Day 1: Cohesive Devices in Writing a Persuasive Essay (Synchronous Session)

Cohesion refers to the connection of ideas within and among sentences. This element is maintained
through language use or grammar and vocabulary. Thus, you need to be acquainted with various cohesive
devices you may utilize in your writing. Coherence in writing refers to the smooth transition among the
ideas presented in the sentences and paragraphs.

Concept Notes:
Cohesive devices are words or ideas that are used to connect ideas between the part of a text. It is
important to study cohesive devices because it affects reading comprehension when readers cannot
integrate information between sentences in a text.

A persuasive essay is a piece of academic writing where you use logic and reason to show that your point
of view is more legitimate than any other. You must expose clear arguments and support them using
convincing facts and logical reasons.

How to Write a Successful Persuasive Essay

1. Choose your topic and know your goal about the topic.

1
2. Identify and understand your audience.
3. Brainstorm and outline the main points of your topic.
4. In the introductory paragraph, write a strong opening to get the attention of the audience.
5. In the body paragraph, provide the audience with convincing evidence to support the claim or position
on the topic.
6. In the conclusion, provide a summary of your points and end it with a call-to-action statement.

For further explanation of the lesson, refer to your Integrated English for Effective Communication book

Okay, thank you very much, first of all my dear friends in the media, new friends, and friends from
some time ago, good afternoon and nice to see you all here this afternoon.
I am also being accompanied here by my colleagues in the Foreign Service here in the DFA, I wish
to acknowledge their presence, so I’ll start off first with some remarks regarding our work here in Foreign
Office and I think we’ll be able to have some time for some Q&A.
So let me start by saying that it is certainly a great pleasure to be here to officially meet the
members of the local and foreign media, for the first time, in my capacity as Acting Secretary of Foreign
Affairs.
First, I have mentioned that our paramount consideration in our foreign policy is the promotion and
protection of our national interest.
Second, we will endeavor to maintain friendly cooperative and mutually beneficial ties with all
nations.
Thirdly, we will pursue avenues to enhance our country’s capacities and we recognize that because
we are all now living in a globalized and inter-dependent world.
Finally, we need to build strong institutional partnerships.

Day 2: Writing a Narrative Report (Synchronous Session)

3
Concept Notes:
Narrative essays tell a vivid story, usually from one person’s viewpoint. A narrative essay uses all the
story elements—a beginning, middle, and ending, as well as plot, characters, setting, and climax,
bringing them together to complete the story. The focus of a narrative essay is the plot, which is told
with enough details to build to a climax.
Writing a narrative report should not be confused with writing narrative essays.

A narrative report can be referred to any detailed chronological factual piece of writing. The main
feature and main distinction of a narrative report are detailed depictions of an event in chronological
order. It is mostly used in the legal sphere.

Examples: application to a university, resolving the dispute, filing complaints

Structure of A Narrative Report

1. Statement of the thesis or the event – It states the context of the focal event of your report. Its time,
place, and actors.
2. Any background information related to this thesis. Sometimes, you can provide information
about events that preceded the key event in case they are relevant.
3. Chronological account of the event or a series of events – It should be as detailed as possible.
Don’t forget to mention the exact time and all the relevant numbers that can be applied. If there are
accounts from other witnesses or actors, you should quote them as well.
4. Summary of the event, its consequences, and implications - You should be as impersonal and
objective as possible.
Example:
Among the Philippines’ earliest achievements in science and technology were a number of
measures for the health of livestock and poultry. In 1906, for example, the work to eliminate rinderpest
began. This livestock disease became rampant following the importation of livestock into the
Philippines after the revolution and the war. Then, the Filipinos and Americans worked together to
develop, test, and eventually implement the use of a serum that would immunize animals. At around the
same time, our then-Bureau of Science also found itself devoting much of its work to monitoring public
health and the existing food supply. Undoubtedly, the hard work of generations of scientists and
stakeholders in the agricultural industry has redounded to great benefits for all.
As today, food security is not just about ensuring the stability of supply, but it is just as much
about public health and safety. For instance, toward maintaining the health of poultry and livestock, our
Department of Agriculture (DA) provides strategic vaccination and disease surveillance.
Events like these bring local and foreign stakeholders together. This event shows that government
is not alone in its effort. So, I encourage you to make the most of this event. Moreover, the sharing of
knowledge and best practices in this event will allow us to surpass the challenges. (President Benigno S.
Aquino III)

Day 4: Synchronous Session

Post-Test

Knowledge
Directions: Encircle the cohesive devices in the persuasive essay below.
Good evening, Ladies and Gentlemen,
I remember thinking that it would be hard to say goodbye ... and I was right - it is hard. Yet I
consider myself fortunate to have met such a special person ... a person that we care so much about ... that it
makes saying goodbye to him / her hard!
As we say goodbye, we remind ourselves that farewells are not forever, nor are they the end. They
are simply words to say that we will miss you dearly and that we will remember you fondly.
Although we may be separated by time and distance in the interim, nothing will diminish the
important role that you have and always will play in our lives.
And so, it is ... and always will be with you as we carry you always close to our hearts. May the road
rise up to meet you; may the wind be ever at your back. And until we meet again, may God hold you in the
hollow of his hand.
