Executive summary
Renewable energy sources i.e. energy generated from solar, wind, biomass, hydro power,
geothermal and ocean resources are considered as a technological option for generating clean
energy. But the energy generated from solar is much less than the production by fossil fuels,
however, electricity generation by utilizing PV cells increases rapidly in recent years. This
completion report presents the completion of Solar Power system that harnesses the
renewable energies in Sun to generate electricity. This solar power generating system is
suitable for non-electrified rural areas, industries and also domestic areas.

As per the objectives of Government of Nepal to provide the accesses of energy to the people
living in rural areas, Alternative Energy Promotion Centre (AEPC) which is an
implementation organization of the project invited sealed bids for “Design, Supply,
Installation, Testing and Commissioning of 100 KWp Solar Mini-Grid System at Susta

Bank, Inverter and entire control system was installed inside the Powerhouse.Approximately
1500m2area was used for the plant out of which 98 m 2 areas was occupied by power house.
The 100KWp Solar Mini-Grid Plant would be used to provide the electricity service to
275households,Armed Police Force and educational Institutional and for other productive use
at Susta. The generated energy was transmitted to the community through 400VTransmission
line. Till date there is no access of National Grid to the project site.

The generated Solar energy can be used for both purposes i.e. supply the energy to the
community and the excess energy is used to charge the 768 kWh battery bank. The stored
energy of battery is used for lighting and to run necessary electrical appliances as and when
required. The30NOs of street lights installed at poles of transmission lines has been used for
lighting at the necessary and essential areas and its surroundings during night time. At the
moment the plant is in operation as an off-grid system. But the system has been designed in
such a way that once the grid power will be available at site there is option to charge the
battery from the grid and export excess energy to the local utility grid. The system acts

according to the load, as there is not possibility to export the generated energy due to
unavailability of National Grid. The maximum production may vary depending upon the

Battery State of charge and load. Depending on the proposed design, the installed system has
two days of autonomy during cloudy and rainy days. The overall system Installation was
carried out by technical team of Topsun Energy under the supervision of Project Leader of
the Project.

Introduction

The installed 100KWp Solar Mini-grid System at Susta, Nawalparasi is used for lighting
purpose for households, to run electrical equipment of Academic Institutions, Armed Police
Force and to run the small scale enterprise within the Susta Rural Municipality Ward No, 5.
This Mini grid had used only one energy source i.e. solar source which is a renewable source
of energy. This 100 KWp Mini grid is grouped into three different systems i.e. production,
distribution and end users connections. The Mini grid production system comprises energy
generation technologies like100 kWp Solar Modules, Smart On grid and off-grid inverters,
Multi cluster Box from SMA, and Battery Bank. The electricity distribution system moves
energy generated at production system to end users. The distribution system consists of
distribution and /or transmission lines, transformers, and the infrastructures to support the
lines, such as poles, conductors, insulators and so on. Transmission and distribution lines are
overhead as per the technical specifications and BoQ suggested in the contract agreement.
Finally end user system consists of safe connection to and from the mini grid, systems to
prevent electrical shocks to both equipment and users. The consumers can now use the
generated energy as per their requirement. Smart prepaid energy meters were installed at end
users entities and the end users need to buy a token in the form of card and need to input it to
the meter to use electricity as long as the balance remains. The meter will automatically cut
when the purchased power is used up.

Harnessing of non-polluting renewable energy resources to control greenhouse gases is

receiving stimulus from the government of Nepal. The Renewable Energy mission, which is
part of the National Action Plan on Climate Change supported by different government and
non government organization has been set up to promote the development and use of solar
energy for power generation and other uses with the ultimate objective of making renewable
energy competitive with fossil-based energy options. The Solar Mini grid system for power
generation had been deployed Susta Rural Muncipality-5, Narayan Pari Susta, Nawalparasi
for electrification. With the downward trend in the cost of solar energy and appreciation for
the need for development of solar power, small and large solar power projects have recently
been implemented at different parts of country. A significant part of the large potential of
solar energy in the country could be developed by promoting similar solar photovoltaic
power systems of varying sizes and capacity as per the need and affordability coupled with
ensuring adequate return on investment. The100KWp Solar Mini grid system of Susta,
Nawalparasi is estimated to meet the energy requirement of the community.

