COURSE TITLE: MANAGEMENT OF HEALTH SAFETY AND SECURITY IN EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS.

FACULITY: SCHOOL OF EDUCATION AND SOCIAL SCIENCE

DEPARTMENT: EDUCATIONAL ARTS

QTN: Discuss the disease and how they affect and learning in secondary school.
1 HIV/AIDS
Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), virus that cause Acquired Immunodeficiency S syndrome (AIDS), is
a slow acting retrovirus. This virus is transmitted through sexual intercourse with an infected person,
blood transfusion, needles contaminated with HIV, prenatally and through breastfeeding.

SYMPTOMS

Within a few weeks of HIV infection, flu like symptoms such as fever, fatigue and also sore throat can
occur. The disease is usually asymptomatic until it progresses to AIDS.

AIDS symptoms include fever, loss of weight, night sweats and fatigue. At the night the patient starts to
show the following signs;

 Diarrhea that lasts for more than a week.

 Rapid weight loss
 Brown red, purplish blotches on or under the skin or inside the mouth, nose or eyelids
 Memory loss and depression
 Recurring fever

TREATMENT

No cure exists for AIDS, but strict adherence to antiretroviral regimes (ARVS) can dramatically slow the
disease progress as well as prevent secondary infections and complications.

HOW HIV/AIDS AFFECT LEARNING AND TEACHING IN SCHOOL.

1. HIV infected students mainly miss schools due to illness and medicinal requirements thus
performing poorly in academics.
2. HIV can cause death of parents, causing financial strains making some learners drop out to find
jobs to sustain themselves financially.
3. Some students are stigmatized and fall into depression which leads to school drop out if no
action is taken.

2. MALARIA
Is a disease caused by plasmodium parasites transmitted by the bite of a female mosquito In human
beings, plasmodium multiplies in the living cells hence infecting red blood cells.

1. SYMPTOMS OF MALARIA
2. Extreme sweating
3. Fever
4. Abdominal pain or muscles
5. Fatigues, body chills, shivering
6. diarrhea, nausea or vomiting
7. Headache

TREATMENT

Malaria is treated with prescription drugs to kill the parasite. The type of drugs and length of treatment
will vary depending on the age, whether you are pregnant or not.

Most common antimalarial drugs include;

1. Chloroquine phosphate
2. Quinine sulphate
3. Primaquine phosphate

Malaria can also be prevented by the use of mosquito nets, spraying breeding areas i.e stagnant water
and others.

EFFECTS OF MALARIA ON LEARNING AND TEACGHING IN SCHOOLS.

1. Students lose physical energy to participate in curriculum activities

2. It affects school performance due to absenteeism and lose of students physical energy
3. Incase a teacher is affected the syllabus is not covered within the estimated time
4. If one gets a malaria at an early stage of life, it can affect the cognitive development leading to
low IQ

4. CORONAVIRUS
Covid 19 is a disease caused by coronavirus that originated in china in 2019. The virus is known as
the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (CSARS-COV-2).

IN march 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the covid 19 outbreak a pandemic.

SYMPTOMS

Symptoms of coronavirus may appear 2 to 14 days after exposure, common symptoms are;

 Shortness of breath
 Chest pains
 Nausea and vomiting
 Body aches
 Sore throats
 Headache

PREVENTION

1. Clean your hands with soap and running water oftenly with alcohol-based sanitizers
2. Self-quarantine if sick
3. Clean and disinfect surfaces
4. Cover you mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing
5. Wear a mask
6. Cover your mouth and nose when coughing
7. Stop shaking hands and bugging people

TREATMENT

There is no effective or specific treatment for coronavirus disease, thus the cornerstone management of
covid 19 is supportive care, which includes treatment to relieve symptoms, fluid therapy, organ support
and prone positioning as needed medication or devices to support other affected vital organs.

HOW CORONAVIRUS AFFECTS LEARNING AND TEACHING IN SCHOOLS.

1. Death or lose of jobs by guardians making it difficult for learners to meet their educational
needs.
2. Disruption of the education calendar to prevent spread of the virus making it difficult to
complete the syllabus in time
3. Corrade repetition due to often breaks taken to prevent the spread of corona disease.

4.TUBERULOSIS
TB is an infectious bacterial disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, which most commonly
affects the lungs. It transmitted from person to person via droplets from the throat and lungs of people
with the active respiratory disease

SYMPTOMS AND TREATMENT

 Coughing sometimes with spectrum of blood chest pains, weight loss, weakness, fever and night
sweats.
 It can also cause persistently swollen lymph nudes, abdominal pains, joint pains e.t.c.
 It is trated with six-month course of antibiotics.

5.TYPHOID
Is a bacteria disease spread through contaminated food, water or close contact.

SYMPTOMS OF TYPHOID

Symptoms usually develop 1-3 weeks after exposure and mild or severe. They include;

1. Diarrhoea
2. Nausea
3. Fatigue
4. Abdominal pain and muscles
5. Loss of appetite

TREATMENT

Typhoid fever can be treated with antibiotics, however, resistance to common antimicrobials is
widespread. Healthy carriers should be excluded from handling food.

EFFECTS OF TYPHOID TO LEARNING AND TEACHING IN SCHOOLS

Disruption of the education calendar for close to two weeks incase of outbreak in school.

Learner-victims being discriminated by peers leading to low-self-esteem hence poor performance in

academics.

6.CHOLERA
A bacterial diseases causing severe diarrhea and dehydration, usually spread in H2O.Its an infection of
the small intestine caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholera. It is a highly fatal disease contracted through
contaminated food and water.

SYMPTOMS

 Dehydration
 Vomiting
 Abdominal pain
 Nausea

TREATMENT

Prompt restoration of lost fluids and salts

After rehydration therapy, antimicrobial agents are typically administered for 3-5 days.

EFFECTS OF CHOLERA ON TEACHING AND LEARNING IN SCHOOLS

1. Absenteeism and loss of physical energy of the learners leading to poor performance.
2. Death of teachers or learners due to dehydration if they are not treated immediately
3. Disruption of the education calendar incase of outbreak to prevent it from spreading and
sanitizing the school
4. Financial strains in learners when money is used to cater medical bills
