With the birth of the internet, the world is blooming with a huge amount of
information which is heavily affecting our way of communication and behavior.
As part of the information explosion, social media now expand its way to people
not only through television and paper but also from an online platform like
Facebook, Weibo, Instagram, Twitter with billions of users worldwide. Though we
can get information easily nowadays but it’s not always reliable, not to mention
inappropriate and harmful contents which are affecting the world’s young
generation socialization. With the study of Dr. Emad Farouk Saleh and Dr. Anwar
El-Rawas about “The impact of New Media on child socialization” which
implement to the topic, we can advance further into the problem we having now.

First, we need to know what is social media and how it works. Social media
consist of websites and applications which focus on communication, community-
based input, interaction, content-sharing, and collaboration. Anyone can access
social media by creating a profile or an account, it's an identity for people to use
online, with that profile we can share out thought, discuss about many topics, and
even for business, marketing, promote products. Wonderful as it is, but nothing is
perfect, social media still have many problems that need to be solved, we must
gather more data to know how social media are impacting the world and on people.

Participation in various forms of social media is an ongoing research activity that

has shown that it benefits children and adolescents by enhancing communication,
social connections, and even skills. Technical skills. Social media sites like
Facebook and Twitter offer many daily opportunities to connect with friends,
classmates, and people with similar interests. In the past 5 years, the number of
adolescents and young people using such sites has increased significantly.
According to a recent poll, 22% of teens log onto their favorite social networking
site more than 10 times a day and more than half of teenagers log on to social
media more than once a day 75% of teenagers currently own cell phones and 25%
use them for social media, 54% use them for texting and 24% use them for instant
messaging. Social media sites allow teens to complete many of the tasks that
matter to them online: staying connected with friends and family, making new
friends, sharing photos, and exchanging ideas. Social media engagement can also
provide teens with deeper benefits, broadening their horizons about themselves, the
community, and the world. For example, enhance individual and collective
creativity through the development and sharing of artistic and musical endeavors,
expand one's online connection through common interests to include others from
more diverse backgrounds, Opportunities to join the community through money
mobilization to charity, and volunteer for local events, including politics and
charity events and also, fostering one's individual identity and unique social skills,
advanced learning opportunities.

We can not deny the convenience social media bring, we access many hot topics
around the world, connect with people everywhere in the world, etc. however,
children are tended to overuse social media that led to an addiction to the platform
or device. This addiction forms a new way of socialization on children and its
effect is not good at all. For example, teenagers nowadays focus more on social
media more than people surrounding them because on the internet they can speak
however they like and that can develop an ill manner. Furthermore, they will be
affected by inappropriate content and lead to harmful behavior and even they
might be scammed, kidnapped. A study of Child mind institute also shows that
children with excessive usage of social media results in the feeling of depression,
isolated with the outside world, unbalance in nutrition intake, and biological clock.
Overall, the negative impacts of social media on children are severe both on mental
health and the body. To understand better about the present situation, we continue
to the study of Dr. Emad Farouk Saleh and Dr. Anwar El-Rawas about “The
impact of New Media on child socialization”.

The study indicated that with the revolution of information which the internet
brings, children now are exposed to a variety of knowledge about different topics
and from many points of view. Aside from the negative side I mentioned, the
article shows a high percentage of children use the internet as a tool to entertain
and to get education, also about religious practice. For getting essential knowledge
early in their life, children now are more develop with multi-dimensional and
logical thinking. In addition, they can learn a new language more efficiently and
can keep up with the world's trends. However, the article doesn't mention the
negative side that social media bring aside from excessive usage. To name a few
threats on social media: scam and identity theft, harmful contents, kidnappers,
cyber bullying and more, these are the most dangerous thing that children have to
face when they use social media. That is the reason why social media access needs
to be restricted and limited from children. While research this topic, I understand
more about the problem we are facing, as a culture and language learner, this topic
expands my knowledge and to know more about the impact of social media not
only on the world but also on children nowadays.

As a language and culture learner, of course, I want to learn more about culture
from a variety of countries as well as their unique language not from the book but I
want to directly experience their culture. For now, I need to finish my university to
increase my soft skills and general knowledge of the field I study. This topic I
research now will help me know more about how the social media impact on
children around the world, see how children in different countries react to it and to
see if their culture changes these impacts, will it reduce the negative impacts or
worsen it? Since kids are now can access more knowledge about everything in the
world, they know more about language, culture, religions that are different from
them then would it change the thought about their own culture. That is one of the
questions I seek during the research I did for this topic, for doing more research
like this I will increase my knowledge, hence improve the quality of my plan.

On the whole, the impact of social media on a child’s socialization can be very
bad if we don’t control it consequently results in child depression, and if we can
filter out the threat, social media can be a good thing for child development not
only at socialization but also manner, knowledge, talent, etc. Finally, research this
topic makes me understand more about people and their culture, thus I can further
improve my plan of self-development, get to know more about every culture, and
equip myself with the essential skills for my future career.
