Activity 2.1.

1 Wood Frame Systems

Introduction
Most people do not consider what is behind the painted walls or exterior surface in
most buildings. Homes are often constructed with a wood frame, especially if the
area has an abundant supply of wood. Much of the United States has an abundant
supply, so wood frame buildings are common. Different regions, however, dictate
other differences, such as whether the outside facing walls are made of 2x4 or 2x6
studs to allow for different amounts of insulation. Wood frame construction has
existed for many years. If you visit a construction site to observe the skeleton of
such a structure, you should be able to make sense of the placement of the different
support pieces.

Equipment
● Internet and/or reference texts

Procedure
In this activity, you will use available resources to identify the primary parts of a
traditional wood-frame structure and then describe the purpose of each.

Use letters or numbers to identify at least 15 components in the image below.

Create a table to identify each component and describe the component’s purpose. Add
components not included in the Wood Framed Systems presentation to your table.

Label Component Component’s Purpose

Floor Joists
Horizontal members that are used to support the floor
and the ceiling.

Sub floor Structural slabs of wood put on top of the floor joists

Walls
Made up of studs to create the vertical sides of a
structure

Stud Makes up a wall’s infrastructure. aka vertical beams

Top Plate Horizontal beam on top of studs used to hold walls
together.

Sole Plate Horizontal member that holds the wall and is located at
the bottom of the studs.

Window Opening Reinforced hole in a wall

Header
Horizontal member that supports the top part of a
window opening

Sill
A horizontal member that is seen on the bottom of any
opening.

Roof Trusses Large triangles that make up your roof, supportive

structure

Insulation
Helps diminish sound and keeps it either cool or warm in
the structure.

Sheathing
Basically subfloor for the walls and the roof

Weather-resistant Materials designed to keep out liquid water but allows

barrier water vapor to escape

Siding Boards used to create the surface of the outside walls

Underlayment
Keeps your roof from having leaks

Asphalt Shingles Shingles made with asphalt that are used on a roof.

Conclusion
1. List, describe and explain the purpose of two components of a residential
building that you are familiar with, such as your home.
Asphalt shingles help waterproof your roof, and a sole plate is a piece of wood that
holds up the studs for a wall.

2. Which part of wood frame construction do you think will change the most in the
near future? Explain the change and why you believe it will occur soon.
I think that the weather-resistant barriers will change the most in the near future
because people are looking for a more efficient option that will save money.
