Organisation of student working files:
It is important for efficiency or organisation in Year 13 that students organise and file their
work using a clear system. Work should be filed and accessible for evidence of work
completed.
Some of your work will be kept secure on file at school for moderation purposes.
External assessment:
Respond critically to written texts studied Achievement Standard
3.2
Your class will work for about 6 weeks studying written text(s) and practising written
responses both in class and in practice examinations to prepare you for the end of year
NZQA examination.
Your class will work for about 6 weeks studying a Shakespearean play and practising written
responses both in class and in practice examinations to prepare you for the end of year
NZQA examination.
Your class will work for about 6 weeks studying a film and practising written responses both
in class and in practice examinations to prepare you for the end of year NZQA
examination.
Internal assessment:
Produce an extended piece of writing in a selected style Achievement Standard 3.1
Your class will work throughout the year, learning how to write written responses to
thought provoking topics. Class work will prepare you for the internal assessment
component.
Complete independent research on a language or literature topic and present your
conclusions in writing Achievement
Standard 3.7
You will research an aspect of language or the author, the topic or the background for the
written text(s) that you study this year. These written responses should be thoroughly
referenced and should provide original and perceptive judgements and insights throughout.
This achievement standard prepares you for your Seminar work, where you will orally and
visually present your findings to the class.
You will prepare a presentation sharing your findings from your research topic. This
achievement standard is like those done at Levels One and Two, but much more thought will
need to be given as to the content that you present as this has a much heavier weighting in
Level Three.
Each entry will contain at least 3 pieces of original creative writing written this year, 2011.
This may include work done as part of class writing. All writing must have been
authenticated by the class English teacher.
The Festival of the Spoken Word:
This popular event is held every year. It is the culmination of the learning of formal
speaking skills that are part of the English curriculum.
Students who have strengths in this area are invited to compete for the Senior Speech Awards.
The Carville Cup for Public Speaking is awarded to the winner of the Senior Speech
Competition.
Re-assessment opportunities:
In some cases, it is possible for you to have one more chance to reach the standard if you
have not managed it the first time and you can show that you have made an extra effort to
learn the work.
Classwork:
Students are required to attend class. Absence notes must be signed by a parent or
caregiver and given to the classroom teacher when students return to class. See the school-
wide policy for attendance requirements.
Ranking for subject prizes will be based on a student’s achievement in all available
assessments (including optional ones such as seminar and folio) and his or her contribution to
the course.
External Achievement Standards will be assessed by external examination at the end of the
year.
Students’ work will be assessed to set criteria of attainment. All work will be placed in one of
4 categories:
Not achieved
Achieved
Merit
Excellence
The grade for final qualifications purposes will be awarded on the basis of the student’s
better result.
Appeals / Complaints:
If you think you have not been treated fairly in an assessment task you have 5 school days
from the time you received your grade to make an appeal. You should clearly outline in
writing the reasons for your appeal to your classroom teacher.
If you want to have the results of an assessed piece of work re-appraised you should see your
classroom teacher first. If this does not resolve the situation, you may then approach the
HOD, Mrs McDonald.