Inverter:

PV Inverters (STP CORE 1):

The Sunny Tripower is a transformerless PV inverter, with 6Maximum Power Point Tracker
(MPPT), that converts the direct current of the PV array to grid-compliant, 400Vac three-
phase current and can be feeds it into the utility grid if needed. The product is suitable for
indoor and outdoor use. In this case the three phase output of Sunny Tripower is supplied to
loads directly during day time and also supply excess energy to charge batteries through
Sunny Island or Battery Inverters.

The project contains two nos. of each 50 KW PV inverter which converts the DC power from
PV Modules to three phase AC power suitable for household and enterprise electrical loads.
The main output has no break functionality. The output from the PV inverter can directly be
supplied to the connected loads in the event of a grid failure when grid is connected in future
or when shore/generator power is disconnected or whenever it gets connected with the loads
or can be supplied to the battery bank through Battery Inverter or Sunny Island. The energy
generated from Solar PV modules can be used for supply to the load and charge the battery
bank. But the installed plant at Susta community, Nawalparasi have not AC input source at
present and only backup energy used to run the loads at day and night time. The system uses
two string inverters and has three phase output. The efficiency of the solar PV inverter is
>98%.

Figure 5. Mounting of On-grid Inverters

8
100 KWp SOLAR MINI GRID SYSTEM FOR SUSTA |

Off-grid Battery Inverters (SI8.0H):

The Sunny Island is a battery inverter that controls the electrical energy balance in an off-grid
system, in a battery backup system or in a system for increased self-consumption. In a
battery-backup system, we had used the SMA Sunny Island or Battery Inverters for increased
self-consumption. The product is used in weather-protected indoor areas. The product was
used as stationary equipment. AC sources (such as PV inverters) have been used in off-grid
systems and battery-backup systems for energy supply. The powers of individual
Sunny Island inverters are added to yield the total maximum power in three phase mode. The
Sunny Island uses batteries for energy storage and supply to the loads when required. The
nominal voltage of the battery must correspond to the input voltage on the DC connection. A
fuse switch-disconnector (e.g., Battery Fuse) was installed between the battery and the
Sunny Island. The Sunny Island 8.0H supports a wide range of on-grid and off-grid
applications for operation in remote off-grid areas to home energy management. In our
project we had used 12 units of SI8.0H (each 6.4 kW capacity) to deliver 76.8kW continuous
load. There are altogether 4 cluster of Sunny Island and each cluster consists of 3 sunny
island. Out of three one cluster is operated as Master Cluster and other two as extension
cluster or slave. The extension clusters are operated by Master Cluster. The Sunny Island
inverters charge the battery during the day time and supply power to load as and when
needed.

Figure 6. Arrangement of SI (Off-grid Inverters)

MC-Box-12:
The Multicluster Box is a device of a multicluster power conditioning system. It is used to
establish stand-alone grids with several Sunny Island inverters. The Multicluster Box is a

stationary switching device combination (AC main distributor) to which you can connect the
Sunny Island inverters, the loads, the generator and another power generation system such as
a PV system. In our project we had used Multicluster-Box 12.3-20 which will also facilitate
for future grid connection purpose.

Battery Bank:
The battery section comprises of 1920 no’s of 2000Ah@2V VRLA Tubular Gel Batteries
(OPzV series batteries). The battery configuration is adjusted such that there are 4 banks
connected in each cluster of SI. The battery is charged through PV modules only. It has also
option to charge the system through grid if the grid power is available; the chosen smart
inverters are able to charge the battery during different condition.

Figure 7. Battery bank arrangement

Remote Monitoring:
Another important aspect of this installation is a very informative energy monitoring
(remote monitoring provision). The energy produced, the output power and other parameter
so the power plant can also be monitored through internet by the AEPC and Topsun Energy
remotely. This remote monitoring enables to monitor the system online daily and take
action, in case of any fault. We can easily calculate the daily units generated by the solar
power plant and daily units consumed by the community with the help of this remote
monitoring system.

