General Topic: TRAVEL
Getting to the plane and Flying abroad
Professor: _________ 2020

Description.

This course students’ guide has been designed to help students develop new language
and successfully complete different activities related to “Getting on the plane and
Flying abroad” from and to an English-speaking country. The activities are set in
sequence to be completed in the next week. They can be accessed from Blackboard and
Catalyst.

Please, read and make sure you comprehend both the information and instructions
carefully before starting each activity. Contact me any time in case any question may

Learning Outcome: Develop cultural vocabulary as well as communicative skills and


strategies necessary to adequately manage situations related to TRAVELING, Getting
on the plane and Flying abroad in a global context, through listening and writing
exercises, videos, online practice and explanations applying grammatical structures and
vocabulary in oral and written texts to effectively participate in conversations and writing
activities.

Activity 1.
Project first feedback
Students will orally tell the events and songs for the first part of the project.
ACTIVITY 2: Vocab Follow up
VOCABULARY RELATED TO NATURAL DISASTERS

Aim: To make a vocabulary follow up on natural disasters.

Instructions:
Match each of the words in Column A with a definition from Column B

ACTIVITIES 3: Grammar Pills and Practice
QUICK PASSIVE VOICE REVIEW AND PRACTICE

Aim: To provide a space for students to verify their knowledge and understanding on
the topic and practice taking an online test. Break out groups of three-

ACTIVITY 4: Witnessing Conversations related to flying abroad


LISTENING DEEPLY TO UNDERSTAND TRAVELLING SITUATIONS

Aim: To sharpen listening skills in topics related to getting to a plane and travelling
issues.

Time to do the activity: 20 minutes to work in small groups. After that time all
students gather together again to report.
Instructions:

Students work in group of 3 students selected at random by the platform.


1. Please take into account the mp3-file-Dialogue that has been assigned to you.
2. You have just witnessed the conversation between two people. Answer the
questions below:
A. Specifically, where does the conversation most probably take place?
B. What is the most probable relationship between the speakers?
C. What is the issue? I mean, what is essentially happening throughout the
conversation?
D. Regarding the main issue, do the speakers agree or disagree? Provide evidence.

Assessment: This activity is to be reported orally in class. It is a listening/speaking practice.


Teacher will give feedback.

ACTIVITY 5: Talking to people in travelling-related issues


BEING POLITE TO REQUEST, REACT OR MAKE CLAIM WHEN NECESSARY
Aim: To refrain to use bad manners (speaking politely) when requesting, reacting, or
making claims in issues related to getting on a plane and travelling issues.

Time to do the activity: 30 minutes to work in small groups. After that time all
students gather together again to present the dialogues.

Instruction 1: This is the expected product at the end of the class. Students work
in the same group of 3 students of the previous activity.

Instruction 2: General Instruction: You are unexpectedly involved in different situations


which urge you to act immediately. You have to solve situations that have arisen suddenly.
What would you do? Take into account the Challenge that has been assigned to you.
Prepare a conversation. Include at least 3 sentences in passive voice and one with due to or
because of.

Challenges create two conversations according to the dialogue assigned to your


group.
Challenge 1. You are at the customs office. The officer wants to check your passport You’ve
left it at home. Your plane leaves in two hours. 1-Talk to the officer and 2- Call home and talk
to your daughter.

Challenge 2. Someone saw a man pick up a passport left on the floor. He has delivered it at the
“lost and found desk”. This may be your passport. Go to the desk and find out. 1- Talk to the
lost and found secretary. 2 Talk to man who picked up the passport.

Challenge 3. A woman is picking up your suitcase while you are being checked at the security.
Her luggage has been kept aside because police officers have found a strange white powder in
it. 1-Talk to the officer and then, 2-talk to the woman.

Challenge 4. The plane has already landed. You have reached your destination. You arrive late
to pick up your luggage at the baggage claim. There aren’t any suitcases left on the conveyor
belt. You have talked to the officer but she said all the suitcases have been correctly delivered
and picked up. She said she was sorry, but she couldn’t help. 1- Call up her boss and get your
suitcases found and back to you at the earliest. 2. Call home and explain what happened.

ACTIVITY 6: General Topic: TRAVEL


CATALYST GETTING TO THE PLANE 2.

Aim: Work on the activities indicated in Catalyst Getting to the plane 2.

Dates: September 14 to 19th


Instructions:

1. Access Catalyst and work on Getting to the plane 2 activities. .

2. Please, read the information and instructions carefully before starting each
activity. Also, contact me any time in case you have questions

3. Take notes of the structures so you can ask questions during the class
session

Assessment: The activities of Catalyst Getting to the plane 2 are part of the grade
corresponding to Catalyst- General Topic TRAVEL. These activities will be graded on
a 0 – 5 scale based on the Catalyst report.
