther down from the surface than a shallow foundation does to a subsurface layer or
a range of depths.

2.2 Literature Review

2.2.1 Indian standards (IS) codes of practice
 IS: 875- 1987 (Reaffirmed 2003) - Code of Practice for Design Loads (Other than
Earthquake) for Buildings and Structures:
A building has to perform many functions satisfactorily. Amongst these functions are
the utility of the building for the intended use and occupancy, structural safety, fire
safety; and compliance with hygienic, sanitation, ventilation and daylight standards.
The design of the building is dependent upon the minimum requirements prescribed
21 | P a g e
for each of the above functions. The minimum requirements pertaining to the
structural safety of the building are being covered in this code by way of laying down
minimum designed load which have to be assumed for dead loads, imposed load,
snow load and other external loads, the structure is required to bear. Strict conformity
to loading standard recommended in this code claims to ensure the safety of the
buildings and thereby reduced the hazards to life and property caused by unsafe
structures as well as eliminates the wastage caused by the assumption of unnecessary
heavy loading. This code is divided into five different parts for five different kinds of
loadings. The different parts of the code are:
Part 1: Dead Loads- Unit Weight of Building Materials and Stored Materials:
This part deals with the dead load to be assumed in the design of the building. These
loads are given in the form of unit weight of materials. The unit weight of the
materials that are likely to be stored in the building are also given in the code for the
purpose of the load calculation due to stored materials. This code covers the unit
weight or mass of the materials and parts and components in the building that apply to
the determination of the dead load in the design of building.
Part 2: Imposed Loads
Imposed load is the load assumed to be produced by the intended use or occupancy of
a building including the weight of moveable partitions, distributed, concentrated loads,
loads due to impact and vibrations and dust loads (Excluding wind, seismic, snow,
load due to temperature change, creep, shrinkage, differential settlements etc.) This
part of the code deals with imposed load of the building produced by the intended
occupancy or use. Minimum imposed load that should be taken into consideration for
the purpose of structural safety of the buildings are given in the code but it do not
cover the incidental to construction and special cases of vibration, such as moving
machinery, heavy acceleration from cranes hoist etc.

• IS 1893 (Part 1): 2016 Criteria for Earthquake Resistant Design of Structures (General
Provision and Building):
This code deals with the assessment of seismic loads on various structures and
earthquake resistant design of buildings. Its basic provisions are applicable to

22 | P a g e
buildings; elevated structures; industrial and stack like structures; bridges; concrete
masonry and earth dams; embankment and retaining structures and other structures.
Temporary supporting structures like scaffoldings etc. need not be considered for the
seismic loads. It is concerned with the methods of determining seismic loads and the
effects of various irregularities in a building can have upon its seismic response. This
standard does not deal with the construction features relating to earthquake resistant
design in building and other structures.

• IS 13920: 1993 (Reaffirmed 2003) Ductile Detailing of Reinforced Concrete Structures

Subjected to Seismic Force- Code of Practice:
This standard covers the requirements for designing and detailing of monolithic
reinforced concrete buildings so as to give them adequate toughness and ductility to
resist sever earthquake shock without collapse. The provision for the reinforced
concrete construction given in the code are specifically to the monolithic reinforced
concrete construction. For precast and pre-stressed concrete members, its use is
limited only if they can provide the same level of ductility as that of monolithic
reinforced concrete construction during or after earthquake. The code includes the
detailing rules for flexural members, column and frame member subjected to bending
and axial loads and shear walls.

• IS 456: 2000 (Reaffirmed 2005) Plain and Reinforced Concrete – Code of Practice:
This Indian Standard code of practice deals with the general structural use of plain and
reinforced concrete based on Limit State Design Method. According to the code, plain
concrete structures referred to those structures where reinforcement if provided is
ignored for determination of the strength of the structure. This code does not cover
special requirements for the structures like bridges, chimneys, hydraulic structures,
earthquake resistance buildings etc. but allows the use of separate code for those
structures in conjunction with this code

2.2.2 Indian Standard Special Publications (SP):

23 | P a g e
For the clarification and explanation for the clauses and equations mentioned in Indian
Standard Codes, Bureau of Indian Standard has published some special publications
including charts and tables for required values like material properties and explaining
examples of designs. Following design aids will be used for the design of the
structure:

• SP 16: Design Aids for Reinforced Concrete to IS 456-1978:

This handbook explains the use of formulae mentioned in IS 456 and provides several
design charts and interaction diagrams for flexure, deflection control criteria, axial
compression, compression with bending and tension with bending for rectangular
cross-sections for circular section in case of compression member) which can greatly
expedite the design process if done manually. This design aid is particularly useful for
the preliminary design.

