Heat
The preferred storage temperature is under +25°C and over +0°C. If the temperature goes
under 0°C care should be taken to avoid distorting the rubber parts during handling; before
assembling the parts temperature should be increased slowly to room temperature. Direct
contacts to heaters, owens, radiators and direct sunlight should be avoided.
Humidity
The relative humidity in the storage should be below 70%. Condensation of water should not
occure. This can happen if temperature frequently varies quickly; open or unheated storage is
not suitable! Parts should not be stored when they are moist.
Light
Direct sunlight or strong artificial light with ultraviolet content can be disastrous. To store parts in
individual UV-resistant bags is the best way. To cover the windows with an orange or red
coating is recommended. A day in direct sunlight can destroy a clean O-ring!
Oxygen
Ventilation should be kept low if possible especially if rubber parts are not stored in air tight bags.
Ozone
It is not adviseable in the storage to have such apparatus that generates a lot of ozone as
powerful fluorescent lamps, devices with high tension current, big electric motors or devices
which can cause electric sparking.
Tension
Parts should be stored free without tension or deformation (ie. if O-rings are fitted in a
subassembly like a valve or a cylinder they are under tension). This should be avoided.
If the assembled parts are well protected against oxygen and ozone in protective plastic bags,
they can be stored for short periods.
Dissolvents
Rubber parts are not allowed to be stored in contact with dissolvents. Never wash rubber parts
with solvents like petrol, benzene hydrocarbon or tricholroethylene before storing them!
As an example, at Sandvik Mining and Construction Lyon, the storage is done in a temperate
area whitout humidity, the store parts are in UV-resitant bags. A label on the bags indicates the
delivery date and the validity date (delivery date + four years).