Lightening Protection:
There is one nos. of lightening arrestors installed at top of 7 meter pole grounded separately
to earth so as to protect the solar modules from the lightening. The coverage area of installed
lighting arrester is 60meter surrounding from installed point. We have a system two meter
away from the lighting arrester point. 35 square mm wire is used to connect between lighting
arrester and earthing electrode. Likewise lighting arrestor was installed for all current
carrying conductors at the start and end of the transmission and distribution lines. Besides
start and end of transmission lines lighting arrestor were provided in every 500 meter along
distribution lines. Earthing were done at each lighting arrestor along the electrical lines using
a minimum 600mm*600mm*3mm ground plate of copper.
Methodology of Installation of Lighting Arrester:

 Measuring the coverage area of the arrester

 Fixing the lighting arrester base with the help of lighting arrester coverage area
 Fixing the lighting arrester earthing point
 Connecting the lighting arrester point and earthing electrode point through 35mm Sq
Wire

Earthing:
The project comprises of two separate earthing, one for the lightening protection and one for
the equipment earthing that is DC Earthing for the protection of various equipments like
Inverters. The body earthing of the solar modules, structure, Battery box etc. also connected
to this earthing. The earthing is done by measuring the earth resistance from Earth Megger
Tester before the earthing and after the earthing of soil. The earth resistance were measured
as 5Ω.One meter Copper rod was used as the electrode which is buried into the earth by
mixing the earth chemical compound.
12

Problem faced
Project implementation is itself a tough task in such location. There was no access of road up to the
project site. We were not allowed to use Indian Territory to transport the goods. The only way of
transportation left was through traditional wooden boat. There was always high risk of manpower, and
solar goods during travelling in boat. Due to COVID pandemic the project took almost 11 months to
take into operation. As a result the construction of project was ongoing during rainy season as well.
Due to continuous and heavy rainfall during the construction phase, the heavy flood of height
approximately 3 feet entered into the community and project site two times within the same months.
Despite of 2 times heavy floods, only few minor damages has been observed and such damages were
been corrected and operated smoothly. Some of the members from technical team were suffered for
the COVID as well and continued work after they were tested negative.

Project Benefits:

The project proposal contemplated benefits in three major areas: Economics, Energy Pricing, and
Environmental. The benefit goals in all of these major areas have been accomplished with the
following outcomes in both immediate benefits and benefits to be realized over time:

Benefits/Advantages realized after completion of the project

 Centralized and therefore easier maintenance

 Greatly reduced contribution to Global Warming
 Low running cost
 Availability of electricity supports proper rural health services
 Health and safety benefits to the poor people. Respiratory disease and impaired eyesight
results due to use of kerosene oil and candles.
 Allows people to extend their workdays till evening and up to night.

26

 Electric light improves literacy, because people can read after dark more easily than they
can by candle or lamplight.
 No waste nor loss of electricity: When single households do not consume power in the
village it can be used by other households or stored in batteries

 Local socio-economic impact is important!

Conclusion

The system was installed and operated successfully according to the requirement of AEPC. The
100 KW Solar system will be capable of supplying electrical loads projected during the detailed
feasibility study. The project was started on January 2020 and completed on mid of September
2020. 275 Number of Household, Academic Institution, and APF gets direct benefit from the
plant. As 100% grants was provided by AEPC, Rural Municipality and Terai Madhes Prosperity
Programme, so, the cost of generated energy will be very low. All the PV products and
components that were used are of high standard in quality and expected to get better reliability
and better performance throughout its operational life (warranty period). The system expected to
work well in the future too, provided if it is properly maintained and operated. Despite the high
reliability of the system itself, one full time operator was kept to see the overall operation and
maintenance of the system. Care should be taken during the days when there is no any sunshine
for few days and the voltage levels should be regularly checked to ensure that battery should not
deeply discharged. Proper care and maintenance will give the sustainability to the system.
