MINI-LABORATORY ACTIVITY
Do what is asked in the task below. Show your complete solution. Encode your answer on the
space/box provided.

For the equilibrium: 2 BrCl(g) ⇌ Br2(g) + Cl2(g)

At 205 °C, the equilibrium constant (Kc) is 0.143. If 1.43 moles of each Br 2(g) and Cl2(g) are placed in a container
which has a volume of 11.0 liters and allowed to reach equilibrium at 205 °C, what would be the concentrations
of BrCl(g), Br2(g) and Cl2(g) at equilibrium?

Reaction: 2 BrCl(g) Br2(g) Cl2(g)

Initial amounts 0 0.13 M 0.13 M
Change in amount +2x -x -x
Equilibrium amount +2x 0.13 -x 0.13 -x
+2(0.074) 0.13 – (0.074) 0.13 – (0.074)
0.148 0.056 0.056

Show your complete solution in solving for equilibrium concentrations of BrCl(g), Br2(g) and Cl2(g).

Answer: [ Br C l 2 ]=0.148 M
[ Br2 ]=0.056 M
[ C l2 ]=0.056 M