• SP 34: Handbook on Concrete Reinforcement and Detailing:

The compilation of provisions and guidelines regarding reinforcement detailing
scattered throughout IS codes 456, 4326, 5525 and 13920 can be found in this
handbook. Searching for information in the original codes can be very time
consuming.
This handbook presents all that information in a well-organized manner.

2.2.3 Textbooks on RCC Design, Foundation and Earthquake Engineering

Many available books related to design of reinforced concrete structure and
earthquake engineering written by distinguished authors such as Pillai and Menon, SN
Sinha and AK Jain are based on the Indian Standard Codes of Practice and provides
sufficient theoretical background with illustrative examples. So, for the analysis and
design, references from such textbooks are very helpful. Books related to foundation
engineering will also be valuable in the design of building foundation. Besides these,
other books related to structural mechanics (Statics and Dynamics) will also be helpful
for performing and verifying the analysis output from computer software.
Apart from these references there may require data related to the past earthquake, the
earthquake zoning map and soil condition of the site. These data may be obtained

24 | P a g e
from the government authorities and other concerning organizations. The reports on
the same project prepared by the students of previous batches were also an important
reference to the project.

3. PRELIMINARY DESIGN
The preliminary sizing of structural elements was carried out based on deflection control criteria
and approximate loads obtained. The gravity loads on the structural elements are taken as per IS
875 Part I (dead loads) and IS 875 Part II (imposed loads). The unit weights of materials taken
for the calculation of dead load of the structure are as follows:

S.N. Materials Used Unit Weight Type Of Member

1. Cement Concrete for RCC 25 kN/m3 Beams, Columns, Slabs
2. Common Burnt Clay Bricks 20 kN/m3 Infill and Partition
Walls
3. Screed on floor 25mm 20 kN/m3 All Flooring Spaces
4. Finishing in step 30mm 20 kN/m3 All Flooring spaces
5. Floor Finishing 1.5 kN/m3 Load on Slab

3.1 Preliminary Design of Column

The column size is first assumed to be 355.6mm×355.6mm for dead load calculations.

Intermediate Column
Slab area = 23.783 m2
Load Intensity on Slab;
Self‐weight = 25 * 0.125 = 3.125 KN/m2
Imposed live load = 3KN/m2
Floor finish = 1 KN
Total load intensity = 3.125+3+1=7.125 KN/m2
Load of slab = 7.125 × 23.783 = 169.4538 KN
Load of Walls (Assuming 30% openings)
= 0.7×19.6×0.254×3.4798× (16’/2 + 16’/2 + 16’/2 +16’/2) = 0.7×19.6×0.254×3.4798 ×9.7576 =
118.327 KN
Load of Beam = 25×0.254× (0.3556-0.125) × 4.8768*2 = 14.282 KN
Dead Load of Columns = 25×0.3556×0.3556×3.4798 = 11 KN
Total load = 3×169.4538 + 3×118.327 KN + 3×14.282 +3×11 = 939.1884 KN
Factored Load = 1.5 × 939.1884 = 1408.7826 KN

Taking 2 % steel, M25 Concrete and Fe500 Steel,

Pu=0.4fck Ac + 0.67 fy As
Or, 1408.7826 ×1000 = 0.4 × 25 × (1-0.02) A + 0.67 × 500 × 0.02A 85381.0667
Or, A = 85381.0667 mm2
Taking a square column,

26 | P a g e
B = D = 292.201 mm
Provide square column of 355.6 mm* 355.6 mm i.e 14” *14”

3.2 Preliminary Design of Beam

From the architectural plan of the proposed building, the maximum span length of the
beam is 4876.8 mm, from the limit state of serviceability.
So, d≥span/15=4876.83/15=325.12
Then,
Approximate Depth= 355.6mm or 14”
Taking =355.6 mm
So take Width b=254 mm
Size of the Beam= 254mm*355.6mm

CHAPTER 4

4. METHODOLOGY
The structural analysis and designing of commercial building will be performed on the
basis of the Indian standard code for extracting values of strength and check the
designs. All the calculations shall be based on limit state design method. To complete
our project successfully and to achieve our objectives, we have planned series of
action in sequence as mentioned below:

