RHC PURLINS ANALYSIS & DESIGN CALCULATION

(SAGROD AT MIDSPAN)

INPUT DATA:
1. Design the lightest LC-shape Purlin, use AISC-ASD and A36 Steel.
Fy = 400 Mpa
θ= 50 degrees Section = LC 220 x 75 x 25 x 3.0
S= 1.0778 m Load Combination = 1.0(DL+SDL)+1.0LL
L= 4 m
SDL = 0.38 kPa RESULT:
LL = 0.6 kPa Section type = Non-compact Section 147.06%
WL = 3.5 kPa Interaction = 0.19 Passed! 18.94%
Es = 200,000.00 Mpa Total Deflection = 1.45 Passed! 10.84%
Sagrod, Ø = 10.00 mm

SOLUTION:
2. For Normal & Tangential Loadings.
For the Normal Axis:
Wn = (WL + Wg cosθ) * S
Wn = 0.679 kN/m Load Cases Factored loads Unit
For the Tangential Axis: DL 0.085 kPa
Wt = Wg sinθ * S SDL 0.380 kPa
Wt = 0.809 kN/m LL 0.600 kPa
WL 0.000 kPa

3. Computation of Moment, Mx, My.

Mx = 0.125(w)(L)^2
Mx = 1.618 kN-m
For My (Considering th tangetial axis with sag rod at mispan) as per ASEP Steel Handbook Table (9-28):
My (+) = 0.07(w)(L/2)^2
My (+) = 0.227 kN-m
My (-) = 0.125(w)(L/2)^2
My (-) = 0.405 kN-m
My = 0.405 kN-m

4. Check section if compact or non-compact.

For compact section = 0.66Fy, for Non-compact section = 0.60Fy
bf/2tf ≤ 170/sqrt(Fy)
bf/2tf = 12.5
170/sqrt(Fy) = 8.5
Type = Non-compact Section

5. Computation of Sx & Sy.

Fbx = Fby = 240 Mpa
Sx = Mx/Fbx
Sx = 6,742.75 mm^3
Sy = My/Fby
Sx = 1,685.69 mm^3
6. Design of Purlins
Sx = 77,300.00 mm^3 bf = 75.00 mm
Sy = 16,500.00 mm^3 tf = 3.00 mm
W= 9.30 kg/m
Ix = 8.50E+06 mm^4
Total Wn = Wn + W (9.81/1000)(cosθ)
Total Wn = 0.733 kN/m
Total Wt = Wt + W (9.81/1000)(sinθ)
Total Wt = 0.874 kN/m

Mx = 0.125(w)(L)^2
Mx = 1.467 kN-m
My = 0.125(w)(L/2)^2
My = 0.437 kN-m

Fbx = Mx/Sx
Fbx = 18.974 Mpa
Fby = My/Sy
Fby = 26.484 MPa

7. Checking the interaction.

[(Fbx + Fby)/ΦFy] = 0.189409 Passed!
Compact, Φ= 0.66
Non-compact, Φ = 0.6
8. Check Resultant Deflection.
δ allow. = L/300
δ allow. = 13.3333333 mm

δ = sqrt[ (δn)^2+(δt)^2]
δn = (5*Wn*L^4) / (384*E*Ix)
δn = 1.438 mm
δt = (5*Wt*L*S)/(8*As*Es)
δt = 0.150 mm
δ= 1.446 mm Passed!
