Introduction

HYSYS is a chemical process simulator used to mathematically

model chemical processes, from unit operations to full chemical
plants and refineries. HYSYS is able to perform many of the core
calculations of chemical engineering, including those concerned
with mass balance, energy balance, vapor-liquid equilibrium, heat
transfer, mass transfer, chemical kinetics, fractionation, and
pressure drop.[1] HYSYS is used extensively in industry and
academia for steady-state and dynamic simulation, process
design, performance modelling, and optimization.

History

HYSYS was first conceived and created by the Canadian company

Hyprotech, founded by researchers from the University of Calgary.
The HYSYS Version 1.1 Reference Volume was published in
1996.[6] In May 2002, AspenTech acquired Hyprotech, including
HYSYS.Following a 2004 ruling by the United States Federal Trade
Commission, AspenTech was forced to divest its Hyprotech
assets,[8] including HYSYS source code, ultimately selling these to
Honeywell. Honeywell was also able to hire a number of HYSYS
developers, ultimately mobilizing these resources to produce
UniSim. The divestment agreement specified that Aspentech
would retain rights to market and develop most Hyprotech products

(including HYSYS) royalty-free. As of late 2016, AspenTech
continues to produce HYSYS.

What is Aspen HYSYS?

HYSYS (HYSYS for short, a portmanteau from Hyprotech and

Systems) is the one of the top leading Chemical Process Simulator
in the market (or at least in the Chemical Engineering World)

HYSYS is used extensively in industry due to its steady-state and

dynamic simulation, process design, performance modelling, and
optimization.

HYSYS is a software that will allow the user to build a process

model and then simulate it using complex calculations (models,
equations, math calculations, regressions, etc)

3
There are many perks in AP, from designing new processes to
improving existing ones. That is so, that even AP ensures so in its
website:

(it will) Maximize safety, throughput and profits by optimizing the

entire site in one environment using industry-validated simulation
accuracy and time-saving workflows.

Lets get more technical:

Given a process design and an appropriate selection of

thermodynamic models, HYSYS uses mathematical models to
predict the performance of the process.

4
Engineers will typically simulate this using the software in order to
optimize the design and improve existing ones.

This accurate modeling of thermodynamic properties is particularly

important in the separation of non-ideal mixtures.

One of the best advantages is that HYSYS has already an existing

data base of of species and their pure/binary regressed
parameters.

It can also handle very complex processes, such as:

 Dedicated Unit Operations for the Refinery Industry

(Crackers, Coker, Reformer, FCC Unit, etc.)
 Multiple-column separation systems
 Chemical reactors
 Simulation of Petroleum Crude Oils (based on their
properties)
 Complex Recycle – Bypass Stream in Processes