4.1 Idealization of structure

4.1.1 Idealization of support

It deals with the fixity of the structure at the foundation level. In more detail terms,
this idealization is adopted to assess the stiffness of soil bearing strata supporting the
foundation. Although the stiffness of soil is finite in reality and elastic foundation
design principles address this property to some extent, our adoption of rigid
foundation overlooks it. Elastic property of soil is addressed by parameters like
Modulus of Elasticity, Modulus of Subgrade reaction, etc.
4.1.2 Idealization of loads

The load acting on the clear span of a beam should include floor or any types of load
acting over the beam on the tributary areas bounded by 450 lines from the corner of the
panel i.e. Yield line theory is followed. Thus, a triangular or trapezoidal type of load
acts on the beam.

4.1.3 Idealization of structural system

Initially individual structural elements like beam, column, slab, staircase, footing, etc.
are idealized. Loads are modeled into the structure in several load cases and load
combination.
4.2 Load Assessment

The various possible loading likely to occur in the commercial building during its
lifetime is analyzed based on the IS code of practice.

28 | P a g e
4.2.1 Gravity Loads:

Gravity Loads acting on the building are the weight of structural members, floor
finishes, partition walls, overhead water tanks, etc. To define these loads, the materials
to be used will be chosen and their weights shall be determined based Indian standard
code of practice for design loads (other than earthquake) for buildings and structures:
IS 875 (part I):1987 Dead Loads
IS 875 (part II):1987 Imposed Load

4.2.2 Lateral Loads:

Lateral Loads acting on the building are wind load and earthquake load. Wind load are
not so dominant in the proposed site so only earthquake loads will be considered.
Earthquake load is calculated based on Seismic Coefficient Method which is an
approximation of dynamic loading due to earthquake to equivalent static lateral loads.
Codal provisions used will be:
IS 1893 (Part I): 2002 Criteria for Earthquake Design of Structures

4.2.3 Combinations of load:

The different calculations of loads will be worked out considering IS 875 (part
V):1987
Load Combinations:
There are all together four load cases considered for the structural analysis and are
mentioned as below:
i) Dead Load (DL) ii) Live Load (LL) iii) Earthquake load in X- direction (EQx)
iv) Earthquake load in Y- direction (EQy)

Following Load Combinations are adopted as per IS 1893 (Part I): 2002
Clause6.3.1.2
i) 1.5 (DL + LL) ii) 1.5 (DL + EQx) iii) 1.5 (DL - EQx) iv) 1.5 (DL + EQy)
v) 1.5 (DL - EQy) vi) 1.2 (DL + LL + EQx) vii) 1.2 (DL + LL - EQx)
viii) 1.2 (DL + LL + EQy) ix) 1.2 (DL + LL – EQy) x) 0.9DL + 1.5EQx
xi) 0.9DL - 1.5EQx xii) 0.9DL + 1.5EQy xiii) 0.9DL - 1.5EQy

29 | P a g e
The characteristics load considered in the design of foundation is Dead load plus Live
load. To find out the stress at the various points of the foundation, depth of footing
and Reinforcement at most critical factored loads are taken into account.

Centre of mass
The center of mass of a distribution of mass in space is the unique point where the
weighted relative position of the distributed mass sums to zero. This is the point to
which a force may be applied to cause a linear acceleration without an angular
acceleration. In the case of a single rigid body, the center of mass is fixed in relation
to the body, and if the body has uniform density, it will be located at the centroid.

Centre of Stiffness
Center of rigidity (stiffness) is the point where the object at which, if force is applied,
it won’t be able to rotate, but just translate in space. This is sort of similar to the center
of gravity (since it means that there would be no torque if force is applied there), but
it’s different in most cases since the gravitational force is central and a field, while a
regular push or pull or a harmonic oscillator are not.

Base shear and Shear wall

Base shear is an estimate of the maximum expected lateral force that will occur due to
seismic ground motion at the base of a structure.
A shear wall is a vertical element of a seismic force resisting system that is designed
to resist in-plane lateral forces, typically wind and seismic loads.

4.3 Analysis of Building using ETABS

The analysis of structure is carried out in a commercial computer software ETABS,

about which we already explained in chapter 1. The results of analysis are used
according to our necessities in designing representative beams and columns sections.
A detailed manual design of these sample representative sections are presented in the
next chapter. The ETABS analysis gives different results and data that can be shown
to represent the work. Diagrammatic results are shown in the Annex while other data
results are shown in Annex- . Economic designing is a non-ending process which
stops when the designer thinks the design is valid. This software allows us to design
different sections of a building and compare it to get optimized structure which is safe
and economically sound.

