Summary of Lecture 1

Research
Research is to explore the reality is also known as travel from unknown to known.

It is also process of finding solution of a problem.

Qualitative research
Qualitative research could be a scientific method of observation to assemble non numerical
information.

This type of research refers to meanings, concepts, definitions, characteristics of thing.

Example Marketing research conduct to collect data regarding consumer taste.

Characteristics of Qualitative research


Aims to study real words

Give depth knowledge of the phenomenon

Behavior of the subject is not regular and predictable

Qualitative research does not perform in controlled situation

Quantitative research
Quantitative research deals in range, logic, and an objective stance.

Example Research carried out to know the sales of various toothpaste brands in a quarter by
different companies of an industry.

Characteristics of Quantitative research


Quantitative research follows scientific method in their study

Subjective behavior is considered to be regular and predictable

Objective of quantitative research is to predict and explain social phenomenon.

Advantage of quantitative research


It saves our time
Result obtained from this method is reliable

Result can be generalized

Disadvantage of Quantitative research


It does not provide deep understanding of the phenomenon or content

There is risk always in generalization of result on larger population

To do this research, researcher should have knowledge of statistics

Advantage of Qualitative research


Suitable for the study of human behavior

Provide deep and detailed information

Like Quantitative research it does not follow rigid research design

Disadvantage of Qualitative research


Research result cannot be measured

Data collection based on the experience of researcher

Time consuming process

How to write good qualitative research question


The key qualities of a decent qualitative research question are:

 Having the ability to find issues and opportunities from respondents


 Open-ended in nature
 Simple to know and digest with no want for clarification

What does one like most concerning your favorite restaurant or low shop?

Could you describe the most necessary factors in your life?

Good qualitative purpose statement


A statement that provide the major objective of study

Definition
Problem
When there is a difference between desires and actual that is called problem.

e.g. In Applied research , problem in life.

 Theoretical Gaps
The gap in the knowledge

Examples:

 Coaching programs aren't as effective as anticipated.

Symptoms versus problem:


The rule is that we question about 5 times and when question is answered then we reach the
actual problem.

 We can’t say the 1 problem is a symptom.


 When answer of way is done then we know the problem.

Research questions and research objectives are derived from the problem statement.

After find out the problem then we take difference between research question and research
objective.

Basically we transfer our problem to the topic.

Design thinking
To find the solution of complex thinking of the people, understand the need of the customers or
what he need this approach is called design thinking. Design thinking is an imaginary process.

Design thinking is such a process which uses a designer to solve complex problem.

Design thinking basically identifies the need whatever the need; every need is all Desire and
emotions

Five Step of design thinking process


1. Empathize
Understand the problem
2. Define
Analyze interpret and plan
3. Ideate
Imagine research ponder
4. Prototype
Apply creativity to create
5. Test
Review and revise

Divergent thinking
Divergent thinking could be a thought method used to generate creative concepts by
exploring a lot of attainable answer
Convergent thinking
It generally means the ability to give the correct answer to standard question that do not
require significance creativity

Phases of design thinking


 Inspiration
Inspiration means what is the problem that we have to work on
 Ideation
In ideation process we develop new ideas to solve the problem
 Brainstorming
Brainstorming is a method design teams use to generate ideas to solve clearly
defined design problems.
 Implementation
In this process we implement the ideas that we have generated

Observation
In Observation there are two things when you take interview you observe the
body language what he minds and how is the behavior of him
