MUSC 221 - Introduction to Conducting Philosophy Statement

Brendan O’Neal

Part 1

The primary role of a conductor is to lead their ensemble in a piece of music well.

Leading them in a piece of music well means that they are expressive in their movements, their

expression is representative of the feeling of the music at all times, they give proper cues, they

are very familiar with the given piece of music and therefore know what to say or do to get what

they desire from the players of the ensemble. The conductor’s goal is for the ensemble to play

the piece of music how they want it to sound. Like the primary goals for the positions that will be

described following, the conductor’s primary goal should be the goal of the other positions of

director and educator as well. The difference is that this goal is the top priority for the conductor.

The primary role of the band director is in leading their ensemble to success for whatever

their measure of success is. This may include winning festivals or competitions. For an ensemble

to place well, logistical things like schedule of rehearsals, guest educators and conductors, and

placement of musicians in the ensemble are all examples of things directors must plan and

execute. With the director’s top priority being the success of the ensemble, things like a well-

rounded education of the students and being a masterful conductor come second for the director.

The primary role of an educator in music is to teach their students well by conveying

knowledge and information clearly and respectfully. Each student’s individual performance is

most important to the educator, and this may include being a well-rounded musician, or being an

expert at a single instrument. The educator, more than the other positions, may be more

interested in the well-being of the individuals and the long-term development of the students. A
director may also be interested in this, but it is for the sake of the success of the ensemble

primarily and not the overall knowledge of the student.

Part 2

As a conductor, your responsibility is to lead. Keep information simple. Respect the

individuals. Everyone knows something you don’t. Be someone that you would want to conduct.

Don’t pretend--it’s obvious to others when you are dishonest. Give positive and negative

feedback when they need it. You can’t hide on the podium, so show who you are and be open to

change.
