Time really flies fast. For the past months we have been struggling with the changes
brought by the COVID 19 pandemic. Until last August, class had finally and officially begun.
Now here we are, about to venture into our 6th week of this new normal type of learning. I know
most of us are not yet really used to it. Time and pressure had been our constant enemy in this
battle. Yet changes such as this are inevitable, what we must do is to adapt to it and adjust.
How do we relate the world’s current condition and its struggles with our religion
lessons? Is there a connection between the two? Definitely yes. On my own perspective,
Religion is not a subject. It is more of a lesson book where every page, every words and topics
are instruments that helps us to better understand life’s challenges and difficulties. That is why in
our first topic, we are introduce what is morality and the different views, principles and
understandings related to it.
Morality in general refers to our own distinction of what is right or wrong, good
or evil. And eventually, we learned the three cores related to it- moral, amoral, and immoral.
Moral relating to correct judgement of right or wrong, amoral, one who’s not concern with any
moral standard and immoral, one who does not act with accepted principles. I believe these
lessons are very timely especially to our present situation. It clearly depicts the behaviors of
people on how they face life’s difficulties. Now behind this concept is a much deeper essence
that controls an individual’s moral responses-and that is our conscience. It is this special ability
that helps us to perceive whether what we are doing is moral or not. Our conscience governs our
inner soul. It is the soft voice in our hearts and minds that dictates what we feel, how we talk and
how we act. Without it, surely our moral beings would be tempted. Indeed, it is our conscience
that controls us from accepting temptations that would trigger our sinful nature.
On top of that, we have encountered different stories of saints and valued
individuals who had dedicated their life to Jesus by serving Him and His children. We have read
of their wonderful deeds, of their piety, and selflessness. We are amazed by their faith and
devotion, a life live in a moral and conscientious ways. How I wish we could also have that kind
of character? These are all reflections that we should apply to our lives right now.
There are people out there, in need of a contrite heart, a hand willing to help and person
selfless enough to give. We are not just created social beings. We are also moral creations. God
had given us the power to perceive to rationalize and to choose. More than ever, let good deeds
and thoughts reign in us. Let go of our selfish and proud nature, and let God’s conscience
dictates.
My dear brothers and sisters, the choice is ours today! I encourage you to do good.