4.4 Design of structural members

Manual calculation for the design of slab and staircase (flexure), beam (flexure, shear)
and column (flexure, shear, axial) will be carried out based on limit state method.
During this process, sectional size and amount of reinforcement required will be
carried out. Help of ETABS software is also taken in our design. All manual
calculations are shown in chapter 5.
4.5 Detailing
Ductile detailing of rebar is done based on IS 13920:2002 for the provision of
compliance with earthquake resistant design philosophy. Special consideration is
taken in detailing of linear frame elements (Beams and Columns). Detailing provisions
of IS 13920:2002 and IS 556:2000 are used extensively for these members to comply
with the relevant codes of practice. SP 35 detailing handbook for IS 556 is also used
for reinforcement detailing of area elements (Slabs and Staircase). Detailing is given
in Annex-B.

4.6 Drawings in AutoCAD
AutoCAD is commercial software for 2D and 3Dcomputer-aided design (CAD) and
drafting. As specified in the requirement of the project assignment, following drawing
will be created on AutoCAD.
• Architectural plan of typical floors, elevation and cross section of the
building.
• Detailed Structural drawing of full size beam, full size column, slab and
staircase.
• Longitudinal and cross section drawings are made to represent specifically
the proper detailing of rebar in individual elements, at beam column joints,
at the end support of slabs and in staircase.
AutoCAD Drawings along with detail drawings are provided in the Annex-B.

5.2 Base Shear Calculation

The seismic weights are calculated in a manner similar to gravity loads. The weight of
columns and walls in any storey shall be equally distributed to the floors above and
below the storey. Following reduced live loads are used for analysis: Zero on terrace, and
50% on other floors (IS: 1893 (Part 1): 2002, Clause 7.4).

The seismic weight of the floor is the lumped weight, which acts at the respective
floor level at the center of mass of the floor.

Design Seismic Load

34 | P a g e
The infill walls in upper floors may contain large openings, although the solid walls
are considered in load calculations. Therefore, fundamental time period T is obtained
by using the following formula:
Ta = 0.075 h0.75 [IS 1893 (Part 1):2002, Clause 7.6.1]

= 0.075 x (11)0.75 = 0.453sec.

Zone factor, Z = 0.36 for Zone II [IS: 1893 (Part 1):2002, Table 2]
Importance factor, I = 1.5
Medium soil site and 5% damping
Sa /g = 1.36/T
=1.36/0.453
=3
Also, we have,
Ah= (ZI/2R)*(Sa/g)
= ((0.36*1.5)/2*5)*3
= 0.162
Base Shear (Vb) = Ah*W = 0.162*13754.6285= 2228.25 kN

The total horizontal load of 1821.938 kN is now distributed along the height of the
building as per clause 7.7.1 of IS1893 (Part 1): 2002. This distribution is shown in
table:

6. RESULT AND CONCLUSION

83 | P a g e
With the help of this project, we got an opportunity to get involved in a real project. The fact
that Nepal lies in a hotspot for tectonic activities is a big factor to be accounted for in the design
of any structure that aims to be safe, durable and serviceable. In this regard, the details of the
structure we have designed for use as a community building, to the best of our team’s
knowledge, incorporate the required precautionary measures that allow it to overcome the perils
that come with being situated in an earthquake prone zone along with the regular gravity loads
that are expected in such a structure. Hence, we as the students of Civil Engineering hope that
this project meets the expectations of our respected supervisor and the rest of our teachers to
whom we owe the sum total of our knowledge in this subject.

After relentless effort and hard work of our team, we have finally concluded our
academic project entitled ‘Structural Analysis and Seismic-Resistant Design of Multi-
Storied Community Building’. The success of our project was possible due to
guidance, supervision, co-operation from our supervisor, teachers, colleagues and
seniors. It was our teamwork that helped us overcome the lengthy design procedure
and surpass our own expectations towards the final year projects. This project work
has helped us to acquire knowledge and skill with an emphasis of practical
application.
During our entire work, we were able to deal with various codes for the seismic design
and analysis of composite loads, column loads, moments, deflections, nature of
impacts on each and every member of the section through ETABS analysis. Due
attention is given to maintain the accuracy while analyzing the data and designing the
structural elements in computer.
