Unit 9 Assignment 2

I asked someone I know 10 questions pertaining to their spirituality and overall wellness.

One of my friends was willing to answer my questions so I could help her with her spirituality

and wellness. I have included her answers below with the question in paragraph style format

along with my perception of what the answer means below. I think overall she needs to get more

in touch with her spirituality by trying to find some time away from everything going on but with

a husband and two children, it can be difficult. She needs to try to find some time to spend away

with everything to work on that. She did mention that she likes yoga, which I told her she could

use that as a type of meditation to focus on herself in that time and place when she does yoga.

There are many benefits to yoga along with improved strength, balance, flexibility, relieving

back pain, and heart health (Hopkinsmedicine.org, n.d.). Above all that yoga is also good for

unifying the connection between the body, mind, and spirit and working on one’s spirituality

(Katie M., 2019). I have the questions with her answers in the following paragraphs.

The first question I asked was, how she feels about her current spirituality state? I

explained to her from our class what the term spirituality in this sense meant. She replied saying

she feels ok, as far as how I explained it her spirituality could be better. I am assuming she was

saying that her spirituality is good but she could be more in tune with her spirituality but she

doesn’t really have the time to do that with an extremely busy life with a job, family, and her

gym activities. So, she probably would like to just has a hard time finding time. I feel like this

question is important because it is a good icebreaker to start the question and it get a person in

the mood to answer these type of questions which for most people are a bit different than normal

and it gets the interviewer a general sense of the connection of the spirituality of the interviewee.
Unit 9 Assignment 3

The next question I asked was why she feel she didn’t have time for spiritual connecting

activities like the yoga she mentioned earlier. I feel like asking the question pertaining to the

issue of free time would help be able to dig deeper into that topic and find maybe a deeper issue

pertaining to the problem. She may be saying that it is because she is busy, but it may also be a

deeper issue such as she just doesn’t want to do it which is ok. We all deserve a little rest time

and to be lazy sometimes but I believe and from knowing her it may just really be because she is

so busy and she is a healthcare worker so the stuff pertaining to covid-19 may just be adding on

stress to all of that.

The third question I asked was if her stress she had from her job affecting home life. She

said, it does quite a bit. She said that along with the stress of having to force her kids to do their

schoolwork on their laptops because in this area we are still doing virtual learning 3 days out of

the week. That there is a lot of stress coming from all directions. I asked her if she feels the yoga

might help with her stress and she said it may help, she use to do yoga to help reduce stress when

she had more free time before the pandemic. I asked this question because I feel like if she thinks

about how much the yoga use to help in stress reduction she may see the need to try to create free

time where she can to do it since yoga is an exercise that can pretty much be done anywhere

especially with YouTube videos and various platforms that offer yoga online you can do with

videos on the phone and other places.

The fourth question I asked was how she felt while doing yoga, I tried this question just

to remind her of how she felt when she use to do yoga. I feel like bringing back some of the

memories from when she use to do it would help trigger the ability for her to want to try to find

time to do it again, even if it isn’t as often as she use to do it, it would still at least be some way

for her to relief stress and reconnect to her mind body and spirit and re-establish the connection.
Unit 9 Assignment 4

It would also be helpful for her emotional help as well. Yoga can as well improve the mind

which improving the mind is also good for helping the body and it is always good to help your

body, mind, and spirit in any capacity (Vennie, 2017). Through these questions I am trying to get

her to see that if she started doing yoga again, it may help her mind by relieving stress, help the

body by strengthening it through various yoga poses, and helping those will help her reconnect to

her spirit and it will help her in her life overall.

The fifth question I asked was is there any activities your doing that you could postpone

or delay or re-schedule to be able to make time for yourself to be able to do yoga or other things

to work on reconnecting your inner self? She replied with no not really, she said she does go out

a lot on the weekends when she can to be with friends and to go out and eat. I asked her if she

could maybe skip going out one of these times at least once maybe every other weekend to be

able to focus on yourself? I told her that it is good to go out with friends and socialize but it

might be worth it to stay at home with a little extra time once every other week to focus on your

spirituality and your inner self. She said she might consider it and try it out to see if it works. I

feel like it is good to socialize but we also need to take care of ourselves as well. I feel like if she

could do that, it would give her time to work on herself and feel better about her spirituality.

The sixth question I asked is if she could maybe talk her children into trying yoga with

her, and asked if they would want to do it with her? I asked this question because I feel like if her

family could want to do yoga with her when she does it, it could benefit her and her family in

various ways. They could do the yoga with her which would provide a lot of benefits for her

children and her. It would get them involved in a good form of exercise they could do because

there is children’s yoga that has very simple poses that children can do, and the adults can do it

with them. That way she can get her yoga in while she is with her children and it keeps the
Unit 9 Assignment 5

children busy as well. She said she doesn’t know, her children are usually all over the place

when it comes to focusing, especially when it comes to getting them to do their homework. I

replied saying that doing yoga beforehand might get them to focus a little better when they do

their homework after. She said she might give it a try which is good.

The seventh question I asked was how she felt when she use to do yoga and describe it in

just a few words as far as the feeling she use to get from when she did it more regularly. She said

that she use to feel great when she did it. That she felt good and the stress left her body during

the session. I asked her that because I feel like reminiscing about when she use to be able to do it

more often would maybe get her to want to start doing it again. Just like when people reminisce

about previous events or memories, it sometimes might encourage them to do it again if they still

can or if the haven’t seen a family member in a long time, reminiscing might make them want to

go see that family member.

The eight question I asked was if yoga took too much time or involved too much would

meditation be a good substitution for the yoga, she might even be able to take time out of work

for a few minutes or could meditate during a break at work. She said she has never done full

meditation but could give it a try. I asked this question because the meditation could be a good

substitution for the yoga if she doesn’t have the time but wants to connect spirituality with her

inner self. Not only that but meditation is very comparable to yoga, just meditation you focus on

something different or just focus on inner thoughts while yoga is the same but people do

different movements with their body so I feel like meditation might be a quicker alternative to

work on oneself (Brooks, n.d.).

The ninth question I asked as we got towards the end was if she felt better when she was

doing yoga more often? Examples I used we’re if she had better mood, better mobility, better
Unit 9 Assignment 6

sleep at night and she said she did. She said that she felt her sleep was a little more peaceful

when she was doing yoga vs now. Yoga is good for many benefits not just the ones mentioned

earlier but yoga also improves stress levels, reduces anxiety and promotes better sleep at night

especially if you do it not to long before people go to bed at night (Harvard.edu 2009). So, yoga

does provide an incredible amount of benefits which is also part of the reason I started doing it

and recommend it to anyone.

Lastly I asked her if she would at least try to make time for it because of the benefits it

provides to her and she said she would try to work harder at trying to make time for it at least a

couple of times a week and try to add some meditation as well. I am glad she is going to try to fit

in this time for herself to help achieve better overall spiritual wellness and restore the mind body

spirit connection in herself.

In the end I feel like this spiritual inventory is pretty good, I might have changed out

three of these questions with ones that were maybe a little better than the questions I had. The

point of my spiritual inventory was to find if someone had a spiritual activity they already had

been practicing or been practicing in the past and develop on that and see if the activity had

helped them to help their spiritual development. In this case she had been practicing one already

but due to things in life and had stopped practicing it and was to try to get them to start doing it

again to better themselves by bringing back memories of it along with other reminders.
