TYPES OF WALL PARTITION AND DETAILS

What is a wall partition?

- a wall or division made up of bricks, studding, glass, or other such material and provided for the
purpose of dividing one room or portion of a room from another.

CONCRETE WALL

- constructed as a load bearing structure to

transfers loads from floor to the wall below
or to the foundation, in addition to divide
spaces in multi-storey buildings. Moreover,
concrete wall is a desirable structural
element in earthquake prone areas since it
exhibit satisfactory performance during
earthquakes.

Precast

- Precast concrete is a construction material created by

pouring concrete into a preshaped mold. The concrete is
then left to cure in an appropriate environment. Once
cured, the mold is removed and reused.

- provides superior fire resistance and sound control

for the individual units and reduces fire insurance
rates.
Details:

Typical thicknesses: 4 to 12 in.

Finishes: Since wall panels are cast in a flat orientation, the form side is typically the side that will be

exposed to view in the final construction.

Connection

How do concrete walls connected?

- The connections are usually made by placing a loose plate between two structural steel plates that are
embedded both in the cast-in-place or the precast concrete panel and welded together.

ICF (Insulated Concrete Forms)

- Insulated concrete form (ICF) is a system of expanded polystyrene (EPS) rigid insulation blocks
separated by plastic webbing. It is used as an integrated concrete form to pour a concrete wall instead
of a traditional wood plank or plywood form.

ICF walls come in 4”, 6”, 8”, 10” and 12” thickness (some
manufacturers go even thicker)
Dowels

- Dowel bars are short steel bars that are

installed in concrete slabs to provide a
mechanical connection that does not restrict
horizontal joint movement. They are designed to
reduce joint deflection and stress in the
approach and leave slab by increasing load
transfer efficiency.

- Dowel bars are offered for the purpose of

transferring load across the concrete joints. They
are used for reducing corner cracking. Dowel
bars are also provided for reducing joint faulting.
The purpose of dowel bars is to improve the
performance of the joints.

METAL LATH WALL

- Metal lath partition walls are constructed by placing 2cm or

2.5cm channels vertically (called studs) and fixing metal lath to
it on one side. The plaster is then applied to both sides. If the
hollow partition wall is required, metal lath is fixed to the
channels on both sides and then plastered.

WOODEN WALL

- Wooden partition walls are lightweight and easy to

construct but they come with some drawbacks. They
are neither sound-proof nor fire-proof and are prone to
get affected by dampness which might lead to insect
infestation.
- Wood partition walls are of two types: standard and
trussed. Standard partitions have vertical members or
studs that are placed between the higher horizontal
(head) and lower horizontal (sill) members. Trussed
partitions are self-supporting and are used when you
need to construct a partition on a story above the first
one and there is no support like another partition
beneath it.
Drywall

- a type of construction in which the interior wall is applied in a dry condition without the use of
mortar. It contrasts with the use of plaster, which dries after application. The materials used in
drywall construction are gypsum board, plywood, fibre-and-pulp boards, and asbestos-cement
boards.

Exterior Wall

- An exterior wall typically forms part of a building envelope,

separating the accommodation inside from the outside.

- Exterior concrete walls shall be 200mm thick, while interior

concrete walls shall be 150mm thick. This is indicative of the
finished wall thickness including the plastering and tile works.

LOG CABINS

- Logs are stacked together horizontally, fitting tightly and forming the walls. There should be
little space between the logs since no insulation is used. Logs are visible on the inside and
outside of the home for an authentic log cabin feel.
- log cabins have at least 34mm thick walls as standard, as well feel this is the minimal wall
thickness for a high-quality cabin.
